Dear Agenda Desk,
Please do not take away the $3.2M in Measure T funds that was previously committed to improving water quality at a park located in a low-income community of color. The water in Lake Cunningham is so degraded that swimming and even boating are prohibited. Residents of the East Side deserve to have this inequity addressed, and this funding will help begin the path towards improved water quality.

This $3.2M is the last remnant of the $50M in Measure T funds dedicated to environmental protection. Please do not abandon your commitment to the voters by taking away this funding and using it for other projects.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Ariel Tiscareno

Please don’t move money from Measure T. Use it to remediate the algae.

Hi, my name is Marilynn Smith and my husband and I are longtime residents of East San Jose and an advocate for environmental justice. We were thrilled to have Lake Cunningham added to our neighborhood. But, the health of the lake is in jeopardy.

For far too long our communities' environmental issues have been put on the back burner and our representatives have faced constant pushback when bringing forward recommendations to make improvements to Lake Cunningham.

Since the mid-1990s, the water quality at Lake Cunningham has experienced a detrimental decline, which has compromised access to the lake, threatened the environment, and jeopardized the safety of park meadows and amenities during algae blooms or natural flooding on this historical floodplain.

It’s been years since the lake was available for recreational use.

This reality begs the question, if not now, then when? Your vote will show us how much you value environmental equity and justice for East San José.

I strongly urge the council to:

Accept the Candelas & Ortiz memo, and
Give voters what was promised in measure T, putting these funds towards preventing flooding and water quality contamination.

Thank you.

Marilynn Smith

Sincerely,
Rachel Castro

Dear Agenda Desk,
I grew up in east San José. Going to lake Cunningham was part of my youth. Grown and with children of my own now, i take them there for exercise and play time.  Please do not take away the $3.2M in Measure T funds that was previously committed to improving water quality at a park located in a low-income community of color. Dear Agenda Desk,
Please do not take away the $3.2M in Measure T funds that was previously committed to improving water quality at yet another local lake. The water in Lake Cunningham is so degraded that swimming and boating are prohibited. Residents of San Jose deserve to have recreational lakes, and this funding will help begin the path towards improved water quality. All of our lakes, rivers, and reservoirs are crap... Cunningham, Vasona, Lexington, Calero, Guadalupe, Almaden... I'm afraid I'd get cancer from swimming or boating or eating a fish from any one of them. Please make them all safe for humans again.

This $3.2M is the last remnant of the $50M in Measure T funds dedicated to environmental protection. Please do not abandon your commitment to the voters by taking away this funding and using it for other projects.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Loria Kutch
