Airport Commission
What are the three most critical challenges facing Mineta San Jose International Airport in the next five
years?
What do you bring to the table in terms of experience, expertise, or perspective to help address these challenges
Growth, Budget, Safety.
In order to have a profitable airport, we need to continue to increase flights and bring in more airlines.
We need to create an environment where travelers want to fly out of SJC.
We need
to provide excellent service, accessible parking, top notch restaurants, easy entrance/exit routine with proper signage.
Question applies to
Airport Commission
What can the Airport do to balance its obligations as a “good neighbor” and as a world- class international
airport for Silicon Valley?
If there is a conflict in achieving an appropriate
balance, how would you resolve it?
To maintain a "good neighbor" status, we need to monitor the flow of traffic in the surrounding neighborhoods near the airport.
Flight patterns should be monitored for increased noise levels at certain parts of the day.
Work with the surrounding neighborhoods to create a team of citizens who are interested in being advisors/spokespersons for their area, and we all can work together to reach common goals.

My professional background in land use planning with the City of San Jose and in environmental planning and consulting in the private sector have provided much experience with development issues in and around San Jose Mineta International and Reid Hillview Airports over the years and I find these facilities and the issues surrounding them to be very interesting. In addition, I enjoy air travel and aviation in general.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
No previous experience.
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
In my position as a Director at MIG, I rely on constant and clear communication with others, from employees that I supervise, to my own supervisors, to clients and subconsultants. I believe that I am an effective communicator, and that would be a beneficial skill for a Commissioner. And, as a long-time resident of San Jose and someone who has been involved professionally in the planning and development of the City for over 30 years, I believe that I possess the background knowledge to fully understand airport-related issues.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Commission exists to review, analyze and provide advice and guidance to the City Council regarding issues affecting the City's two airport facilities, and related to commercial and general aviation in the San Jose area. They are an advisory board to the Council to help facilitate the Council's decision-making process regarding these issues.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Police Department staffing Homeless encampments along the Guadalupe River and Coyote Creek Street repairs - improving road surface conditions
Question applies to
Airport Commission
What are the three most critical challenges facing Mineta San Jose International Airport in the next five
years?
What do you bring to the table in terms of experience, expertise, or perspective to help address these challenges
1. Appropriate uses of the airport approach zone, south of the airport. I would like to see if there are ways to work with FAA restrictions to allow the restoration of existing recreational facilities (Columbus Park) or construction of new facilities to address the City's shortage of playing fields and parks. 2. Attracting and maintaining commercial airlines' use of the airport as a destination or hub. 3. Maintaining passenger satisfaction in the face of competition with SFO and OAK for ease of use, parking, concessions, security screening, etc.

Question applies to
Airport Commission
What can the Airport do to balance its obligations as a “good neighbor” and as a world- class international
airport for Silicon Valley?
If there is a conflict in achieving an appropriate
balance, how would you resolve it?
I think consistent enforcement of policies such as the nighttime curfew is important, as far as maintaining it's "good neighbor" status. To balance that with the demands of a world-class international airport would require careful scheduling of flights and examination of potential changes to the policies that would strike more of a balance between the needs of the neighboring community and the business community.
Stakeholder engagement, including community residents as well as business and political leaders in developing these changes is critical.
Question applies to
Airport Commission
What can the City of San José and the Airport do to engage Silicon Valley business leaders and other
communities to support the Airport’s efforts to increase air service and add routes to SJC? What can you do
personally to help achieve this goal?
The City should consider the Airport one of the top of the priorities when engaging in branding and public relations campaigns. Outreach to the business community should include promotion of the Airport's convenient location, easy accessibility, and wide range of available national and international flights and schedules.

