Dear City Council members,
Everyone in our family has worked or attended school in downtown San Jose, and largely relied on bicycle, bus, and walking. The city has done some impressive work in increasing the number of bicycle lanes, making the streets safer, and beginning to help us envision a more human-oriented downtown, with fewer motor vehicles and more alternatives for transportation. The Viva Calle events are always highlights for us, as we can safely explore neighborhoods, discover businesses we weren't familiar with, and find new bike lanes.

Perhaps most importantly, it allows the broader community to experience a fun, safe outdoor activity together. These events are crucial for our communities to imagine our urban environment taking a shape that serves us better, not and for the future.

Please do not cut the funding for Viva Calle; I encourage you to expand it! Sincerely,
Ed Maurer

I love VivaCalle! Please do not cut funding...DO NOT CUT FUNDING to Viva Calle. VivaCalle is more than just a street closure; it's a celebration of our community's vitality, diversity, and shared spirit. Here are some of the remarkable benefits it brings to our city: 1.

Promoting Active Lifestyles: VivaCalle encourages physical activity and healthy living. Closing streets to cars opens them up for pedestrians, cyclists, and skaters, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the outdoors. 2. Fostering Social Connections: Our community thrives when people come together. VivaCalle provides a unique opportunity for residents to connect, engage in conversations, and build meaningful relationships with their neighbors. 3. Showcasing Local Culture: It's a platform for showcasing the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our city. From food vendors to live performances, VivaCalle celebrates our diverse heritage and the arts. 4. Boosting Local Economy: Local businesses benefit from increased foot traffic during VivaCalle events. It's a chance for our neighborhood shops and eateries to shine and for residents to discover new favorites. 5. Inspiring Environmental Awareness: By temporarily reducing car traffic, VivaCalle promotes eco-friendly transportation options and raises awareness about reducing our carbon footprint. 6. Strengthening Community Bonds: Events like VivaCalle strengthen our sense of community. When we come together to enjoy our city's public spaces, we reinforce our commitment to creating a more vibrant and connected community. 7. Creating Lasting Memories: For families, individuals, and friends, VivaCalle is an opportunity to create lasting memories. It's a day filled with laughter, exploration, and a shared appreciation for our city's beauty. 8. Supporting Health and Well-being: The open streets and recreational activities promote mental and emotional well-being. Taking a break from our busy lives to enjoy VivaCalle can be incredibly rejuvenating.

My husband and I attended Viva Calle yesterday for the first time, and enjoyed it tremendously. Please keep funding this event! Thank you,
Susan Boyd

Hello,
I am writing to express support for continuing funding for VivaCalle.

Events like this that encourage people to get out of their cars and explore their community on bike or foot and helps foster trust and respect among neighbors. I have discovered many local businesses during VivaCalle events and continue to patronize them today. Additionally, these events encourage less dependency on cars and encourage people to bike or walk to work and shopping.

Thank you,
Jon Freilich

Dear City Council,
Thank you for having previously approved park funding for the current fiscal year. Our community needs parks and urban green space, both of which are a basic need that promote physical and mental health. Many parks still require repair and maintenance and staff are needed for either to occur. Thank you in advance for not reducing park funding this fiscal year. Now is the time to protect our essential parks and public services like Viva Calle and Viva Parks.

Our family loves to attend Viva Calle San Jose - we attend rain or shine - for our younger members the only days they feel safe riding a bicycle on the street ... which is sad as we have a city with weather that is very cycle friendly and is mostly flat. Every morning I have to drive my car 1 mile to bring my kids to school safely, and then myself ride a bicycle as commute/exercise to work, 7 miles on the Guadalupe River Trail.

Especially since the pandemic, our parks - as example the lovely Guadalupe River Park and Gardens -have turned into homeless encampments even with cars that park in the park along the trails. Where is the enforcement ? If anything we need more, not less, PRNS staff and rangers!! Please do not cut these essential services to our quality of life.

