Dear Mayor and City Councilmembers:
We are excited to present to you our plan for a new 120-room Fairfield Inn & Suites at 1669 Monterey Road. The project conforms to City policies and advances the City goal to clean up and beautify the Monterey Corridor, thus the Planning Staff, the unanimous Planning Commission, and Councilmember Doan all recommend approval of the project. Memorandum from Doan, 8/2/2023
Below are the key features of the project that we hope you will consider:
1) Clean Up and Beautify the Monterey Corridor - Gateway to Downtown: Although the overall Monterey Corridor area will remain as an important industrial zone, City policy has long envisioned investment in new commercial uses along the frontages of the Monterey Highway to improve the appearance of the street and to generate tax revenue and jobs. A brand new 5-story building with stone siding and landscaping at the street level will vastly improve the appearance of the site compared to the existing unattractive and underutilized Casa Linda Motel site. (Please see before and after images below.) 2) Support Restaurant and Retail Businesses on the Monterey Corridor: A larger and new Marriott brand hotel will bring more guests into the area, who will then support restaurants and retailers in the area. 3) New Hotel Will Support Redevelopment of the County Fairgrounds: The Fair Management Association has proposed a number of potential new amenities at the County Fairgrounds, including a multi-field soccer complex and a cricket stadium. Visitors and participants at these new facilities will benefit from having high quality lodging nearby. The site is also near the San Jose State South Campus sports facilities. Fans and participants in college sporting events can also stay at this convenient location. 4) Promoting San Jose Staycation Experience: The owner has the goal of marketing to families in the region who want a staycation experience, by including resort-like amenities, such as an outdoor swimming pool, a bocce court, and a rooftop lounge, which you can see in the project floor plans.
For all of the reasons above, we hope that you find the project worthy of your support.
Thank you for your consideration. Please email or call if you have questions.
Best Regards,
ERIK
