Dear San Jose City Council
I am writing to you regarding an environmental equity issue. Do not shift funding that would allow the city to take a step toward improved water quality at Lake Cunningham. Further delaying any action would be a continued injustice.
I ask that you not shift the $3.2 million in funding previously designated for water quality improvement that would allow the City to begin a path to improved water quality at Lake Cunningham. This 50-acre open space is a vital resource for all San Jose residents. After years of deteriorating water quality and major fish die-offs, the lake was closed down, taking away open space and unmatched recreational activities for families and residents of all ages. Our families deserve more access to open space, not less. Our families deserve investments in water quality improvements. Our families deserve nearby access to recreational activities. Now is the time to begin working toward improved water quality, not time to shift these funds to potential construction projects or other potential uses.

Lake Cunningham needs to be cleaned up asap. It provides a stop over for migrating birds and being so close to Raging Waters means that many people visit the area. We need to avoid having an impending superfund site on a city lake.

A group of us walk the park in the morning with our dogs. It’s terrible the way the City has let the park go. If the park were in WG, this would not have happened.
Go visit the park and look at the condition.

Put some money back to open space for families….maybe instead of spending some of our tax dollars on homeless who don’t pay any taxes or have SJ best interest at heart you can spend some of our communities tax dollars back into make SJ what it used to be. Thanks for listening.

I'm very tired of voting for and then paying for taxes and then seeing them not being used for what I voted for.
Please do not move the 3.2 million menu for environmental improvements. It makes me not want to vote to adoptive any new taxes as I lose trust that my money will go to what it was intended.

Dear Agenda Desk,
Please do not take away the $3.2M in Measure T funds that was previously committed to improving water quality at a park located in a low-income community of color. The water in Lake Cunningham is so degraded that swimming and even boating are prohibited. Residents of the East Side deserve to have this inequity addressed, and this funding will help begin the path towards improved water quality.
This $3.2M is the last remnant of the $50M in Measure T funds dedicated to environmental protection. Please do not abandon your commitment to the voters by taking away this funding and using it for other projects.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Erika Ortiz

SJ City Council,
Regarding Lake Cunningham funding- my family and I enjoy this park and it is a shame that the water levels are this contaminated and the city refuses to invest in our community. The East side has limited resources for the families in our community. Please stop discriminating against this side of town. This issue of environmental equity should be addressed beginning with the previously allocated $3.2m funds.
Respectfully,
Paula Quintero

It is a big mistake and waste to not do what it takes to make the water of Lake Cunningham safe for human use.
This is great local resource which serves primarily the local area but also visitors from other areas. To have a water resource like Lake Cunningham right here amongst the residents, is a really valuable asset. Please do the right thing to ensure the water quality of Lake Cunningham is improved to allow valuable usage by people!

Lake Cunningham has been neglected by city hall and this needs to change. Residents want the park and the lake to receive priority and funding for improving water quality.

When I moved to San Jose 36 years ago I didn’t know anyone but joined a canoe club that paddle there. It gave me the opportunity to form friendships I cherish to this day. It is a community open space that we enjoy and need.