I graduated from Cupertino High School in 1984. i graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Fransisco in 1986. I attended SJSU and took some business courses yet did not graduate. I became an HR manger and stayed busy in that career for over 25 years. During this time I took many HR courses and HR Law courses. I had to stay current with laws and policies so classes and certifications were ongoing. I started my own consulting company, Adamski Consulting, which allowed me the flexibility to set my own hours while raising my two children. I worked with such companies as Apple Computer, Philips Electronics, National Semiconductor, Idexx Laboratories, Logitech, Hewlett Packard, and Amazon. During the last 10 years of my HR career I was studying and practicing Shamanism. I slowly transitioned out of Corporate America, and into my spiritual and creative arena. In my current practice I guide people as they step into their spiritual selves, I heal with energy and vibration, I help them reconnect with their true self, and more. You can learn more at my website: ShamaMama.com. I teach people to Walk In Beauty. I also teach meditative art one on one or to large groups. I lead sound baths for county employees every week. I lead community drumming circles. And, I have had the pleasure of painting a couple of ArtBoxes in my neighborhood...so fun! In 2019 I was honored to receive a Star 9 Award from Mayer Sam Liccardo and Council Person Pam Foley. Such an honor! List any position or office held in any governmental agency, civic, or charitable organization including the dates.
I was a scout leader from 1998 - 2014.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
I would like to be involved with bringing more joy and beauty to our community trough the arts. There are so many opportunities to bring sparks of inspiration and happiness to city by being open to an abundance of artistic expression. Everyone is an artist and our community is our canvas. I hope to work with others to implement ideas and inspire creativity within residents. I want to make smiles bloom on peoples faces as they drive/walk/bike through town. A little bit of art goes a long way to making someones day. And I would like to create MOMENTUM within the community to bring in more art in countless ways. Often, when someone finds joy in a piece of beauty they have seen or heard during their day, they are often motivated to want to share with others, then a fabulous momentum starts.

I have served on various boards since 2003, serving in capacities from members of the board of directors to committee chair. The boards that I served on as a student include Student Union, Incorporated and Associated Students, Incorporated while at SJSU, and on the board of community organizations such as United Vietnamese Student Associations and the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations as an alumnus. Currently, I serve on two boards: Vietnamese American Roundtable, Inc. and the Union of North American Vietnamese Student Associations. I am also a current member of the Housing and Community Development Commission and have served as a member of the Charter Review Commission.
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
In my service on the Housing Commission and the Charter Review Commission, I have learned a lot about the structure of San Jose's government. On the Housing Commission, I developed an intimate understanding of the rules and regulations that apply to new developments, such as the Ellis Act and the Inclusionary Housing Ordinance. I also led the effort to recommend to the City Council that we enact the Commercial Linkage Fee and to study residential vacancies in San Jose. On the Charter Review Commission, I led the subcommittee that recommended the adoption of ranked choice voting and the expansion of the number of districts in San Jose. The Commission itself also studied and recommended against changing to charter to adopt the Mayor-Council model.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Housing Commission plays an advisory role to the City Council on matters related to housing policy such as the MHO, ARO, TPO, and more. We also serve as entity that can hold public hearings for the grants that require the City to do so.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
The Commission's top priority should be generating ideas to increase the housing supply for the LI, VLI, and ELI population. Second, the City should prioritize the assessment of how additional housing will affect the ability of the City to continue its current level of services, such as garbage and law enforcement. Third, the City should work with its communities, developers, and other stakeholders to develop a plan to boost the housing supply while matching any growth in the need for services or resources for the additional residents who move in to San Jose.

