What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? My understanding of the purpose of the Commission is to advise the city council on all matters pertaining to The Arts.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.
1. Sustainable funding for the Arts ecosystem. 2. A percent for public art in private development. 3.
Rebuilding the Office of Cultural Affairs staff to pre-2008 levels, when it lost all General Fund support due to the Great Recession.
Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe recent San José arts activities you have participated in during the last twelve months (up to five activities) and what drew you to attend? Unfortunately due to Covid and living with my senior mother, I had to keep my San Jose Arts activities very limited during the last twelve months. However, I did have the opportunity to attend the CityDance at SJ Museum of Art and art opening, REO Speedwagon at SJ Civic Auditorium, DJ (Music) Support at The Continental, First Friday, and run in Pat’s Run (Pat Tillman was a close family friend). Past activities include: SV Creates Awards/Content Mag Parties, The Backyard Project Ribbon Cutting, and San Jose Obon Festival.
Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe the ways in which you believe the arts bring value to the general community.
The Arts brings people together, reflecting community values, creating innovation, and promoting interaction and understanding. It can transcend cultural barriers to help the humanities and the humanities lead to appreciation of various cultures.
Question applies to
Arts Commission
Should the City of San José have an active role in arts and cultural development? If so, in what ways and why?
The City of San Jose should absolutely have an active role in the arts and cultural development. The financial support and active promotion would build economic sustainability and bring much needed revenue while revitalizing communities and social cohesion. Creative expression is a key tool to cultivate a better San Jose.

Question applies to Arts Commission
How can you contribute to advising City Council on policy and programs related to cultural development in San José?
My childhood background, work history, and world travels brings a deep sense of cross-cultural understanding and extreme interest in advising and supporting policy and programs. I am a fourth generation Bay Area Japanese-American woman with deep roots in San Jose which include my grandfather being considered the “Mayor of Japantown.” My father attended San Jose High School representing his school at CA Boy’s Town. As a child I remember going to the Big Bone game on Thanksgiving against Lincoln High School. My mother is a retired teacher but still actively involved on many on boards. I grew up in Almaden Valley at a time when neighborhoods had many cultures due to the creation of Silicon Valley. I’ve always participated in civic groups such as being President of Key Club at Leland High School to being the student representative at Bret Harte Middle school regarding Desegregation.
Anything else you would like us to know?
I’ve always supported The Arts by executive producing bands, curating art shows, supporting the local art scene while working in tech. I feel my diverse work background and personal interest would greatly benefit the Commission. My hometown is San Jose. I’ve been back for several years now from San Francisco and quite frankly, I’m tired of trying to defend it to the San Francisco community or to any other.
I want to be active in San Jose’s Renaissance! Additional references: Rami Soudah - Davin Miyoshi - Lucy Sisman -

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
As a mother of 11 year old twins, and as a volunteer in both of their classrooms, I was able to see firsthand what an impact reading had not only on academic achievement, but for student confidence, as well.
Our libraries are a wonderful resource for our children and community, and.I would work to like to see more structured programs to encourage and engage younger readers, as well as English learners.
Additionally, I have experienced first hand how our local libraries have become more of a daycare rather than a valuable resource for learning and studying.
I don't have the answers or parameters of what could
to be done about this, but my goal is learn as much as I can to bring the libraries into a place of peaceful, cooperative learning and resources.
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I have a Masters in Learning Sciences, so I have an understanding of how minds develop with respect to learning, and how important "learning by doing" is to master skills rather than passively reading in a book.I would love to see more tutoring programs, especially in traditionally under-represented areas.
I am also a
mother of two 11 year olds and have first hand experience with the libraries' areas of excellence, as well as ideas on how to improve.
I am a fair team player, I like to collaborate, and learn about different points of view.
I am inclusive and a natural leader.

I have not held positions on a government commission or board, however I have held positions on the Noble Elementary Parent participation Executive Board, as well as the Noble Elementary Executive PTA.
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social, Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).
I am a parent, a life-long learner, and someone who wants to make change for the better. The confluence of my education, experience as a parent and member of school boards, married with my passion to get involved for all children - at the ground. up - make me a qualified applicant for this position. As a product manager and product marketing manager, I learned the best decisions are those based on data, so there is no ambiguity , but in the absence of data, a supportive, collaborative and "can do" team makes all the difference.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Library and Education Commission makes recommendations to the City Council based on studies, reviews, and evaluations to advocate and promote library services. The Commission works as a catalyst between the public and their needs, along with City Council and the library employees who are responsible for implementing the tactics of the agreed upon programs.
The Commission is also
responsible for making informed recommendations about the operational and capital expenditures across locations and programs.
regarding existing or proposed library facilities, programs, operations, services and financing. The commission advocates improved library service, and as a forum for public discussion of library needs, the commission facilitates communication between the public, the City Council and library staff.

