SUBJECT: REQUEST TO TRAVEL DATE: July 25, 2023
APPROVED Date: 05/23/2023
Recommendation: Authorize travel, accept travel payments to the City of San Jose, and designate Mayor’s Staff, Michael Lomio, as the City representative to attend the Reimagining the Civic Commons event in Lexington, Kentucky from October 24-26, 2023.

Location: Lexington, Kentucky
Meeting Dates: October 24-26, 2023
Source of Funds: The Guadalupe River Park Conservancy and The Knight Foundation, 501c3 nonprofits (airfare, lodging, meals, ground transportation) Purpose: Reimagining the Civic Commons (RCC), a nationwide learning network, includes San Jose as one of its member cities. RCC brings together stewards, operators, funders, and supporters of parks, public spaces, and civic institutions to exchange knowledge, acquire access to resources, and create a movement for place-based community improvement. To highlight the contributions of a particular city, RCC organizes several Studios and Learning Journeys each year. Here is a link to their Medium website, which highlights the contributions made by the many network cities throughout the nation.

Michael Lomio is the Sr. Land Use and Economic Development Policy Advisor on the Mayor’s Team and focuses on Downtown Vibrancy and Urban Revitalization. He will speak with other community leaders at RCC about the value and unlocked potential the Guadalupe River Park holds for the City of San Jose. For Downtown San Jose to further blossom, we must fully reinvest our efforts into the Guadalupe River Park. Michael Lomio works alongside various stakeholders to help drive future investment and enhancement of downtown San José’s signature public space: the Guadalupe River Park.