My girlfriend and I are in our late 60s and we have participated in every Viva Calle. The event has grown every time, in both number of people and in diversity of age, ethnicity, families, etc. Local merchants have also greatly benefited by the riders finally getting to see local businesses up close while they ride safely on closed streets, and then coming back to dine/shop and also tell their friends.

The City of San Jose also greatly benefits from the civic pride generated by Viva Calle, showing that San Jose is a world leader in sustainable and healthy cities. We need more Viva Calles! Brien Kirk

I really hope there are more Viva Calle events - it's great for my daughter and I to get out together and explore more of our neighborhood/city. There are places we never would have thought to go to, but a Viva Calle day inspired us to check them out (and spend some money in the local economy!) India R Meisner

1. VivaCalle is one of the best events in the city. Every time it comes around my family and I attend. This particular event supports the bike community, local business's, and San Jose as a whole. Taking this away hurts everyone.

2. Please do not to approve cuts to Parks Recreation and Neighborhood Services Placemaking activities, including Viva Parks and Viva Calle. Losing. It would be a travesty to lose these.

3. I'm positive the council to find an alternative source of funding cuts to achieve their budget reallocation goals that don't make it harder for everyone to safely enjoy the outdoors. As supporters of Vision Zero and safe streets, we know that VivaCalle centers the safety of its residents above all else and encourages us all to envision our streets as spaces that are not just safe but enjoyable.

this is a wonderful way to get people outside. Promotes healthy activities. And gets hesitant bike riders to learn the city, feel more confident, and start making better choices for commutes. Every one of these this summer has been packed. people want to participate.

Events such as Viva Calle and Viva Parks help remind us all what urban life in a walkable, bikeable community can look like, and even though I wan't able to participate in Viva Calle this year, I look forward to doing so next time.

Once again, thank you in advance maintaining park funding this fiscal year.

As my son, age 13 and Viva Calle volunteer says, "as soon as the event starts all the good vibes come out." At yesterday's event I saw people and bikes of all ages and all were smiling and enjoying each other and their city.

Dear SAN JOSE City Council:

Please find a way to keep funding the Viva Calle open streets day at least 2 times per year. This is one of the best community events every year that really does bring a large and very diverse city together on their bikes, skateboards, roller blades and feet! I have participated in the Viva Calle SJ for years with our entire family. We look forward to it every year! Please do not let this wonderful event go away for lack of funding.

Thank you

I'm setting out now with my parents, who are in their late seventies, to explore the course and festivals. Let's keep allowing families to enjoy this special time to move outdoors! Thank you,

My family attended Viva Calle today for the first time and were impressed with what a great community event this is. People from all over our city came together in a very friendly and neighborly way that broke down barriers and connected people. There are few activities like this and more needed, please continue to fund and support this as it. It's important part of the fabric of our city and makes us different.

Viva Calle is an important and relatively low-cost way to give San Jose some of the identity it so desperately needs. San Jose has a thriving bicycle culture and this event is one of the reasons why. Events where the people of San Jose get out and explore parts of the city they may not frequent is a great way to provide exposure for new businesses and city facilities.

I have been attending Viva Calle since its inception. It has been amazing every year.

It would be a tremendous loss for our community to lose this institution.

It provides many business along the route with a customer boot, teaches families that biking can be a real transportation alternative. It also is a great venue for families to interact with the police in a friendly manner and for the police to meet members of the community outside of enforcing laws and regulations.

I hope you consider the value of this event and keep funding it.

I urge the City Council to prioritize maintaining and even increasing funding for our parks and community spaces.

These areas play a vital role in enhancing our quality of life and fostering a sense of unity among residents. As a proud San Jose resident, I fully support initiatives that promote a healthier and happier community. Let's invest in our parks, which serve as the heart of our neighborhoods.

Please find another way to balance your budget besides cutting funding for something like Viva Calle that encourages families to get outside and enjoy San Jose together in a safe environment. Just got back from Viva Calle with my 4 yr old and 2 yr old grandkids. They rode their bike and strider and their parents and grandparents were joining them... showing them how much fun biking is and being outside. Please DO NOT cut funding for this great event. Maybe only do 1 event a year instead of multiple or maybe shorten the distance of roadways that is closed?????