How would you use your experience with homelessness to inform your work on the Commission?
My experience with homelessness is a big part of who I am because I was pulled out of it through the kindness of others. I am reminded to pay it forward and ensure that we address homelessness in a way that is dignified and effective. I carry those values towards all of the policy matters that we review and discuss as well.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
The Library and Education Commission's mission states that it advocates for high-quality, impactful, and innovative library and education services that serve as a foundation for the city of San Jose. Over the last 4-5 years, I have dedicated myself and my work to supporting the next generation of learners. I have taught in classrooms, coached, collaborated, and managed individuals, all striving to support our students and their families to get the education and resources they deserve and hope for. During this time, I have learned that education does not stop in the classroom. It goes beyond that; it is about access and knowledge, and now my goal is to dive deeper into the strategic workings of educational access, advocacy, and planning. The work that this commission is doing is meant to support a vision of equity and quality access for youth and their family. I would love to work towards supporting students with college and career readiness, equity and inclusion, and policy and governance within education and digital literacy.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
I have served on two separate advisory boards with my previous organization, City Year. During that time, I supported the strategic development and oversight of learning opportunities that would foster a culture of DBIE and anti-racism in society, primarily focusing on education for staff members.
I also supported the
Mental Health & Well-Being council, where I collaborated with individuals to make recommendations and strategies that supported positive mental, social, emotional, and psychological well-being for employees across 29 sites in the US.
Both positions have allowed me to support in evaluating current plans or policies, realigning programs and strategic planning, and making recommendations to necessary parties.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
I have spent the past seven years working in the nonprofit sector; the last four years have been spent in San Jose working with educational nonprofits to promote educational equity and access for youth and young adults.
As a former education nonprofit director, board member, and after-school provider, I believe I can make sound judgments for recommendations that support education, programs, services, and developments for the San Jose community. I have a direct and personal understanding of the role and importance of education and library service in SJ. I understand that change does not come quickly but does not come without hard work and dedication. I aim to be a part of a group striving toward equitable change.
As a program director, I oversaw the implementation of educational programs in school and after- school for elementary and middle schools. I have collaborated with school districts, third-party educational providers, and teachers and personally worked alongside students and their families. I have been a program manager for after-school STEAM programs, I have coached and trained young adults on new and innovative approaches to education, and I once taught 5th-grade students as an AmeriCorps member.
In addition to the work I have done in education, I have served on boards that have allowed me to develop the skills necessary to make evaluations and recommendations that influence policy or change.
I pride myself on my ability to plan strategically and think critically before making decisions that impact the lives of others from a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
I believe I can leverage my past professional
experience and my learning from undergrad and graduate school as a tool for this commission to inform and make sound recommendations alongside other individuals.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The commission's purpose is to evaluate and make recommendations, share advice, and submit reports regarding libraries (programs, ops, funding, etc.) and educational programs to the City Council and the San Jose Public Library. They act as and hold public forums to discuss needs and then collectively communicate recommendations to the City Council and the San Jose Public Library.

As a mother of 11 year old twins, and as a volunteer in both of their classrooms, I was able to see firsthand what an impact reading had not only on academic achievement, but for student confidence, as well.
Our libraries are a wonderful resource for our children and community, and.I would work to like to see more structured programs to encourage and engage younger readers, as well as English learners.
Additionally, I have experienced first hand how our local libraries have become more of a daycare rather than a valuable resource for learning and studying.
I don't have the answers or parameters of what could
to be done about this, but my goal is learn as much as I can to bring the libraries into a place of peaceful, cooperative learning and resources.

mother of two 11 year olds and have first hand experience with the libraries' areas of excellence, as well as ideas on how to improve.
I am a fair team player, I like to collaborate, and learn about different points of view.
I am inclusive and a natural leader.

Question applies to
Library and Education Commission
What involvement have you had in library and/or early education issues? I was a pre-school teacher years and years ago, but I have worked with children as young as 2 months from the time I was 9 years old. I have 2 children of my own, and have become well-versed in childhood learning, challenges and programs that can be effective to promote engagement, confidence and success.
Last, I am very passionate about how children learn, and based on my Learning Sciences Masters, I have studied the best ways to children to learn, as well as hiccups along the way (developmental and emotional).

Library and Education Commission
Would you be willing to attend local special events/meetings as a representative of the Library and Early Education Commission?
Yes, of course.
Anything else you would like us to know?
I would like to be on the Committee because I want to make a difference - not just for my own children, but or all constituents in the district.
I have always been a "do-er", and challenge my own children to solve problems, not complain about them. In taking my own advice, this is a great way to get involved and see what the future holds as far as additional roles I may want to take in the future.

