Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.

When I retired from the San Jose Mercury News in 2013, one of the primary reasons was to work with non-profit arts and community groups in San Jose. (As arts and entertainment editor of the paper, it would have been a conflict of interest to work with them while still at the paper.) Since my retirement, I have worked with a number of arts groups and joining the Arts Commission would be a next step in what I see as my being an advocate for a robust arts community in the city. Clearly, with the demise of such key arts organizations as the San Jose Rep and the Ballet San Jose, we now face a true challenge in both maintaining the rich, vibrant culture our city has and building on that foundation as we move forward. I would use my experience and energy to work towards that goal. Specifically, I would hope to solve the venue issues faced by many smaller companies, help to increase the collaboration between San Jose's diverse arts groups and raise public awareness -- particularly among our younger citizens -- of the arts and entertainment San Jose has to offer.

Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
During my nearly 30 years at the Mercury News, I held a number of editing and writing positions including city editor, state editor and news editor which give me a knowledge of how the city of San Jose functions.

But I spent the final 14 years of my Mercury News career as arts and entertainment editor for the paper and as an arts and entertainment writer. In those roles, I was able to build a broad knowledge of the city's culture, from street festivals and ethnic dance companies to Symphony Silicon Valley and Opera San Jose. As a reporter, I wrote extensively about the Rep, the San Jose Stage and City Lights and about visual arts, notably exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Art and the San Jose institute of Contemporary Art. In addition, I am a 2012 graduate of the San Jose Leadership program that is part of the San Jose Chamber of Commerce and a member of the San Jose Rotary Club, as of 2015.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I have been a member of the San Jose Arts Commission since February 2017 and feel I have contributed to the work of the commission during that time. Over the past four years, I have served on the boards of the City Lights Theater Company, the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo Foundation and the San Jose Downtown Association Foundation. All have very different issues facing them and I feel I have been able to contribute to the board's work on all three. At City Lights, I was voted president of the board in 2015-17. At Happy Hollow, I served as chair of the board's Government Relations Committee as well as working extensively on its signature fundraising event, Hoot and Howl.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

As noted, I have a broad background in the arts and actively advocate for arts groups in a number of different areas. In addition to those already mentioned, I have occasionally worked (on a volunteer basis) with such other organizations as San Jose Jazz, Cinequest and Children's Musical Theater San Jose. I have assumed leadership roles both at the Mercury News and in my work with non-profit boards and would hope to bring some of those skills to the Commission.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The primary goal of the Commission is to review proposals (both financial and non-financial) brought to the city by arts groups and advise the City Council on those proposals. It also serves as an advocate for the arts in San Jose.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address. 1) The need for venues for smaller arts groups who cannot reasonably use such facilities as the Hammer Center, the Montgomery Theatre and the California. 2) Finding a more consistent (and larger) source of funding for the arts than the current percentage of the TOT. This is particularly important in the wake of the pandemic. 3) Helping to raise the profile of those arts organizations that already exist and finding way to encourage the formation of new groups as way as ensuring the cultural future of the city.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe recent San José arts activities you have participated in during the last twelve months (up to five activities) and what drew you to attend? 1) The San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. I am a long-time member of San Jose Jazz and the summer festival is one event I never miss. 2) Theater including attendance at City Lights, San Jose Stage, Children's Musical Theatre and Broadway San Jose. 3) The dance lessons in Plaza Cesar Chavez. Love it. 4) The annual San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art silent and live auctions. 5) Musical performances at various venues and online (pandemic).

Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe the ways in which you believe the arts bring value to the general community.

The cities I admire most as livable spaces for all their citizens -- Portland, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh among others -- have among their core values a public will to support and foster the arts as a way of bring cultural richness to their residents. I strongly believe that city residents want the chance to experience music, visual arts, theater and dance as part of their lives and that is particularly true of a city as diverse as San Jose.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
Should the City of San José have an active role in arts and cultural development? If so, in what ways and why?
The city's role as a financial supporter of the arts is limited, simply by virtue of all the other necessary functions the city must perform, from public safety and street maintenance to parks and recreation.

However, the city should try to find innovative ways to provide as much funding as possible for the arts whether that be directly from the city or through city-supported partnerships with the corporate and foundation sectors. We should bring the same level of entrepreneurship to the arts that the city strives to bring to economic development. Again, this does not mean merely financial support but promotion and finding ways to facilitate the growth of the arts.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
How can you contribute to advising City Council on policy and programs related to cultural development in San José?
As a former journalist, I have spent most of my professional career asking questions and assembling information on a way range of often complex issues and then bringing a level of insight and clarity to those issues. My involvement in a broad range of arts areas -- as a board member, as a supporter and as someone who regularly partakes of the cultural opportunities the city offers -- has given me a certain knowledge of the current state of the San Jose arts scene. Both would, I think, be of value to the Commission's work.

As a lifetime supporter of the arts in this community it is still apparent that the arts need more help than ever before in the coming years. Our current crisis puts even more strain on every groups ability to survive. I especially would like to help with these issues of I can. I am interested in supporting individual artists as well as arts groups, I think we could do much more in that area than has been done so far. Most of the funding seems to go to groups and without the individual artists surviving and thriving I feel we are lacking as a culture.

Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
As you can see from my application I have worked as a volunteer in this field for the better part of my life and if chosen will look forward to continuing to be a contributing member of our local arts organizations.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

Serving on the Arts Council Silicon Valley/ Silicon Valley Creates at a time of great transformation was a rewarding and very satisfying experience. Helping to do the research, planning and making the decisions that would save and transform this organization for the coming decades was a wonderful volunteer opportunity.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

Having spent most of my life involved in the arts
professionally, 40 years in Graphic Design and
Residential Design, and my extensive volunteer background in the arts I think I hope I would bring enough history and knowledge to the commission. Plus I am a lifelong learner! Lynne Rosenthal
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? To preserve, create, fund, educate and promote the arts in our community, help disparate community and arts groups come together and support one another and create a City proud of its cultural institutions.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

Lack of funding Lack of major interest and funding from our very wealthy tech companies in the Bay Area Getting Arts Education back into our schools as a priority for a successful and enriched life as in STEAM Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe recent San José arts activities you have participated in during the last twelve months (up to five activities) and what drew you to attend? As a long term care giver the last few years and especially this last year as my husband declined I have not been able to participate recently. But in the past I regularly go to Bay Area museums, art galleries, plays, opera, arts fund raisers such as the SJMA September Gala the last two years, continuing personal
arts education etc. I just finished the Eric Fischl biography Bad Boy... being interested in him after seeing his show at
SJMA and meeting him there.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe the ways in which you believe the arts bring value to the general community.

As someone who has had a life supporting the arts in
this community through my extensive volunteer
career and my 40 years in Graphic and Interior Design,
an interest in seeing our cultural institutions
survive and thrive and local artists have a supportive and caring community to be there for them, I would like to be part of the ongoing process in San Jose.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
Should the City of San José have an active role in arts and cultural development? If so, in what ways and why?
Absolutely! Arts and Culture are an essential component of a community bringing awareness and education about cultures other than your own, joy, learning, beautification, a historical perspective sometimes and an overall sense of well being for all.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
How can you contribute to advising City Council on policy and programs related to cultural development in San José?
I have spent a lifetime supporting the arts in this community, I know a fair amount of what it takes to keep these organizations alive and active and am always interested in learning for myself especially about the arts in general and locally.

Lynne Rosenthal
(Optional) Please upload a resume.

Anything else you would like us to know?
We have certainly come a very long way since I became involved in our arts community in the 1970s but
we have a long way to go to make a diverse community the size of San Jose be interested and involve themselves
financially and personally in our cultural institutions.

BACKGROUND:

Homegrown in East San José, I moved into my grandparents’ home, where they lived since the 1970s, along with my mom and two siblings in 1995. I am a product of ARUSD through through middle school, and private-Jesuit schooling for High School and College. Growing up in these two worlds, being multiracial, and not always fitting in to one classification, I learned early how to navigate difference spaces and how to be a bridge-builder among different groups.

MY 'WHY':

I believe real change takes
both, an ability to activate diverse groups, and also, the ability to sustain creative solutions that benefit everyone. I would like to become a member of this Commission because it will allow increased representation from my home community and because it will give me a chance to learn how I might navigate local government spaces to better serve greater San Jose beyond my neighborhood.

OBJECTIVES:
(1) To Increase representation from my neighborhood while safeguarding diversity of thought and culture
(2) To support a strong governance structure, that would allow for active participation from all of San Jose’s constituents
(3) To help lead important processes that will shape our election cycles, charter amendments, and to improve quality, equity of voice, transparency, and accountability within local government
Jonathan Borca

With over a decade of nonprofit experience, I consider myself a long-time public servant and advocate.

In
my current role, as Deputy Director, I've received two promotions since I started in March of 2020, lead all efforts on the California Arts Council Administrators of Color Fellowship (CAC ACF), supported agency highs in sponsorship, talent acquisition, and have rolled out new procedures and policies.

More about
CAC ACF: A statewide diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) initiative. Serving on the Charter Review Commission would be a chance to maximize my local impact, and would also be an opportunity to learn from public servants who have shaped our City's past and who will help define our City's feature.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I am currently the a board member and fund development chair for Local Color (close to three years) and was previously an Executive Board Member for New Leaders Council Silicon Valley (two years). I also have relevant experiences. This includes working directly with the San Jose Downtown Foundation Board of Trustees as the Downtown Doors Director, learning nonprofit board mechanics and trainings as a Fellow for Latino Board Leadership Academy, and being a current cohort member for Latino Leadership Alliance whose mission is to empower Latino civic leadership by identifying, developing, and supporting emerging leaders (across sectors). These experiences, combined with my upbringing, will set me up to serve as a strong art commissioner that can collaborate with fellow commissioners, and a wide variety of constituents to support agreed upon initiatives.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social, Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

As Partnerships Manager for San Jose Downtown Association (SJDA), I leveraged my ability to drive valuable relationships and applied this function across a variety of businesses, organizations, and other constituents. With SJDA, I helped develop an onboarding for new businesses, setting agency highs in grand openings, and organized one of the three downtown committees. Within two years’ time I helped activate the previously dormant Historic District, growing the monthly business attendance to double digits, while supporting over 50 businesses with Grand Openings, Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies, and small- scale marketing. The ability to drive relationships and process is what I would tap into as an active Charter Review Commission member.

Jonathan Borca

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? My understanding is that the Charter Review Commission was established to examine the City’s governance structure for efficacy, accountability, and to ensure a representative government. The commission also serves as an advisory committee to the City Council, and can directly, or indirectly, support citywide efforts to improve accountability, representation, and inclusion within our beloved City.

Beyond that, an Art Commissioner role should be an opportunity for ambassadorship across across the creative sector, and an invitation for continuous improvement and accountability from our dear city.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address. (1) Having a more inclusive and streamed lined application process, as well as improved community engagement to solicit underrepresented candidates. I’ve directly supported several grassroots and agency based community engagement initiatives. I’d like to support these efforts if and when it is needed. (2)
Pairing with local businesses, organizations, and cultural institutions to have community engagement best practices embedded within governance structure and charter amendments.

I’ve held several partnership
roles, enabling a large reach on a variety of City-based constituents. I’d like to leverage relationship building and my network to serve the Charter Review Commission to my best ability. (3) Improved social
media presence and social media campaigns to activate a variety of platforms, increase Chater Review visibility, and to engage diverse age groups (such as millennials and Gen-Z).

I’ve supported
communications for several organizations and boards and could apply this practice as needed.

