I have been involved in the issues of mobile home communities for15 years. I have been both President and Vice President of my communities HOA and have been directly involved in two rental rights hearings.

I have kept up with other mobile home communities issues so I am very aware of the issues and problems these communities face. I was also an apartment renter in San Jose facing 9% increases every year. It became cheaper to purchase my mobile home.

I have received recognition for my work helping to create the portal pilot customer facing portal for the consumer, a client that is unhoused to utilize.

They are able to login and access their information and be knowledgeable of where they are in the process of getting housing. This program allows them to pin their location of where they are currently living, have email correspondence through messaging with their case manager, update them on upcoming appointments they may have, upload stand photocopies of important documentation, provides a resource guide and is user-friendly and easy for them to utilize.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.

I would love to become a member of the Housing and Community Development Commission because as a person with lived experience of homelessness I believe I would bring a different perspective and outlook to the commission. I want to be able to advocate and give a voice to the people in the community that usually go unheard, the unhoused community. Today I am gratefully a contributing member of society and I have the advantage of having two perspectives I can openly advocate on and give a voice to.

Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I would like to share that after experiencing homelessness for three years here in Santa Clara County and within my hometown of San Jose that I am proudly born and raised in, I am passionate about getting involved in helping to house not only unhoused individuals but also all that are low income and must utilize affordable housing to provide safety and home for themselves and/or their family.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I currently serve on the Lived Experience Advisory Board (LEAB) and I have been an executive board member as well on that Board.

As an executive board member I was the community relations coordinator and I was responsible of creating and nurturing relationships with different entities within the community of Santa Clara County for LEAB
members to participate in. I have also participated in general and numerous advisory committees including West Valley Community Services advisory committee of people with lived experience of homelessness.

Once a month we participate in a “action hour” where we hands on make phone calls or reach out to members of this city as an attempt to get their backing over a topic or issue we want to bring awareness to within the unhoused community.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

I have attended and completed training provided by Toastmasters so as to improve and strengthen my public speaking in any environment, as well as effectively and efficiently delivering a quality message.

Through CEN Center for excellence in nonprofits I have taken many of their trainings and workshops in conjunction with currently being a part of the cohort for building representative boards BRB that I was chosen to participate in. I have taken the “Fundraising Basics” training where we explored the basic fundraising process, reviewed the board’s role in fundraising, gained the framework to build a comprehensive fundraising plan, and learned how to develop and communicate a case for support. I also have completed the "Making the Ask" fundraising training where we explored and practiced strategies and techniques to set proper expectations (clarifying roles), how to expand my team's ability to raise money for our organization, and maximize our impact. I have taken a training and am knowledgeable of “Intentional Branding: You and Your Organization” which applies to organizations and individuals alike. In the workshop, we were encouraged to define our personal professional brands and do so in service and support of our organizations’ brands as well. I have taken a training on “Compassionate Leadership” where we unpacked the nonprofit sector’s historical leadership models that fall short of serving the creation of an IDEAL workspace. We explored what it means to lead with wisdom and compassion and to strike a balance between the two. I have taken a training on “Leading Others Through Change” which was designed to provide the tools and techniques to lead my organization through times of change and crisis more effectively. As a result I left with a clearer understanding of what happens to people when an organizational change initiative (both expected and unexpected) occurs, and felt more prepared to address the myriad challenges that come my way. I’ve attending a training on “Preventing Burnout: Self- Care in a Selfless Sector” which provides the space and tools to help me lean in without burning out. We engaged in productive conversations that explored new strategies and coping skills while gaining tangible resources to identify workplace stressors, end self-deprecating talk, build communicative workplace structures, and calmly deal with change at any level in an organization. I also have completed a Management and leadership training titled “Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, & Liberation (IDEAL)” which was a 2-day program and was a genuine, candid space to explore the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Liberation (IDEAL) and the effect of these principles on the community I serve and my organization as a whole.

