After being a retailer downtown since 1975, I think police foot patrol is critical for our currently struggling downtown. It is one of the few meaningful things we can do together quickly to improve the trajectory of our disrespected community immediately. Suburban residents of San Jose and throughout Santa Clara County still believe we are a degraded urban center—they do not come downtown! The best days I remember during my time downtown were when we had an active foot patrol. The officers had a sixth sense, knew business owners, and often solved problems before they developed. They give owners, workers, and customers a feeling of care and safety that is currently missing.
Please fund a robust foot patrol!
Sincerely,
Steve Borkenhagen