PRODUCER of A Little T.L.C. (Tools, Learning, and Care): A Full Day In-Person Event, Celebrating Literacy and the Arts. Location: Mexican Heritage Plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave., San José, CA 95116 | Date: 11/28/21 from 12:00 to 6:30pm | Event costs: $16,500 Description: On Sunday, November 28, La
Plaza hosted A Little T.L.C. (Tools, Learning, and Care), which included a literacy event (12 pm-3 pm), and concert (4-6:43 pm) with live painting with art vendors. This event was a part of a greater effort to uplift literacy and the arts for Black and Brown families. The first 100 families received a Literacy Care Package that included original literacy books by POC authors and illustrators, a Hieroglyphics T-Shirt and other school supplies. In addition, black and brown vendors, artisans, community partners, poets, musicians, and artists surrounded la plaza's garden. The concert portion of the program featured live- painters Elba Raquel and Francisco Ramirez, poets Walker, Quynh Mai Nguyen, Arlene Biala (Poet Laureate of Santa Clara County for 2016 and 2017), and musicians Noah and the Arketeks, Jackie Gage, and Philthy Dronez. Borca co-produced the event along with Akria’s Book Club founder, Dr. Grace Carroll, and was in collaboration with the School of Arts and Culture with funding from San Jose’s Abierto program.
2) PRODUCER of Colour Me GOLD: A music and art series intended to celebrate BIPOC creatives, small biz, and producers. Location: Mexican Heritage Plaza, 1700 Alum Rock Ave., San José, CA 95116 | Date: 3/5, from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Opening Ceremony) Description: On Saturday, March 5, a
new Music and Art Series, Colour Me GOLD, launched its opening evening at the Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza). The first event featured soul singer and San Jose native DeAndre Brackensick, emerging singer-songwriter Téa Noelle, former Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Arlene Biala and nationally acclaimed poet Yosimar Reyes. There was also a Black and Brown Vendor Market and live painting by artists Elba Raquel and Francisco Ramirez. Borca produced the event in collaboration with San Jose Jazz and the School of Arts and Culture with funding from San Jose’s Abierto program. 3) PRODUCER of
Colour Me GOLD: A music and art series intended to celebrate BIPOC creatives, small biz, and producers. Location: Mosaic Restaurant and Lounge, 211 S 1st St, San Jose, CA 95113 | Date: 5/7, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. (rotating at local small biz or historic locations) Description: On Saturday, May 7,
Mosaic Restaurant and Lounge was the first of three local businesses to round out the Colour Me GOLD series. This show featured songwriter Jackie Gage, artist Arely Cardenas, and digital art projectionist, SJ Storyboard. This show and the two to follow are in partnership with existing or currently dormant historic venues that have an outdoor patio, and indoor space (Mosaic Restaurant and Lounge, Five Points, Hotel De Anza - Hedley Club) and will be free (donation based) to the public. Every event will feature a musician, artist, and local small biz or bar that has stopped showcasing music since the pandemic or has had to change their model to sustain their business. The idea is to support our local ecosystem, small biz, and to feature incredible creatives, all the while creating and EXPERIENCE for patrons.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe the ways in which you believe the arts bring value to the general community.

I truly believe in the power of the arts to propagate a more equitable, just, and vibrant society. The creative sector (including music), can be accessible forms of expression across cultures, demographics, backgrounds and lived experiences. I think it's imperative that we lean into our DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) values now more than ever. In other words, art can be the vehicle to invest in, uplift, and celebrate the diversity of our creative sector and community.

Jonathan Borca
Question applies to
Arts Commission
Should the City of San José have an active role in arts and cultural development? If so, in what ways and why?
Absolutely. As a champion/ambassador of the creative sector, my story is very much an example of how my trajectory was transformed through performing arts and music. Growing up as a 'troubled youth' in East Side San José, my single-teenage mother and nana (grandmother) tried many things to help easy my temper and to channel my energy. It wasn't until my mother introduced me to writing (music and poems) that I had a framework and outlet to better understand my lived experiences. I didn't always have the model examples that I needed, but I never had a deficit in love. I now try to model the many identities that I carry and the hats that I wear all at once. I hope to help change the narrative of what it means to be human in a professional world, even if that means not fitting squarely into any one identify, and hope this inspires people to bring their full selves.

Our city should populate boards and commissions with diverse perspectives and continue to invest in the local creative sector. More equitable representation at decision making tables, like civic commissions, and boards will serve our city-wide, and diverse-makeup. I also know well need local government and elected officials to support equity-based initiatives for our creative community (like DEAI workforce development programs). Lastly, I believe that our city could really spur cultural development, such as investing in art and culture organizations to steward Cultural Districts, and to honor place-keeping or place-honoring.

Question applies to
Arts Commission
How can you contribute to advising City Council on policy and programs related to cultural development in San José?
I feel that I am in a unique position to add to the conversation on advisement because of my role as Deputy Director, and because of our plans to acquire property and to champion a cultural district in Mayfair (but also in Japantown and SoFA). I’d be happy to leverage my leadership and our resources to hold conversations as it relates to cultural development. Because of our city owned facility (6 acres), familiarity with city/county mandates, we’d also welcome hosting meetings or events that could be a resource as a physical (safe) space. I’d also stay committed to my network and community as a role of commissioner and
commit to community engagement. This would be a value add because I am in many networks, and model a strong ethics and commitment to community building as a performing artist, producer, curator, and advocate across disciplines. While I have select involvement with civic engagement, I am also pushing myself to be more involved in fundraising and supporting local elected officials. This is my way to leverage my nonprofit background with long-term and sustainable change.

Anything else you would like us to know?
For the better part of a decade, I wrote many chapters, grew my skillset, and gratuitously had space to fail, all supporting my growth as an intentional, creative and compassionate leader. I believe the most important chapters of my career are still to be written. From upholding stakeholder relationships to driving programmatic goals, along with a body of work supporting community initiatives, I often ruminate on moving the needle for the City that I was homegrown in. A proud Mexican and Filipino, East San Jose product, I hope to serve my City and see the Charter Review Commission as strong avenue to do so.