What involvement have you had in library and/or early education issues? I have always utilized the many services our public library system offers. As a college student, the public library was my second home. As a professional, the library has always been a great resource to have for myself and my clients. My degree in Social Work included the study of the different stages of life, including the first years. I took child development courses and sociology courses in college and worked and volunteered with elementary school aged children. I support and take advantage of many First 5 Programs where I have been able to continue my education taking courses including the Positive Parenting Program, Opening Doors, and many other workshops.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
All of my progressive work in academic libraries over the last fifteen years leads me to apply for this San Jose Commission today. This board is of interest to me because it reflects my interests in libraries and education as important community actors, offering services that can enhance inclusion and lifelong learning for all the members of our San Jose community in a time when the socioeconomic divide continues to widen here. I'm interested in helping position our libraries as responsive community assets focused on user needs; the assessment practitioner side of myself is also very drawn to using evidence -- and disaggregating it to better understand sub-groups -- to support innovation and decision making. More specifically, I would like to help support SJPL's efforts to develop response user programs and services, to reduce barriers to access and create inclusive safe spaces, and to help SJPL's overall organizational health with respect to staffing etc.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
I have experience serving on Committees within the Santa Clara University (SCU) community, as well as prior college employers (Marymount California University, University of California Irvine). For example, I currently service on the University Assessment Committee and the Core Writing Committee. These groups have a cross-campus composition and are tasked with leadership in those areas. Within the SCU Library, I serve on the Library Management Committee and support strategic planning creation, implementation, and tracking; resource management; administrative issues and projects; and support the DEI efforts across the Library.

11 years employed as an academic librarian in progressively more responsible roles; now serving on the library management council of Santa Clara University Library.
My focus has been on public services
(instruction, outreach, reference, programs) but I also have supported access services work and collection development.
7 years as an assessment practitioner: help create systems for gathering data and qualitative input, then using that evidence for informing decision making. In recent years I have particularly advocated as assessment as a tool for inclusion when it is designed appropriately and we disaggregate the data to focus on sub-groups.
17 year commitment to developing libraries in communities at-need locally and internationally (Guatemala, Angola, Costa Rica) What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? My understanding of the Commission is that we are to represent community voice in providing feedback, input, and perspective on specific initiatives and priorities of SJPL. It is an advisory body, making recommendations but it is not the final decision-making body.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Assuming this question means three issues of relevance to the Library and Education Commission, I believe these general issues are of relevance:
1. Recruiting and retaining a diverse library staff and providing opportunities for professional recognition and growth 2. Supporting digital literacy and citizenship across the lifespan, most specifically targeting children, youth and seniors 3. Supporting a sense of local neighborhood community through outreach (outward) and face-to-face programming/services (inward) 4. Developing mechanisms to solicit feedback from all user groups (of all ethnicities and neighborhoods) and ideally non- or low-users to continue to develop responsive programs and services

I participate in a list serve that covers many areas in San Jose.
I review the messages and have
participated in some of the discussions.
I get frustrated by a lot of the complaining and the lack of discussion about solutions.
So I started to really think about my responsibilities as a citizen of the City and began looking for meetings I could attend.
I have always felt passionate about issues of housing and homelessness.
When I found an open position on the Housing and Development Commission it gave me hope that I could actually make a valuable contribution to the City and to my neighbors and make my city better.
I moved from southern California to the Bay Area because I wanted to raise my children in a smaller big city.
I watched traffic in Los Angeles go from reasonable to unbearable, I watched the homeless wander around Venice Beach and down town L.A. and I watched large open spaces and trees bulldozed in order to build toll roads for wealthy neighborhoods.
In the Bay Area we are now experiencing
tremendous growth and live in an area of fabulous innovation.
We need to be innovative in how the growth
is addressed so the needs of all of the area's constituents' needs are met.

