Youth Commissioners provide valuable input and
insights on policies and programs directly
impacting young people by collaborating with
departments like the Library, PRNS, and the City
Manager's Office. These partnerships foster
inclusion by creating opportunities for young
people to participate in decision-making
processes and giving them a voice in shaping the
future of their communities.

Social media is a powerful tool the Youth Commission
uses to connect and outreach to their peers.

Platforms like Instagram allow young people to
express themselves in ways that were not possible
before and enable them to build communities
around their shared interests, concerns, and passions.

In October 2022, City Council directed the Youth
Commission and staff to explore expanding the age of
Youth Commission appointment eligibility and
expanding youth representation on city boards and
commissions. The Commission developed
recommendations to increase diverse and
underrepresented youth civic participation and provide
a seat at the table for young people to contribute to
decisions made on their behalf.

"Children and youth have a voice in their local
government to advocate for the issues that matter
to them."
This article recognizes the importance of engaging
young people in local government and decisionmaking processes. The Youth Commission can serve as a bridge between young people and local government
officials, helping to ensure that the voices of young
people are heard and considered in policy decisions.