I've served on the Planning Commission for the past two years and would be grateful for the opportunity to continue serving. During my time on the commission I've taken our quasi-judicial role very seriously and make decisions primarily based on policy. I've also made of point of being transparent about who I meet with, visiting project sites before meetings, and taking all public feedback into account before making a decision. I aim to continue doing all of those things if reappointed.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I served on the Housing and Community Development Commission (HCDC) from August 2018 to July 2020. In my time on HCDC I learned a lot about how internal city processes work, and was particularly brought me up to speed on developer obligations like affordable housing, parks, and parking minimums.

HCDC also gave me experience hearing different, often conflicting, perspectives from different stakeholders, and weighing those wants and needs when making a decision.

Since July 2020 I've served
on the Planning Commission. I've had the opportunity to learn more about the planning process and the city's General Plan, and have had to make decisions within the parameters set by the General Plan and other cities policies. Serving on the Planning Commission has also given me an appreciation for how much care needs to go into decisions that can have legal ramifications for the city, and for how important it is to consider input from all stakeholders before making a decision.

Justin Lardinois
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

I’ve been involved with the District 1 Leadership Group (D1LG) for several years and was elected to serve on its board from January 2020 to January 2022. The D1LG has connected me to many of the people and organizations who have an interest and role in how our city functions, including neighborhood associations and other resident groups, developers, advocacy groups, and council staff.

If I serve on the
Charter Review Commission, I'll already come in with some idea of how various groups feel about city government, and I'll already have a rapport with many of the stakeholders that participate in the charter review process.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The purpose of the Planning Commission's role is to consider projects that have come through the city's planning process and make recommendations to the City Council as to whether a project should be approved based on whether it adheres to the General Plan and other relevant city policies. In some situations, the Planning Commission is the final authority in approving a project. We also on occasion provide recommendations on updates to city ordinances that relate to land use.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

1. Making land use decisions and recommendations that are consistent with the General Plan and further its goals of a cohesive, walkable city with a healthy jobs/housing ratio

2. Operate transparently and make
it clear to the public why we make the decisions that we do

3. Incorporate our own perspective in the
process as residents from all across San Jose

1) Listen and ask questions that push for deeper analysis of issues and patterns; 2) Lead with an open mind and offer my perspective to complex issues; 3) Work to foster a collaborative environment that is centered around equitable and sustainable practices.

Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
Moreover, I am interested in serving on the Planning Commission so I can offer my experience and input on the ongoing efforts to establish a more fair and equitable San Jose for all its diverse residents.

As a
public school administrator I have deep experience in aligning local, state, and federal priorities to meet the needs of diverse community members and state and federal accountability measures and regulations.

Every day I leverage local, state, and federal policy in a meaningful way so it positively impacts our local schools and community.

I feel I can bring the same amount of care and impact to the current and future work being done by the Planning Commission.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I have sat on the Charter Review Commission for the City of San Jose in 2021 and was a board member of the New Leaders Council of Silicon Valley.

I am very familiar with working collaboratively, following Roberts Rules of Orders, and ensuring the organization's vision is honored and carried out to the best of my ability.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

Some of the professional skills I would bring to the Planning Committee include being a skillful listener, collaborator, mediator, communicator, innovator, critical thinker, and champion of the greater vision.

I can
identify issues impacting key stakeholders (residents, families, businesses, labor, community members, etc.) and seek out resourceful ways to best approach and deal with every situation. In doing so, I put the individuals I work with and for at the center of my work and build policies and systems that support their success.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? Commissions are set up for everyday residents to review specific items, discuss important related matters, and provide independent recommendations to the San Jose City Council.

As part of their work,
they have an important role by being visible in the community and offering a range of ideas into the process.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address. 1) Affordable housing 2) Zoning 3) Transportation

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.

I appreciate the opportunity provided to me by the city council to serve on the planning commission and have enjoyed contributing to the betterment of our community. I am willing and able to continue with both the responsibility and time commitment going forward.

During my planning commission tenure, I missed
one meeting. In 2019,
I arrived ten minutes late due to heavy commute traffic from Redwood City and this same meeting was adjourned as I arrived due to no significant agenda items.

Coincidently, this is small
example on the impact of the jobs/housing imbalance which forces the majority of employed residents (pre-pandemic) to leave San Jose daily for employment and thus residents are less likely to participate in civic affairs.

During my time on the commission, I have consistently supported professional planning staff and our established city goals by voting for all projects which had the support of planning staff. This includes affordable housing, market rate housing, commercial, industrial, and conditional use permits.

Planning staff recommendations follow the General Plan and/or pertinent Specific Plan/Urban Village and the commission works to implement policies established by the city council.

On more than one occasion, I
have had the opportunity to provide historical context on several applications that have been under consideration for 10 to 20 years and the city council ultimately supported those same projects unanimously.

I have also supported professional planning staff by ensuring land use applications are processed without delay so the city council has more options to schedule city council hearing(s). In the past, prior planning commissions delayed agenda items unnecessarily which ultimately impacted the city council with limited calendar options or having to endure a really long council meeting to meet state deadlines.

I periodically express, as needed, the distinction between commission's narrow scope of responsibility and city council's vast latitude and flexibility.

I have shared that only the city council can
create new ordinances or implement creative out of the box solutions for contentious land use items.

I
have completed all AB1234/AB1661 trainings, filed all FPPC forms consistently, and attended American Planning Association conference virtually last year. I also follow guidance from city attorney regarding brown acts and as directed by the city attorney to not attend interest group events meant to persuade commissioners.

Prior to serving on the planning commission, I reviewed countless land use entitlements across the entire city, listened to hundreds of hours of testimony, and attended community meetings in every council district. I believe a good planning commission is a strong asset to any city, since proposed projects that implement a modern General Plan often have significant community opposition due to increased densities, heights, traffic, and reduced parking requirements. Having a planning commission which is knowledgeable and
implements the city's goals enables the city council to have a smoother process with public hearings.

