Dear Mayor & Councilmembers,
As a San Jose resident in District 2, I am writing to support a Special Election to fill the vacancies in Districts 8 and 10.
I spoke in favor of this item on December 5, 2022, along with approximately 300, who were also in favor of holding a special election to fill the vacancies - and to my disgust - our pleas were ignored and the outgoing Council decided to fill the vacancies by appointment. Democracy is dead if this is allowed to happen.
The reasons given: cost - as outgoing Mayor Sam Liccardo pointed out, the cost of the election comes from a different budget and is already allowed for. It does not impact general services. And in any event, it is a small portion of the overall annual budget.

Length of time Districts would not have representation: That can be overcome by appointing a member to represent the District until the vacancy is filled by the Special Election. And, both offices have staff employed who carry on the business of the District. Districts 8 and 10 would not be ill-served during this time.
This is an important issue - one that I am making the time to address, despite the fact that I am currently in N. Ireland, taking care of a desperately ill husband. He is in critical condition in the ICU of Ulster Hospital with a severe case of pancreatitis. I am only mentioning this to emphasize how concerned I am about the issue of holding a Special Election.
A poll has shown that the majority of San Jose residents support a Special Election. I hope this time you will listen to the voice of the people and support DEMOCRACY.

San Jose Spotlight Joseph Geha has misrepresented me by saying “Singh declined to share contact information for his sister in India.”, in its recent article dated Jan. 20, 2023 by Joseph Geha with heading “Allegations surface against San Jose council hopefuls”. During the Interview I had said that I cannot give contact for my sister due to her doctor’s instructions that she not be disturbed in anyway due to her on- going Mental Health.
I also told Joseph that her illness could be from her major car accident in 1995 or from childhood, which was totally disregarded in the article.
I again reiterate that I have never seen any abuse of any sort mentioned in the article while I stayed with Sukhdev Singh Bainiwal and my sister in 1997 and 1998.

Not only that, he is very intelligent and has a vast business background.
This means he will have a running start to step into the Sylvia Arenas position and be well versed in voting with all of you City Council Members on key areas. He will do his homework and be ready to vote in ways that truly represent all cultures in our community. This is why we want you to select him for this important position!
Besides being intelligent he is a great communicator. He respects all equally (women and men) and he works well on projects and community objectives with all cultures with great respect such as Muslim, Hindu, Hispanic, African American Community, ikh, LBGTQ, Catholic and all others. He works well with everyone! He treats all people equally and walks well among everyone. We greatly respect him and all he does for District 8 and other areas of San Jose. We are very fortunate he is asking to take this 2 year responsibility!
He listens well and that affords him great wisdom in his success of being solution oriented. In a nutshell, he is inclusive, and will do an outstanding job in the open City Council Position because he has the experience, knowledge, and ability.
Sukhdev Bainiwal is your go-to choice to replace Sylvia Arenas in the District 8 Councilperson position.
Another thing, Sukhdev will visit and communicate with all communities in District 8. And for me, as a resident, it would be so forward and good for the San Jose City Council to honor the people from India who make up a large part of this area, by having a person who is Indian to serve on the San Jose City Council.
So, again, Sukhdev has worked and continues to work with all cultures, all people, all religions and too we (many I know in District 8 Community) want you to vote in Sukhdev for the District 8 City Council Position for the 2 year position) because it will be best for District 8.

I believe local government needs a representative that lives and breathes the everyday life of his/her constituents. Patti worked with the school communities, neighborhood associations, religious communities, and businesses to understand their needs and wants.