As a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, how would you handle a situation where you have a volatile
Community group which is opposed to a staff proposal?
This is an incomplete hypothetical and does not describe the environment.
How volatile?
Are the armed?
Are they just angry and want to be heard?
I would try to listen to them and respond in a way that allows them to know that I have actually heard what they had to say.
I would try to understand just exactly what
they object to and if that issue has already been addressed by the staff I would try to discuss that issue so that there was understanding.
If I could not get agreement, the meeting would eventually end with everyone having an opportunity to be heard and a decision being made even if not everyone is happy with that decision.
That is life.
If there was an armed angry threatening community mob, then I might have a different response.

Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
As a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, how would you handle a situation where you have a volatile
Community group which is opposed to a staff proposal?
The first and most important thing to do is listen to the constituents concerns and acknowledge their concerns. Never make any promises and let the group participate in giving recommendations that the board may consider for future agenda items. It maybe an item that needs to be revisited before a ultimate decision is made.
Question applies to

We held numerous meeting with the public to get their buy in and involvement of this future Facility and needed the approval from the budget office to move forward on this awesome project. Fast forward to current an we have one of the best Bike parks in the State of California!!!

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
I enjoyed my time serving on bond oversight committees for the Evergreen Elementary School District. It was a pleasure to work with local district employees, discussing with them their work and seeing the bond money put into action in our community. I think that my experiences running organizations and my company have honed my skills to find win-win solutions.
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
I have had a broad scope of experience leading in the worlds of education, the private sector, and the nonprofit world. Union representative during a contract negotiation year for the certificated teachers at Santee Elementary School. I have been a small business owner since 2006. I employ ten staff members currently. I’ve worked as a staff member or consultant at over a dozen public and private schools. I taught or volunteered in preschools, elementary, junior high, high school, and masters degree classrooms. I enjoy public speaking. Extensive community service experiences. Trained in interpersonal communication and managing conflict. I appreciate the importance of how to validate others’ perspectives to arrive at a compromised solution while serving on school boards and committees.
I've been a committee member, a
teacher, a president, a counselor. I know how to listen and participate, and I know how to set forth a vision and lead. I enjoy being active and getting things done. I enjoy meeting new people and cheering them on.
I am proud to have lived in San Jose for most of my life.
I am a parent and friend to many. I enjoy
connecting with others with different lived experiences and points of view, and am eager to bring these skills and others to this position.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The commission oversees the management of the parks and recreation programs and locations in San Jose.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
1. Increased funding for parks and recreation 2. Repair of facilities 3. Increased summer programming for youth
Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
Please describe your experience in working with governmental agencies.
I volunteered with the Evergreen School District Bond Oversight committees.
Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
As a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, how would you handle a situation where you have a volatile
Community group which is opposed to a staff proposal?
In the course I teach on "Legal and Ethical Issues" at Santa Clara University to graduate students, I show a clip of Ted Lasso playing darts that culminates in Ted talking about how being curious is much more important than being judgmental. I would like to think that my training as a marriage and family therapists, where I regularly help couples deal with high levels of conflict, would translate well to working with citizens in varying degrees of agreement to staff proposals. For me, reflective listening comes first and foremost -- letting people know that they have been heard. Modeling and teaching turn taking works with couples, and may or may not work with larger meetings at times. In the end, safety is most important, and our nation is seeing far too often citizens behaving badly; I can imagine situations when leaving a meeting to end a discussion could be most important.
Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
Can you provide examples of major public policy issues that you have been involved in and what your role was in the issue?
My career has focused on major personal decisions (to divorce or not, how to manage anger, how to deal with anxiety) rather than public policy. I would like to learn more about this and contribute.