From my first hand perspective, I have found citywide representation on the planning commission to be positive the same way it has been for the city council. The discussion from fellow commissioners has been thoughtful and respectful.

I also believe web meetings have allowed more
residents to participate during public hearings and has also enabled higher attendance from commissioners that has avoided cancelling meetings due to lack of quorum.

Pierluigi Oliverio
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
Born and raised in San Jose, as the son of immigrant parents who were both teachers. My Mother taught Italian at community centers and public schools while my Father taught adult immigrants to speak English at churches such as St John Vianney and Sacred Heart. Our family lived in an apartment for approximately ten years before my parents bought their first and only home. I mention this for background to share our family is of modest means and understands the immigrant experience which is an immense strength for San Jose.

Neither I, nor my family, have any financial interests in real estate besides our respective primary residences.

I served as member of General Plan 2040 Taskforce (four years) and General Plan 2040 Update Taskforce (approximately 1 year).

Currently, I am keenly interested how local
government through land use could further support elder care for seniors and make certain that government proceedings and the associated documentation are accessible for everyone, including the disabled community.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

Prior to the Planning Commission, I served on council committees, liaison to city commissions, and multi jurisdictional bodies for ten years. I have found overall it is better to listen than be verbose, humor can dispel tension, and congeniality and patience are good attributes.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social, Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

Understand Brown Act and Roberts Rules of Order. Planning Commission recommendations to City Council must comply with federal/state law, city ordinances, and follow General Plan, Specific Plans, and Urban Villages. Keep meetings on task and move PC agenda items to City Council.

Pierluigi Oliverio

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Planning Commission makes recommendations to the City Council. Planning commissioners review professional staff recommendations on applicant proposals, listen to applicant, listen to public testimony, reviews environmental impact reports, and clarifies commissioner/community concerns with planning staff and city attorney. In some cases, the Planning Commission is the final body to make a decision such as an appeal from Director's Hearing and Conditional Use Permit. I understand how findings must be made in certain circumstances with evidence to be compliant and avoid litigation.

The Planning Commission also
reviews the CIP budget and provides feedback.

From time to time, it may be important to provide context to community members during the meeting regarding the city's goals so the audience understands why an application was approved or denied.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

Jobs-Housing-Environment:

The Planning Commission does not control what applications come forward as those are initiated by private property owners and in limited cases government entities. The Planning Commission must act within federal/state law and city ordinances. Adherence to San Jose 2040 General Plan, Specific Plans, and Urban Villages should be respected.

The City of San Jose has had a
documented jobs housing imbalance since at least 1976 as proclaimed by then Mayor Janet Gray Hayes.

The 2040 General Plan has a goal of preserving industrial and commercial land so as to provide a tax base to pay for city services and provide reasonable commutes for San Jose residents. Deviation from General Plan goals should be deferred to the City Council. In addition, the City Council has adopted a plan for 25,000 units of housing, of all income levels, mostly in the center of our city.

These infill housing
units will include increased densities which are widely accepted as beneficial to the environment. As land becomes more scarce, encroachment on riparian corridors, hillsides, and the urban service boundary should be respected per city ordinance.

Anything else you would like us to know?
Thank you for taking the time to consider my application for planning commissioner. I would continue to look for ways to leverage my experience and knowledge to make recommendations to the City Council that produce positive outcomes throughout the City of San Jose. Significantly, during the ten years I served on the San Jose City council, I never missed a council meeting, and worked diligently to earn the reputation of being responsive and attentive to the needs of constituents.

I am available to meet with any
councilmember or with any group(s) a councilmember may suggest however as stated previously I believe commissioners should follow and implement land use applications based on currently established dictates of the city council.

Below is an email sent to me by retired City of San Jose planner Michelle Yesney who was also a recent a planning commissioner during my tenure. Email titled: "Thanks" "Pierluigi-Thank you
very much for the insights you provided at the hearing on Middlebrook Gardens. I think we all felt there was something troubling about denying a permit without a "real" planning-based reason, and you were able to bring that issue to the surface. Your experience on the Council was especially helpful, as you pointed out the differences in the decision-making roles of the two bodies. Michelle" And an email from
Alex Shoor of Catalyze SV Email titled: Thank you for your comments "Pierluigi, I’ve been meaning to
email you to thank you for your comments at the Planning Commission late last year - when the Charities Housing project on Blossom Hill was being voted on - asking staff to pursue higher densities on projects such as this one. I really appreciate what you said. I think it came through loud and clear and had a real impact.
- Alex"

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I am currently serving on the Planning Commission.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

I believe that my 31 years of local government Fire Department experience with the cities of Santa Cruz, Campbell, and Mountain View will allow me to effectively understand and evaluate development projects, the intent and requirements of the General Plan, and land use issues facing the City of San Jose.

From
1985-1987, I worked as the Fire Marshal for the City of Campbell.

In that role, I was responsible for
working with the Planning Department on review and approval of fire and building code requirements related to new construction and property developments.. With the City of Mountain View, I served two years as the Fire Marshal and two years as the Fire Chief.

In both these roles I was involved in project
review as well as providing input to the Planning Department regarding changes and updates to the city's General Plan as it related to fire safety.

I have extensive experience working with city Division Managers and Department heads in both Campbell and Mountain View on numerous development projects of various sizes and complexities.

I believe I have a good understanding of how city departments are impacted and work together on land development projects.

In my roles as Fire Chief, Battalion Chief, and
Fire Marshal, I worked together collaboratively with city staff, residents, labor groups, and other stakeholders on land use issues.

In my role as a Neighborhoods Commissioner, I have participated in many neighborhood association and district leadership group meetings.

This has given me a good sense
for the concerns of residents and the challenge of balancing competing priorities and concerns for new development projects.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Planning Commission is charged with ensuring that development projects follow the requirements, intent, and spirit of the General Plan. The Commission reviews and approves changes to the General Plan.

