SUPPLEMENTAL

SUBJECT: CLIMATE SMART SAN JOSE: CARBON NEUTRAL SAN JOSE BY 2030

ACCELERATION STRATEGY

REASON FOR SUPPLEMENTAL

Based on input received at the June 6, 2022, Transportation and Environment (T&E) Committee meeting, this supplemental memorandum recommends updating the vision statement in the Carbon Neutrality by 2030 Pathway to “San José will become a better, stronger and more resilient community by accelerating climate action and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030.”

BACKGROUND

On June 6, 2022, staff presented the Climate Smart San Jose: Carbon Neutral San Jose by 2030 Acceleration Strategy item to the T&E Committee. The Carbon Neutrality by 2030 Pathway (Attachment A to the memorandum) included the following vision statement: “San José will become a better, stronger and more resilient community by accelerating climate action and moving to carbon neutrality by 2030.” The suggested edit replaces the words “moving to” with “achieving”, so that the vision statement would read, “San José will become a better, stronger and more resilient community by accelerating climate action and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030”.

The T&E Committee approved referral of the Carbon Neutrality by 2030 Pathway to the City Council along with a requested update to the vision statement.

ANALYSIS

Staff recommends accepting the revised vision statement, which accurately projects and aligns with the City’s goals in its November 9, 2022 Resolution Setting a Goal for Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2030 and Reaffirming the City Council’s Commitment in the City of San Jose Climate Emergency Resolution.
