Supplemental Questions
Question applies to
Youth Commission
Please list your community involvement, including jobs and volunteer work.
Last summer, I completed the Project Hope Youth Ambassador program. As part of the program, I helped plan events to clean-up my community. Project Hope Youth Ambassadors also planned a community meeting at the Foxdale Apartments to learn more about the residents' needs. I continue to participate in the Welch Park neighborhood litter pick-up events every month.
Question applies to
Youth Commission
In one paragraph, please explain your community interests.
Over the past few years, I have noticed that blight and public safety have improved in my neighborhood.
The streets and parks are cleaner now because of the community's involvement in organizing litter pick- ups and addressing illegal dumping. It feels safer, cleaner and healthier now. Our public safety has gotten better because we now have easy contact with the police. Our community works together with SJPD to address crime in our area, so now our community feels safer knowing that there are more patrols in our area. I am interested in bringing more of these types of relationships, resources and events to my community.
Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel are some of the problems facing the youth of San Jose? Some of the problems that youth in San Jose are facing are gang violence, graffiti and blight. When youth see a lot of gang related stuff (like graffiti) in their neighborhood, it makes them feel unsafe in their community and scared to go outside and have fun like they used to. When a teenager gets involved in gangs, it can affect their outlook on life and the opportunities they have as adults. For teenagers that are at-risk of joining a gang, there should be more supports so that they can focus on school, improve their mental health, and have a good life.
Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel the priorities of the Youth Commission should be? I think that a priority for the Youth Commission should be to include diverse voices. It's important for diverse voices to be heard so we can better understand the different needs of our community, especially of people who are really struggling with money for housing, food and other basic necessities.
If applicable, have you ever attended or watched a meeting of the Commission(s) to which you are applying?

I am bilingual and speak English and Spanish. I have been involved in the Welch Park Neighborhood Association for 3 years, since I was 13.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? My understanding of the purpose of the Commission is that it gives youth an opportunity to share our voices and concerns, so that we can help create change in the City of San Jose.