It reviews Environmental Impact reports for major projects.

It reviews and approves projects vetted
through the Planning Staff.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

1. Proposed changes to the City's General Plan. 2.

Development proposals that are vetted and approved
by the City's Planning staff. 3.

Environmental impact reports for larger projects.

It has been an honor to serve on the Planning Commission representing District 9.

If reappointed, I
commit to working collaboratively with my fellow Commissioners in all of our work.

I look forward to the
importance and challenge of ensuring that projects meet the intent of the General Plan.

I would do this by
considering each project on its merits with great respect for the work done by the Planning Staff.

I would
also consider the input and concerns of all stakeholders in the process:
the developer, neighborhood
residents, labor and advocacy groups, and residents of the city as a whole.

My entire life has been
dedicated to public service, and I consider this a capstone of that work.

If selected I promise to serve with
dedication, energy, open mindedness, in a spirit of kindness and collaboration.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.

I would like to become a member of this Commission to not only empower the youth within our community to give them a voice, but to also encourage them to embrace their cultural identities. As a girl who used to be afraid to speak up, I am aware that many people feel the same way and are afraid to voice their opinions and ideas. I hope to be able to help hold leadership conferences and public speaking events to create a comfortable environment within the youth, and also build unity to encourage and empower us all to use our voices. Additionally, as we all live within San Jose, a very diverse city, there are so many different backgrounds and cultures that our community has. Growing up in an American society, we sometimes tend to forget about our cultural identity and our ethnic roots. If chosen as a member, I plan to help hold events that recognize different cultures and ethnicities to bring awareness to them and also remind the youth of the importance of their cultural identities.

Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
As a Vietnamese-Chinese-American girl, I have grown up around all of these cultures and fluently speak Vietnamese. I have always been close with my Vietnamese and Chinese cultures, and feel as though it has brought be closer to my family as well as shaped my identity today. I find all of the different ethnic and cultural backgrounds we come from very fascinating, and hope to be able to create an impact to have these diverse backgrounds be more prominent in our community.

• Please state your current responsibilities in other organizations and groups, as well as the time commitment associated with those responsibilities (including family responsibilities).

My current responsibilities consist of school work, sports, school clubs, and work. I have found that I manage my time very well balancing all of my responsibilities. With school work, I tend to finish all of my work during the school day and will complete my homework early to avoid procrastination. I play volleyball, in which I would have practices and games around 4 days a week, 2 hours each day, from September-October. My work with my school clubs vary, and averages around 4 hours a week. I am scheduled for work on the weekends for 4 hours a day, however my hours are flexible and I can change them if necessary.

Please list your community involvement, including jobs and volunteer work. - Built stronger connections with my class and school community through planning and executing events at my school - Helped to plan multiple blood drives at my school through my work as an officer in Red Hearts Club - Raised awareness for Vietnamese culture among students at my school through VSU Club and fundraised to donate to Blue Dragon Children's Foundation - Volunteer every year at my local temple during Tet (Lunar New Year) - CSF student tutor at my school - Attended multiple Key Club and Interact community service events
Question applies to Youth Commission
In one paragraph, please explain your community interests.

In my community, I have found an interest in bringing awareness to the Vietnamese culture at my school.

Through my work in VSU club, I have coordinated events in my school such as the Mid-Autumn Youth Summit (MAYs) and our annual culture show, as well as events during school on Holidays such as Tet to bring awareness to my culture. I have found a passion for sharing my culture with those around me and hope that it brings us closer as a community. I have also found a huge role in prioritizing physical and mental health in my community. Through my service in Red Hearts Club, I have brought awareness to health through various infographic posts as well as organized events such as the blood drives to not only bring awareness to the importance of health among us especially as students, but to provide ways for students to also give back to the community and make an impact on lives through donating in the blood drive. I believe that the most important aspect of my community interests is not only finding ways to bring awareness and make an impact on it, but also provide ways for those within the community to be able to do the same.

Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel are some of the problems facing the youth of San Jose? A problem I feel the Youth of San Jose are facing is their struggle in finding their identity. I've previously mentioned aspects of cultural identity, but another part of identity that I believe is a struggle is in regards to aspirations and future goals. Many youths today face the confusion of what they want to do in the future; what the want to be, what college they want to go, where they want to live. All of these questions lead to many youths to fear growing up, and in result, miss out on important opportunities within their community. This leads me to another problem I believe the youth of San Jose are facing: mental health.

The stress of being a youth in society today can often be overwhelming. The expectations, competition among others, and the loneliness of growing up as well as the search for identity, can all lead to mental health problems, and I believe that this is especially seen today. There is a lot of pressure that comes with being a youth in a city, especially a city in the Silicon Valley where success is everywhere, and I hope to be able to make an impact on different ways the youth can address these problems together.

Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel the priorities of the Youth Commission should be? I feel that the priorities of the Youth Commission is not only to be the voice for our community, but to hear the voices. I believe it is our priority to address the problems we see in the community directly, and take action to make sure there are changes. Subsequently, even though our youth community may not speak up a times, it should be our priority of the Youth Commission to recognize silent problems at hand and address them as well. These problems can be addressed through weekly meetings and planning conferences, conventions, events, and posting on social media in order to bring awareness to the youth.

If applicable, have you ever attended a meeting of the Commission(s) to which you are applying?

