Re: Item 3.5 - Status Report on the November 2018 Ballot Measure T - The Disaster Preparedness, Public Safety, and Infrastructure General Obligation Bond
Dear Mayor Mahan and City Councilmembers,
I am writing to respectfully ask for your support for Councilmembers Candelas and Ortiz’s recommendation to maintain the identified 3.2 million dollars in savings from the acquisition of Coyote Valley to address water quality contamination for Lake Cunningham. With San José’s steady leadership in environmental justice, it is the responsibility of our city government to ensure that Lake Cunningham Park is put on a pathway toward restoration.
Having represented the City of San José in the State Assembly and previously in the City Council for 15 years, I understand the importance of water quality in our lakes and parks.
Additionally, as someone who has consistently advocated for environmental protection in those years, I recognize the immediate need to remedy the issue of water contamination at Lake Cunningham Park.
Located in District 8, Lake Cunningham Park, which is home to a 50-acre lake, Raging Waters, and the Action Sports Park, has been positioned to serve as a tool for achieving environmental and social equity goals as the lake provides access to open space and active lifestyles for our San José community. Previously, the lake was also for recreational use for families. However, it has been closed for recreational use due to a detrimental decline in water quality.
The City has this opportunity to dedicate the remaining funds to water quality enhancement as promised to voters through Measure T. I appreciate the fact that the City Council recently approved keeping these critical savings for the water quality reserve.
Please support the recommendation from Councilmembers Candelas and Ortiz. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Ash Kalra