The sessions were intended to provide a respectful,
nonjudgmental space and opportunity for growth and thought-partnership.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? To my understanding The Housing and Community Development Commission (HCDC) consists of members who advise the Director of Housing, the Mayor, and the City Council on housing and community development matters.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

An individual with lived experience of homelessness in San Jose, I am most definitely am interested in the development and creation of more housing for the current on house members of this community and County. I'm interested to see how the commission can help guide and advocate to the mayor and city council regarding this epidemic of homelessness currently occurring in Santa Clara County.

Question applies to
Housing and Community Development Commission
What experience do you have with affordable housing issues? I personally recall as a child having housing with my mother who was a single parent of my older sister and I.

I remember when she got a better job to provide for us we soon after lost our apartment and housing because it was determined that she made too much money.

This was almost 25 years ago and
the memory is very fresh of having to be uprooted from everything I was familiar with and knew as home and being forced to move in with my grandparents. Since then I believe there have been a lot of improvements, however the qualifications that determine affordable housing must be diligently reviewed and discussed, so as to better provide affordable housing to individuals who truly need it in Santa Clara County.

Question applies to
Housing and Community Development Commission
Please explain your familiarity with the Community Development Block Grant Program? I have heard of this grant mentioned previously And I am aware that it is a fund from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development that is provided annually to the city of San Jose. It funds various nonprofit agencies and other city departments to implement services that benefit low and moderate income persons, resolve slum and blight concerns and address community development needs. The grantees of the program are generally selected through a competitive process and are provided with such services as senior daycare and respite, homeless outreach, housing rehabilitation, and code enforcement.

If you are applying for the Lived Experience Seat, please describe your experience with homelessness. Include when and for how long you experienced homelessness, and any information you'd like to share about how you lost your housing.

My journey and becoming homeless started with having a car accident in Yosemite while working at San Jose Family Camp and sustaining a brain injury.

This occurred in June of 2014, after which I was
rehabilitating for the next three months. During this time I was staying with close friends on their couch and they helped me as I was rehabilitating. I began to experience heavy depression because of the cognitive issues and behavioral issues that I had after obtaining the brain injury.

I didn't want to be a
burden and so I began to live out of an old SUV that was given to me by one of the friends I was staying with. I was then given a car by my mother and used that to drive around during the day and I used the SUV to sleep in at night.

This went on
until around August of 2015 when both vehicles were eventually towed for different reasons. When this occurred I was then physically on foot and only was allowed to grab the handful of items from my vehicle before it was taken into the tow yard. My journey began first over off of Monterey Road and Tully/Curtner area. I experienced here the first feeling of loss when someone took all of my more expensive possessions.

I assumed you knew what it felt like to literally only
have the clothes on your back and have to start all over again.

This occurred numerous times over the
years that I was unhoused.

Everytime it became less and less detrimental to my life and I became accustomed to simply starting over from nothing. I soon realized and learned that being a woman on the streets was extremely dangerous and my safety was always in jeopardy. In order to be safe as a woman living on the streets you either became pimped out, a “mama” of a camp, which meant you could never leave it and looked over it, or you had to become the best at everything of the lifestyle. This meant everything from stealing to violence, to having the best drugs and array of criminal activity. Never in my life as a child did I ever for once believe that when I got older I would become homeless.

However, due to
a series of events this became the reality in the summer of 2014. In 2015 after losing both my vehicles in the safety that it provided I relocated to the downtown San Jose area. Everyone on the southside of San Jose told me to stay away from downtown because it was the most dangerous place to be home with that.

This is the reason I went there.

I knew that I had to become somebody I didn't recognize anymore if I was going to survive being homeless.

I only remember how terrified I was and I truly believed that I was going to die while living on the streets.

But when you are pushed to the limit every single day and you are forced to live in the state of “survival mode”
24/7, you learn what you're really made of; who you are at the core of your essence.

I never lost my compassion and kindness in spite of the obstacles and tribulations I was faced with.

I was homeless from the summer of 2014 until I got housing in the summer of 2017.

During
this time I was assaulted physically numerous times, I was raped numerous times oh, I was robbed numerous times
and I was incarcerated Elmwood numerous times for a plethora of different charges. I was blessed with receiving a Housing Voucher in the summer of 2017 and have since sustained my housing and have remained housed in San Jose.

I am passionate about working with the unhoused
immunity as well as initiating discussion around policy reform to decriminalize homelessness and improve affordable housing in Santa Clara County.