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I have had experience serving on my school's class board for 3 years now, in which I was President of for 2 years. The beginning of my freshmen year on this board was definitely challenging, as the workload and quick pace was a difficulty for me to balance on top of school. However, I learned to adapt to these changes and believe I grew as a leader since my communication skills, time management, and collaboration skills have improved tremendously from my experiences. My weaknesses I had did not discourage me, but they instead motivated me to push through them and learn from them. I have also served on two club boards: Vietnamese Student Union Club (VSU) and Red Hearts Club. Being on both of these club boards, I have been able to include my team work with others while also grasping a better understanding of what it means to be a leader in the community. Serving on these boards, I have learned to prioritize and listen to the people in my community, and work with my board to create meaningful connections. Throughout my service as an officer, I realized that my weaknesses as a leader do not define who I am, but defines my potential for growth.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

From my experiences in student government, school clubs, extensive classes, work, and volunteer service, I believe I am qualified for the youth commission through the knowledge I gained from each of these. Not only did I learn to work collaboratively as a team in each of my experiences, but they have taught me how to manage my time effectively. In student government, I have learned to reach out not only to my fellow peers and students, but also teachers and adults as well to communicate and use my voice in my school community. I was also able to further extend this to my school clubs as I reached out to Stanford Blood Center for our blood drive, and Blue Dragon Children's Foundation to support this charity.

My experience on school clubs have also led to my growth in experience with fundraising and budgeting, as I helped to raise over $3000 for VSU Club by reaching out to companies and sponsors to coordinate fundraisers. From my extensive AP and college level classes, I have sufficient knowledge of the outside world and will be able to give my best effort if appointed for the youth commission. I have taken a business course at EVC and am currently in a Marketing class at my school, and will be able to apply my skills of fundraising and budgeting when necessary to the commission. From my work experience at Starbucks, I am able to work quickly and efficiently during fast-paced operations and give quality customer service. I will be able to apply these skills by ensuring quality work to the commission and to my community even under time limits. My experience in volunteering at my local temple has allowed me to prioritize and meet the needs of my community, in addition to bringing me closer to it. I believe that experience has benefited me as a leader, and I hope to bring this aspect to the youth commission.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? My understanding of the purpose of this Commission is to encourage greater involvement within the Youth in our community. This can range from student government involvement, activism, and for a larger voice for the youth to address societal problems today. With so many problems in the world today, we commonly see politicians and adults holding high positions speaking up on matters; however, rarely any youth speakers. I believe that it is important that the youth also speak up on issues that matter to them, and that it is crucial for us to realize that we do not need a high position or any kind of power to have a voice in our community.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

Three issues facing the City that I believe the Commission should address are mental health awareness, drug abuse, and funding for school and services. Mental health has become a silent crisis in the city, especially among students. With the stress from school combined with other personal factors, mental health problems have been taking the lives of many, and this is a problem I feel the commission must address to prevent. Drug abuse also goes hand in hand with mental health, as many begin to turn to unprescribed drugs as a solution. This solution is extremely harmful for our health, and will harm our society in the long run if not addressed and prevented. Lastly, I believe the youth commission should address the lack of funding in schools and other services. As I am a student from a Title 1 school, I have noticed a huge lack of funding at my school, in which my school lacks many resources that are provided by others. Not only does this put an unfair disadvantage to schools that lack these resources, but it also discourages the students within these schools. This ongoing problem must be addressed to ensure a fair and efficient education that is accessible to all students.

I want to become a member of the Youth Commission because I want to effectively represent the lives of youth in San Jose. As a District 3 Youth Advisory Council member, I worked alongside the past and current District 3 Youth Commissioners to bring attention to a myriad of topics, ranging from environmental preservation to implementing policies from other cities (The San Francisco C.A.R.E.N. Act).

Objectives that I would work towards as a board member are policies regarding the environment and civil/youth engagement. Furthermore, with my past experience in the District 3 Youth Advisory Council, I want to create policy proposals and memorandums that focus on marginalized youth specifically. Black, indigenous, youth of color and underrepresented communities make up the heart of San Jose and District

3. I believe that representation from our marginalized perspective—as a daughter of Vietnamese refugees living in a historically redlined neighborhood—would help change the policy agenda to focus on the historically underrepresented. I want to be the representation I wanted as a child. I want to advocate for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and represent our communities of color and change as a diligent, hard-working representative.

Deitra Hoang
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I joined the YAC in 6th grade and helped the past Commissioner Maren Bick-Maurischat spread awareness about the Youth Commission. Alongside former Commissioner Bick-Maurischat, we attended and advocated for youth at town halls, hosted monthly Youth Advisory Council meetings in the Roosevelt Community Center, and held a community movie night before the pandemic. In the past couple years with current Commissioner, Nicole Hoang, I worked alongside them to draft and write seven policy proposals with the purpose of bettering the environment, mental health, and racial and gender inequity. These policies were all recently approved on the Youth Commission’s February General Meeting agenda. One specific policy I can point to is the “PAC” policy memorandum. PAC is an acronym for “Public Access Computer,” and these computers are in all San Jose Public Libraries. On a specific team with another YAC member and the Commissioner, I wrote a policy memorandum for all PAC to have “call to action” buttons where the public can easily sign up and register to vote on these Public Access Computers to encourage diversity. I am an avid advocate for voter registration. Votes matter to change our communities and create a better city, and I want to pursue further civic policy ideas in the future because a lack of civic engagement impacts marginalized communities the most. Currently, Commissioner Hoang’s policy proposals are waiting to be signed by a fellow Commissioner before they are sent off to the District 3 Council Office. This year, I was elected as Vice-Chair of the District 3 Youth Advisory Council to lead D3 YAC initiatives and outreach. I worked with Commissioner Hoang to organize the short meeting that the D3 Youth Advisory Council had with the D3 Council District Office. There, we discussed and learned about the process of how an idea becomes a policy memorandum, and eventually an implemented policy.

I also helped in the creation of the annual policy survey in 2019, and now, the survey has merged with the San Jose Public Library’s mental health survey and is at 400 responses. With Commissioner Hoang, we are planning to host a policython to teach youth how to write policy memorandums to be more civically engaged. As this year’s vice-chair of the District 3 Youth Advisory Council, I headed a lot of outreach initiatives to get youth involved in the Youth Commission’s events and checked up on other members to make sure their policy writing tasks were completed. One such example was the promotion of the annual San Jose Youth Commission Budget Summit, and another is my current promotion of the annual Youth Commission survey. If appointed, I will continue the past Commissioner’s legacy of creating an annual survey for youth, hosting annual policythons, volunteering at community events such as Bark in the Park and Viva Calle SJ, outreaching for diverse youth to get involved in local politics, and writing a plethora of policy proposals for the people, the marginalized and underrepresented communities that I call home.

