Dear Mayor Mahan and Member of the San Jo e City Council,

I am writing in upport of Wendi Mahaney Gurahoo’ candidacy for the vacancy in Di trict 10

I’ve known Wendi since she joined the City’s Library and Early Education Commission (LEEC) in 2017. Since that time, she has shown herself to be thoughtful and conscientious in working for the betterment of our community. Wendi is the exact type of person that residents of San Jose would be lucky to have representing them on City Council to try and solve the challenges that face our city.

Wendi is a community impact leader with over 30 years of experience in advocacy, policy development, communication , operation , in government, non profit, and private ector She currently chair the City’s Library and Education Commission. Dedicated to public service, Wendi also serves as the Vice Pre ident of the San Jo e Unified School Di trict Board of Tru tee , repre enting much of the city council district.

This message is from outside the City email system. Do not open links or attachments from untrusted sources.

I support Wendi because she has a track record of advocating for the people of San Jose. In 2018, she helped lead the charge to remove fine on children’ material from the San Jo e Public Library y tem, which was adopted by city council that same year. Her experience with First 5 Santa Clara County and SCCOE give her in ight on how the other local government agencie interact with our city government And lastly, she has experience as chair of the LEEC and as Vice-President of the San Jose Unified School Di trict Board of Tru tee that will be critical to her ucceeding a a councilmember from day 1 Wendi will hit the ground running for the residents of District 10.

Please appoint Wendi to the District 10 seat.

Sincerely,
Michael Melillo
San Jo e Re ident
Former Chair, San Jose Library and Early Education Commission Former Tru tee, San Jo e Unified School Di trict

San Jose City Clerk Toni Taber,
I am writing in regard to the appointment process to fill San José Districts 8 and 10.

As a San José resident, it’s clear to me that our city is currently at a critical juncture, in dire need of resources and solutions for public safety, parks, and vital infrastructure. The people of San José are ready to work together with our neighbors and our communities to build a better city!
As you decide who will represent District 8 and 10 on our city council, I urge you to consider leaders that truly represent our broad and vibrant democracy and can deliver good jobs, accessible housing for all, safer neighborhoods, and the prosperity that we all dream of for our families and communities.

I stand alongside a broad coalition of partners from labor, community, and multi-ethnic organizations in supporting a process that would lead to genuine representation for our communities.

Dear Mayor Mahan and Members of the San Jose City Council:

I am wring in support of Wendi Mahaney Gurahoo’s candidacy for the vacancy in District 10 As an experienced SJUSD teacher, I can confidently say that Wendi’s leadership was paramount to our district as we navigated through the pandemic She helped implement important and fundamental changes to the way our district operated in light of and despite the challenges we faced.

As a result of her leadership, we expanded food distribuon to all students and family members, secured digital devices (hotspot and laptops), and distributed them to families in need, and repurposed the dues of bus drivers to do wellness checks on missing students She cared for our students' educaon and basic needs and worked to implement Ethnic Studies classes and our new policy on Grading for Equity.

Wendi has the drive, the willpower, and the track record of hard work and accomplishments that indicates the great leader she will be on San Jose City Council. She has faced tough decisions and difficult residents before as a school board member She has navigated tense public meengs with dignity and grace She has managed mul million-dollar budgets in several capacies. Subject: Appoint David Heindel for D10 Council Posion 2023/01/26

Dear Councilmember Davis:

As a resident of D10, I support David Heindel for an appointment for the D10 council position This decision is based on reviewing the applications and listening to the Almaden Valley Community Association meetings held on Thursday and Friday The bases for this decision include the following:
1 David is the only applicant that stated clearly that he did not intent to run for election in 2024.

I do not think an applicant that intents to run should be appointed as this provides a significant incumbency advantage for them This advantage could mean that the council decision to appoint instead of allow a special election could impact D10 representation not just for 2 years, but for 6 years. This makes the council decision and appointment even more far-reaching.

2. After redistricting in San Jose, David, as the leader of the D10 Leadership Coalition, worked to include representation in the organization from the newly added, former D2 neighborhoods into the district For example, Greg Peck, from Los Pasos Neighborhood Association, was added to the leadership as Vice President.

3. The D10 Leadership Coalition of which David is President has Working Groups which are teams of resident working on various issues and concerns in the district These teams have also worked closely with the Council office to assist residents in solving issues. This is a constructive, solution-oriented practice.

This message is from outside the City email system. Do not open links or attachments from untrusted sources. 4 Under David’s leadership there has been Neighborhood Associations started or reestablished.

5. David has and does serve on City Commissions.

6. David is a small, downtown, business owner. His experience will provide a varied input for the Council.

Please vote to appoint Dave Heindel.

Respectfully,
Sandra A. Delvin, PE
D10 Resident

Dear Mayor and Council,
As Chair of the League of Conservation Voters Santa Clara County, I am writing to convey our recommendations for the D10 and D8 Council appointments.

The League of Conservation Voters is the political arm of the environmental movement with a focus on identifying and supporting environmentally-minded candidates. After reviewing the finalists, the Board voted unanimously to endorse Domingo Candelas for District 8 and Wendy Mahaney-Gurahoo for District 10. As an aside, Mr. Candelas serves on the LCV Board and was recruited several years ago given his strong environmental values.

If you have any questions about our recommendations, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself or anyone else on the League Board of Directors.

Thank you for your community service.

Dear Mayor Mahan, Vice-Mayor Kamei, and Councilmembers:

I am a District 10 resident and I urge you appoint a pro-housing councilmember to represent my district.