What involvement have you had in library and/or early education issues? I was a pre-school teacher years and years ago, but I have worked with children as young as 2 months from the time I was 9 years old. I have 2 children of my own, and have become well-versed in childhood learning, challenges and programs that can be effective to promote engagement, confidence and success.
Last, I am very passionate about how children learn, and based on my Learning Sciences Masters, I have studied the best ways to children to learn, as well as hiccups along the way (developmental and emotional).

Would you be willing to attend local special events/meetings as a representative of the Library and Early Education Commission?
Yes, of course.

Anything else you would like us to know?
I would like to be on the Committee because I want to make a difference - not just for my own children, but or all constituents in the district.
I have always been a "do-er", and challenge my own children to solve problems, not complain about them. In taking my own advice, this is a great way to get involved and see what the future holds as far as additional roles I may want to take in the future.

I want to be a member of this commission due to passionate ideas I have for amending culture and social style in San Jose for the better of all it's residents. As I member, I can bring my dedication, passion, and hardworking ethics to the table and provide a perspective that is very different from many students due to my diverse background. One of many objectives I have is to fix the homeless population in San Jose which has sky rocketed after our deadly pandemic. Another issue as a member/commissioner I would like to fix is the religious inequality in our city, racial discrimination can be very different than religious discrimination because religious discrimination comes from denying and abusing someone's beliefs.
Lastly, I would like to provide a much more improved and coordinated AIM for the Youth Commission this year where we have a much more diverse and organized group of speakers and audience for our youth.
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I believe that I have some very important skills such as public speaking, argumentation, leadership, teamwork, and policy drafting that can be usefully applied to the Youth Commission. I have 8 years of Speech and Debate practice which has taught me much about advocating for myself and others. I worked with the Santa Clara County and the State Department to draft bills and propositions for election ballots and proposals to present the governor.

Youth Commission
In one paragraph, please explain your community interests.
Majority of my community interested stem from social equality and justice such as the end of poverty, racial/religious discrimination, and financial struggle. The reason I am passionate about ending poverty in San Jose is because poverty affects the culture and society our city stands on, when there is more poverty, the more un-inclusive and segregated our city looks but most of all, it affects the residents in some of the worst ways with no access to clean water, clean clothes, and shelter, many of these people are subjected to pain with no medical relief. A reason why I am passionate about ending racial/religious discrimination is because as a South Asian Muslim woman myself, I have experienced both forms of discrimination and I want to raise awareness so that this can be prevented from happening to someone else. Lastly, many people in San Jose struggle financially to keep up with the extremes cost of living in the Bay Area, I want to provide events, opportunities and programs for financially struggling residents to receive aid.
Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel are some of the problems facing the youth of San Jose? I believe that a huge issue the youth are facing are adjusting to life back in person from distance learning.
Many students became comfortable and adapted to the online distance learning style and going back in person has taken a huge toll on their mental health. Alongside the students who are struggling academically to adjust back to the in-person learning style. Many students face social anxiety and depression from losing loved ones due to Covid. Another issue that has stung for youth of San Jose is the stereotype against Asians revolving around covid which has resulted in extreme hate crimes and discriminatory actions. Lastly, there has been a new and recent awareness in school revolving around sexual harassment on campuses. Students face sexual harassment and assult with a lack of sexual education in schools.
Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel the priorities of the Youth Commission should be? I believe that the main priority of the Youth Commission this year should be tackling the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, with all the financial struggles, poverty, and racial stigmas that have been created after the pandemic, alongside the impact of mental health it has had on the youth of San Jose. The youth commission should do their best to legally or eventfully raise awareness on these issues and do their best to fix it for our city.

As a member of the District 4 Youth Advisory Commission, my experience was very educational and memorable. I was able to meet such intellectual individuals with such progressive mindsets that are advocates for change such as myself and that was refreshing. I was able to learn so much by conversing with people from different backgrounds and I learned more about how law is facilitated on a city level.
Most of all, I was so happy to advocate for the issues I am passionate about and have the ablity to initiate change.
