RE: Environmental Stewardship Program
Honorable Mayor and City Council,
As Superintendent of the East Side Union High School District (ESUHSD) I am writing to express our support for the Environmental Stewardship Program (Program) funded by the Environmental Protection Agency's Water Quality Improvement Fund.

We are enthusiastic about this opportunity to collaborate with the City, Valley Water, and local organizations to provide opportunities for our students and community. The grant gives students and residents the opportunity to learn about and explore their local waterways while fostering a sense of environmental stewardship, providing career development skills for the students, and preparing the community for climate-related impacts such as flooding and drought.

We all recognize the challenge of combating climate change, especially for underserved communities near the waterways. With this grant, students and residents will be engaged in learning about their local watershed and environmental impacts. Through coordination with the City, Valley Water, and ESUHUD, this historically underserved community will be provided with a multitude of opportunities and lead to a more informed and engaged community.

ESUHSD looks forward to supporting the program by collaborating with the City of San José and partner organizations to educate the students and engage residents. We believe this program has the potential to produce sustainable and replicable programs throughout the City of San José, specifically in underserved communities. Facilitating positive behavior change while educating and empowering students and residents benefits our community, especially our underserved communities, the health of the watersheds, the City, and ultimately the San Francisco Bay.

Sincerely,
Glenn Vander Zee