Housing affordability is my number one issue and the high cost of housing, both owning and renting, negatively impacts me and so many of the people I care about. I encourage you to appoint a councilmember who understands that we are suffering from a major housing shortage and that we need more of everything - from more market rate housing to deed-restricted affording housing to permanent supportive housing.

I love that we live in a diverse city that has historically enabled economic mobility and I'm worried that the housing shortage threatens our vibrancy and prosperity. Please appoint someone who is committed to working with you all to advance solutions to build more homes in San Jose.

Thank you.

Good evening to all.

It is with great honor that I write to you asking for your consideration of Council Member applicant Dennis Hawkins.

I had the privilege of working with Mr. Hawkins as an employee and resident of the Oak Grove School District in San Jose, CA.

As a registered voter and employee of our area, I was very impressed with Mr. Hawkins honesty, integrity, and fairness in decision making for our community. Mr. Hawkins had always shown the utmost respect for our District and its community as a whole, including employees, and first and foremost, our children.

Mr. Hawkins also portrayed important critical thinking skills, asking questions as to better be informed in

his decision making when policies and procedures were brought before our District.

I would support his efforts to become a very active, fair, and reasonable candidate for the vacancy that is needing to be filled.

Please consider Mr. Hawkins as an asset to our City Council.

Respectfully and sincerely,
Barbara Sutton

Subject: Dennis Hawkins for District 10

Good aernoon,

I would like to highly encourage your appointment of Dennis Hawkins to the vacant seat le by Mr. Mahan in District 10. I have known Dennis for over 25 years, both personally and professionally as parents, neighbors, and an employee of Oak Grove School District.

Our children aended school together since Kindergarten in Oak Grove School District (OGSD) where he was elected as an outstanding Board of Trustees member for over 24 years. He listened to the community and staff and was always the voice of reason on our board. I found him to be fair and honest when it came to making the toughest decisions, especially when it came to closing schools in our district. He was the leader that helped make this process less painful for all of us.

Dennis' extensive experience in public management will help him be producve on the Council because he knows the city operaons and has common sense ideas on how to improve the City of San Jose. As a mother-in-law of a SJPD Public Safety Officer, I know Dennis is commied to improving public safety, starng with hiring more police officers, strengthening community policing, and promong more crime prevenon programs, which will help homeowners (like myself) and residents protect themselves, their family, and their neighborhoods.

As an employee of OGSD for 22 years, I know he also cares deeply about the safety of the children and staff in our schools as proven over and over again as an OGSD Board Member. He has the support of many staff and parents in our community who have worked closely with him over the years. He was a huge presence while honorably serving Oak Grove School District.

As the wife of a City of San Jose Building Inspector Supervisor, I know Dennis has great ideas on how to increase the staffing levels so the City can deliver the services which the people have a right to expect and find new approaches to reducing homelessness and the blight it creates throughout our community.

This message is from outside the City email system. Do not open links or attachments from untrusted sources.

Please appoint Dennis Hawkins as Council Member for District 10 He is fair, honest, responsive, responsible, and accountable to all; not just a select few. More importantly, Dennis is always listening and taking care of business.

Best regards,

Dear City Council Members,

I am writing to express my support for Aryun Batra to be appointed as a Council Member for District 10. I have known Arjun for over 25 years.

I believe is leadership and technical background would be very useful as a Council Member.

Aryn is very open minded to new ideas and is exceptional at organizing and communicating with a group in getting a job done in a timely manner. He would be a great addition to the council to make the San Jose City Homelessness-free.

Hello,

I watched the interviews of the candidates for District 10. If I had the opportunity to vote, Dennis Hawkins has earned my vote hands down Not only is he well informed with the City’s policies, procedures and history Dennis' ability to be a team player, headed towards a diligent thoughtful solution to the issue is what this City needs Dennis seems to be driven by the good of the community and not any personal agenda.

Dennis' humility is admirable and refreshing.

January 23, 2023
Dear Honorable Mayor Mahan and Councilmembers
Subject
: WANT DAVID HEINDEL Appointed as DISTRICT 10 COUNCILMAN

We want DAVID HEINDEL to be appointed as District 10’s representative replacing Mayor Matt Mahan. David Heindel clearly stated he does not intend to run for the 2024 Council member position for District 10. He has given freely of his time and talent to benefit District 10.

We oppose the appointment of Wendi Mahaney Gurahoo for the D10 Council position because she has not been fully vetted by the voters of Almaden Valley (District 10). A few concerns follow
Wendi's election to the SJUSD Board of Trustees was supported by a mayoral candidate who lost D10 by 22 points in the recent mayoral election. Her current appointment is endorsed by a County Supervisor who does not represent D10, and who voted to gerrymander and redistrict Almaden Valley (part of City Council D10) out of County District 1, which is a move widely opposed to by Almaden Valley voters including us
During the Almaden Valley Community Association zoom meeting on 1/20/23, Wendi stated she communicates with parents; however, she then indicated the pandemic caused communication issues Very limp excuse She does not demonstrate real involvement, good communication and listening skills with her

With her poor performance communicating as an SJUSD Board Member, Wendi is clearly not up for the job of representing D-10 residents as our council member.

She approved an official SJUSD response to a Grand Jury Report which spoke poorly about the Grand Jury Members and her Almaden Valley constituents. Is this her approach when she disagrees with people?

PLEASE appoint David HEINDEL as our District 10
Councilman.

Sincerely,
Robert and Barbara Fontana, District 10 residents