Question applies to Youth Commission
In one paragraph, please explain your community interests.

My community interests involve bettering the environment through policy proposals. As a part of the YAC, inequalities in housing and income were brought to my attention. Gentrification became a monthly discussion, and youth civic engagement in voting accessibility became a hot topic. With the current Youth Commissioner and other Youth Advisory Council members, many of these policy memorandums helped address those inequalities while communicating other ideas to focus on as a city, ranging from racial equity, sustainable architecture, and mental health.

Question applies to Youth Commission
What do you feel are some of the problems facing the youth of San Jose? Unequal and lack of housing is among one of the greatest challenges youth in San Jose face. Without proper housing, youth are constantly facing issues outside of the stress school brings. As a student attending a school in which the majority of students are non-white, I noticed that there weren’t that many opportunities that were spread out. Most of the time, people received information by personally seeking it out instead of having helpful organizations such as the Youth Commission promoted. Because of this, there is a lot of lack of civil engagement and diversity in local politics from youth. Lastly, the environment is another issue that youth face in San Jose. Climate change will affect my generation, and if appointed, I want to continue pursuing policies that address sustainable practices, such as sustainable architecture, strategic deconstruction, and more from other cities internationally.

Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel the priorities of the Youth Commission should be? The priorities of the Youth Commission should be to promote pre-existing local/city resources to youth, to encourage diverse youth participation in local government and elections, and to focus on the environment and our city’s sustainability with the current Climate Smart San Jose Plan. The City of San Jose already has many resources for youth and marginalized communities, such as a master document on housing resources. I believe that the Commission should focus on promoting such information to engage more youth and build a relationship of trust between youth and local government. As for diversity, I believe the Commission should be more energetic in its focuses to target marginalized youth. In the past, the Youth Commission has led budget summits where youth advocated for their priorities regarding city departments. For this year’s Annual Budget Summit, the current Commissioner and I both outreached to our friend groups and classmates to diversify the participation in the budget summit; as a result, working youth, more youth of color, and more youth from traditionally “unreached” communities were brought to the budget summit. Furthermore, I believe that the Youth Commission should have closer relations with their corresponding Council District Offices. I know that the current Commissioner for D3 is working more closely with their Council District Office to discuss policy memorandums and how their goals align with the Council District Office’s goals. I believe that this type of synergetic relationship should be pursued by the entire Commission to forward their policy goals and communications with our local government.

Additionally, in Youth Commission meetings and town halls, the environment and housing were some of the highest priorities, and I believe we should follow through with our youths’ priorities.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

In the Youth Advisory Council, I was the Vice-Chair and helped Commissioner Hoang outreach to local youth about policy proposals and opportunities for their voices to be heard. I helped draft several policy memorandums regarding the environment, racial inequity, and gender inequity. Additionally, I helped facilitate monthly D3 Youth Advisory Council meetings in which we had an open discussion about future policy ideas and events. I also help write the agendas and use creative slide decks for our monthly Youth Advisory Council meetings to further engage my peers. In terms of specific policy delegation, I have been responsible for touching base with fellow members on their roles and responsibilities.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

With the experience of being the District 3 YAC Vice-Chair, I began to understand the role local youth and the Youth Commission had on the well-being of the city and people. With Commissioner Hoang and the District 3 Youth Advisory Council, I started developing my communication skills by discussing with others and participating in Zoom meetings that addressed budget priority and the passing of policies. I grew my skills in teamwork and learned how to effectively reach out to others in and outside of the council, and worked on my organization skills. Finally, from both my school involvement in Speech and Debate and my current position of Vice-Chair on the District 3 Youth Advisory Council, I have built my leadership skills by honing in on policy responsibilities and working with a fellow member (Amelie Pak) to create a streamlined financial literacy curriculum to send to the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force for their Santa Clara County partners.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The San Jose Youth Commission is a city advisory board made of 11 youth members that advise the Mayor and City Council on youth priorities, policies, and other issues and initiatives. The Youth Commission also serves as the main conduit between youth and their local government through Youth Advisory Councils, Town Halls, Budget Summits, and the annual Youth Commission work plan that addresses both social issues and policy issues within the City of San Jose.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

Housing, socio-economic inequities, and the environment.

Some of the policy proposals I worked on in the Youth Advisory Council were the San Francisco C.A.R.E.N. I was one of the founding members of the annual District 3 Citywide Youth Survey; this year, we engaged over 400 youth through this survey in tandem with our new partnership with the San Jose Public Library Department. This year will also be the year of our second Annual Policython Summit, an event where we teach youth in live-time how to write policy memorandums on a sample subject from our annual District 3 Survey.

Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel are some of the problems facing the youth of San Jose?

1. Lack of opportunity to participate in the tech economy - The overall economy of the Bay Area is booming but lots of under-privileged youth do not have access to the right education that would make them be employed by these large companies. We cannot solve our biggest challenges like climate change without using technology at all levels, and educating our youth is super critical for that.

2. Social inequality
- We live in an affluent area but that also has some of the highest levels of homelessness and substance abuse. We have to create programs that can help minimize these gaps, especially as we are now competing in a global economy and cannot afford to leave our youth behind.

Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel the priorities of the Youth Commission should be?

1. Creating an even playing field for youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. We can do this by reducing the barriers in technical / STEM education and by creating more opportunities for internships at our local companies.

2. We live in a very diverse and multi lingual community, and it is vital that we are able to bring people together in a way that connects us all with our shared goals and not be distracted by our differences. The Youth Commission can play an important role in this because every youth that feels like they belong in our City will be a lifelong positive contributor to our City.