Question applies to
Housing and Community Development Commission
How would you use your experience with homelessness to inform your work on the Commission?
I would love to be provided with the opportunity to serve on the commission because I believe my lived experience with having been homeless allows me an insight that is unparalleled to the members that are currently sitting on the commission.

I would love the chance to be able to bring a voice of lived experience into The Housing and Community Development commission in our County.

Prior to recent events in the
way people value the expertise of those with live experience, there has not been a voice to advocate for this demographic in commissions and Boards or councils of the city of San Jose and within Santa Clara
County.

Having a voice to represent every demographic of our community is essential to creating a city and environment that is racially equitable for all citizens and members of that community.

Anything else you would like us to know?
I would generally be honored and humbled to be chosen as a member on the Housing and Community Development commission so as to not only fullfill my civil duties to my hometown but also to have the honorable opportunity to bring insight and input from the perspective of a person with lived experience.

I
am currently a student at San Jose City College and I'm majoring in psychology and social justice. I simply desire and hope to make the world a better place because I am aware that even the smallest of voices can make an impact in change.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.

San Jose is about to go through a period of transformation that it has never seen before, and I want to be a part of it. Big tech and foreign investment has already changed the housing landscape and has hit the working class and poor the hardest. Heritage has always been the face of San Jose, but that is on the verge of changing, bringing more displacement and gentrification of under-served communities. I want to be a voice for these communities, and help San Jose transform into a City with fair, affordable, inclusive housing that is true.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.

I am a member of the Unhoused Task Force of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, which sought to have all cities within the county commit to the Community Plan to End Homelessness.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment to the selected commission(s).

I have been on both ends of the spectrum when it comes to homelessness. I have worked in the corporate world, having no idea about the homeless or their experiences. I have lived the homeless experience and know the misconceptions and labels placed on everyone who lives on the streets. I am educated and have the ability to digest and discuss technical information, while also being grounded and an advocate for the unhoused. I have experienced the mental health, sheltered and unsheltered aspects of homelessness, along with the eviction and displacement aspect of renting. I have been an advocate for the homeless for about four years and continue to advocate despite being homeless myself.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Commission analyzes prioritized information related to all aspects of housing the City performs, or wishes to perform. Based on these priorities and funding, the Commission seeks to determine the best actions that will allow the City to continue to meet past goals, current goals, and future goals. This is done with an eye on economic growth, equitable community development and housing affordability/accessibility.

All recommendations made to various parties potentially affect the identity of San Jose through its residents.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Commission should address.

Question applies to
Housing and Community Development Commission
Please explain your familiarity with the Community Development Block Grant Program? I am not deeply familiar with the program. My personal, simple description is that it is an amount of federal funding received on an annual basis, that is to be used to help poor/under-represented residents and communities that are in need. Entities bid and are awarded project funding based on the expectation that they will make a difference in the lives of those they serve. It can be a substantial amount of a non profits funding.

If you are applying for the Lived Experience Seat, please describe your experience with homelessness. Include when and for how long you experienced homelessness, and any information you'd like to share about how you lost your housing.

I have been homeless since 2015. It really began with an eviction in 2013, which led me to stay in hotels with my son for about 3 months before
couch surfing with friends for half a year and finally finding a new apartment. My complex was sold and the new owner wanted to move into my unit (since it was the best kept and cleanest). I did not want to move out of the school district my autistic son was in, and commuted him from various places in the county for a summer and from South San Jose to Cupertino during the school year. My long term stint with homelessness began in 2015 after I was hospitalized with mental health issues and lost my job because of returning back to work too soon, and was evicted again. I lost custody of my son during that period and he has not lived with me full time since, even though he lived with me full time before everything fell apart. I am educated, and also neuro-divergent a fact people weren't as understanding of in the past. Mental health and homelessness is very important to me because of my past experiences. I was forced out of the corporate world, and lost my livelihood and my family, but I always kept my son as a priority and always worked to provide for him. I have lived on the streets, in my car (when I would have one), in my storage unit, in hotels and in shelters. There's a lot more that has occurred during this time, but this is the gist of it.