I believe that I am best suited to "dig deep" into Senior concerns in the district I live in. Nearing 65 I see that there are many concerns facing my age group. Folks are so busy just trying to survive that seniors not only get neglected but pushed out of the community they helped build. I am concerned with Senior housing, transportation, food security, Medicare, employment, and over all quality of life. We can do better. I am concerned that the community has lost its ability to respect, engage with, and create space for seniors. Transitioning into various phases of one's life does not come with a handbook, though there are many books on the subject of aging. I don’t have all the answers, but I have years of advocating on challenging topics, and the will to put my experience together with others to make things better for seniors — ultimately, for the entire community.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
If you had asked middle school me what civic engagement was, I wouldn't have been able to confidently answer you. But my transition from a girl who didn't even understand how elections worked to the activist and artist I am today has shown me why it's so important to provide opportunities for youth to simultaneously civically engage and engage in their passions. As a member of the Youth Commission, I'd work to empower youth to civically engage in what I believe is the best way to create tangible, sustainable change in a community: policy change. I am heavily interested in implementing a Youth Participatory Budgeting program within the San Jose area, which would directly source project ideas from youth and serve as a critical path to future civic engagement while also improving the community based on youth ideas--I would focus on uplifting actual youth concerns so that the City can address the issues that youth are actually facing; I'll write more on this later. Furthermore, I would work with my fellow commissioners to establish committees to address what we believe are the most pressing issues for youth. I personally would advocate for policies and initiatives that support alleviating youth homelessness, improving education policy, and strengthening mental health programs at schools. Supplemented by my experience at GENup (a grassroots organization of high schoolers and college students that works with CA legislators to write, lobby for, and co-sponsor student-focused bills), some of my ideas addressing these issues include pushing for a guaranteed income program for seniors (similar to SB333 Cortese in Congress right now), youth events like forums and fundraisers, investing in mental health support for schools, and nurturing youth-focused art and humanities programs or events. All in all, I want to be a member of this Commission because it would allow me to change things I wish had been different when I was younger and because youth voice is crucial to government action--it is our future. The SJYC would provide essential experience for my personal skill develop and career goals and also allow me to advocate for the youth community, which is often underrepresented, wrongly represented, or utterly nonexistent.

Supplemental Questions
Question applies to Youth Commission
Please list your community involvement, including jobs and volunteer work.
Current community involvement: Asides from my work at GENup (detailed below and in my resume), I work with my organization Learn4Justice (a student-led organization focused on equipping underserved students with skills to be global justice advocates, whether that's speech & debate, journalism, or writing) to bring systemic justice-focused workshop programs to local elementary schools and am currently planning summer camps at the local and international level. Past community involvement: I've worked with SJPL to implement an extensive, social justice-centered speech and debate program that taught 100+ elementary schoolers in the past, collaborating with librarians and volunteers from other schools to research and develop curriculum. The program was recently recognized by the American Library Association and is titled Speech & Debate: Global Citizenship. In terms of internships or summer programs with the community, I interned underneath former Councilmember Raul Peralez and completed a lot of graphic design work, tabling, policy recaps and more. Last summer, I was also involved the Vietnamese American Roundtable's SEEDS program, receiving a monetary scholarship and planning a community cultural showcase from youth to adults in the community after a multiple-month educational program.
Question applies to Youth Commission
In one paragraph, please explain your community interests.
I'm intent on bolstering civic engagement and increasing youth access to success, whether that's mental health resources, awareness about social justice issues, or access to housing and help. I'm interested in going beyond the virtual and social media campaigns, and I'd like to suggest and work towards Youth Commission with a heavier focus on policy. I'll take this area to talk a little bit more about a Youth Participatory Budgeting program: although I fully understand that such an endeavor would take a lot of dedication and cross-department coordination, I am confident that this is a worthy project the SJYC should either advocate for or lead (Boston's Youth Lead the Change program, which I've been communicating with, is an excellent example of a successful youth participatory budgeting program). My work with former CM Peralez's 5-year participatory budgeting program and my research on the matter has emphasized the huge benefits of these programs--including but not limited to increased civic engagement, youth trust in government, and youth wellbeing. My work with GENup and Learn4Justice have all centered around uplifting youth with the proper skills to succeed in every aspect of their lives, and I'd plan to carry on that torch as a Youth Commissioner.

Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel are some of the problems facing the youth of San Jose? I'll split my answer into four parts to make things simpler. First, as I've already mentioned, I think youth lack entry-level ways to civically engage in their communities, creating adults who are reluctant or unable to civically engage. Even as a high school freshman, I was afraid to go to town halls and other potentially helpful events because they were either physically hard to access or simply too daunting. So, aside from my push for youth participatory budgeting, I'd want to consider implementing events that allow youth to engage in their interests while also contributing to a cause--I've seen great citywide talent shows focused on raising money for a cause. I'd also want to make a pointed effort to recruit other youth organizations and individuals to participate in meetings.
Second, mental health and the lack of proper treatment in schools continues to be an issue in San Jose's education system and general society. As an SJYC member, I'd push for more access, more workshops for the younger youth population, and less punitive school environments; on that last point, I also believe that youth are more harmed than helped by police presence in schools. My work with Learn4Justice also aligns well with workshop awareness efforts.
Third,
I believe that youth of color face roadblocks to having their identities and histories recognized by schools and greater society. I think this can be addressed through out-of-school education initiatives, working with school district management to encourage greater emphasis on cultural and ethnic identity on the non-high school level, and city events that promote student diversity (whether that's a summit or an art competition).
Last but certainly not least, I am disturbed by the fact that San Jose has the highest rate of student homelessness in the United States (85 young adults out of every 100,000 residents are homeless in SJ). I think we can counter this partially by increasing resources in schools and online for youth who may be experiencing homelessness. Additionally, we can consider working on programs like guaranteed income programs for homeless youth (see SB 333 again), which would help youth transition from high school to college and sustainably decrease the chance of homelessness by pulling out one of its root causes (inability to find education and work); successful programs have been implemented in various California areas including Stockton.
Question applies to
Youth Commission
What do you feel the priorities of the Youth Commission should be? I think the Youth Commission should engage both in policy recommendation and bolstering the youth community through events and campaigns but focus more heavily on the latter in the coming years. As a youth body that works closely or even directly with the local government, the SJYC's power to influence policy recommendations should not be disregarded. Thus, I feel that the Youth Commission should focus on gathering youth opinions on pertinent issues through forums, surveys, workshops, and more, then
highlight those in concentrated policy efforts. Of course, I believe the SJYC also should engage in educational initiatives and campaigns about student-relevant issues ranging from mental health to homelessness in schools or online.
If applicable, have you ever attended or watched a meeting of the Commission(s) to which you are applying?

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
I've been a part of various leadership groups, but two I want to highlight are my experiences with GENup and Associated Student Body (ASB) at my school. As GENup's Director of Communications, I collaborate with other GENup departments, community partners ranging from universities like SJSU, and my team to write press releases and op-eds centered around student-centered education policy. We also occasionally write the bill language for the state Senate. Meanwhile, as class Vice President for the past few years, I've worked with my classmates and peers to represent student concerns, organize fundraisers, carry out school administration plans, and lead events.
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social,
Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
I believe my leadership experience in various social justice organizations, from Learn4Justice to GENup, qualify me for experience; I'm working with partners at the local, national, and international level to carry out campaigns and global education initiatives. Additionally, my extensive experience in Speech & Debate has provided me with the necessary critical thinking, writing, and public speaking skills that are essential to a role in the SJYC. I also think my love for creativity and my flexibility make me a good candidate for appointment. I'm passionate about identifying problems and finding effective, collaborative ways to solve them.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? I understand that the purpose of the commission is to work together to better the lives of youth around the community. It does this with a focus on equity, education, and policy recommendations to the City Council.
The SJYC is not simply focused on elevating youth voices, it also focuses on growing and including those voices in the conversation.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Homelessness (Affordable Housing), Youth Civic Engagement, Youth Mental Health.