Mr. Mayor, Hands off Viva Calle. San Jose needs this event. Viva Calle has only gotten better and it brings families and friends together in a fun a safe environment for everyone to enjoy. Find the funds to secure Viva Calle or maybe borrow some funds for your wife's private school. Stop blaming the recent increase in City Employees contract. Whom are overworked and underpaid. Have a good day sir.

Do not cut Parks & Recs funding - increase it! Our parks are in a dire state and these recent events such as Viva Calle and Viva Parks are the best thing to happen to San Jose in a generation. Viva Calle should be expanded to a monthly event. Every neighborhood deserves parks that look like Willow Glen or Campbell.

Please cut police funding if funding must be cut - police routinely over-respond by sending multiple officers in separate vehicles to small incidents. An average insane homeless person gets 3-4 squad cars and an actual homicide gets 40+ responding officers. This is a giant waste of city resources. 1 badged officer and 1 community service officer would be plenty for homeless response and a homicide shouldn't need more than 5-10 officers on a bad day.

We need parks, not more cops. Parks keep us out of trouble, cops just get us into trouble.

Now is the time to protect our essential parks and public services like Viva Calle and Viva Parks.

As a former San Jose resident now living in Milpitas, I follow closely the events in our largest South Bay city and have participated in Viva Calle with my family for multiple years. It has become an event that we all look forward to, as it has opened up new neighborhoods in San Jose for us to enjoy at a slower pace, and allowed us to connect, see, wave hello, and chat with the larger community. It is an amazing feeling to see people from all walks of life come out, some on foot, some on bikes, some with dogs to enjoy together a nice spring, summer, or fall day. We've discovered new favorite dessert and lunch places that we otherwise would not have known about.

I would love to see open streets spread to other cities in the Bay Area. Morgan Hill most recently held a small event. I would love to see this in my own small town. I admire the leadership that San Jose has shown on this, and encourage the City Council to hang onto this community-building event and retain funding for Viva Calle.

Dear City Council,
Thank you for having previously approved park funding for the current fiscal year. I'm a new resident here in San Jose, and a newly regular volunteer at Viva Calle. Viva Calle and the bike community as a whole have been an essential part for me feeling like this is a place I can call home. I found the soul of the city through events like these, and I'm sure I'm not alone.

Viva Calle is always a highlight of my month whenever it occurs, my friends and I make it a point to go whenever we can. Being able to ride my bike around San Jose without worrying about vehicle traffic is such a joy, and it's one of the only times I feel comfortable enough to bring my dog out with me on a bike ride (he has a trailer that unfortunately doesn't get enough use). Furthermore, I think it's important to let as many people as possible see how effective bikes can be as a mode of transport - how many people even know you can get from Japantown to Willow Glen in under 30 minutes on a bike? Getting more people on bikes reduces traffic congestion, is better for the environment, and it's better for the physical and mental wellbeing of the people of this great city. I can draw a straight line between my first Viva Calle and beginning to ride my bike to work, and I can say confidently that this change has improved my health and my mood dramatically. I believe losing this opportunity will be a great disservice to the thousands of people who love this event, and to the people of San Jose whose lives could be changed for the better. I know as a council member, you have a lot of responsibilities and priorities to balance, but I urge you to remember that it's the people of this city who matter the most, and making this city a place that is good for the people should be the top priority. That's what Viva Calle is all about, and I hope you are able to see the value in that as well. Thank you.

Cutting staff positions and public programs after providing well deserved increases does not show staff they are valued. A percentage of those increases should have already been included in the budget that was passed knowing contracts were expiring and increases would be pending. This seems to be a lazy solution using politics to cast a negative image on underpaid City staff.

My 6 year old son and I truly enjoyed VivaCalle yesterday and would be sad to see this amazing community- building event be reduced or ended. We ask that you do not approve cuts to Parks Recreation and Neighborhood Services Placemaking activities, including Viva Parks and Viva Calle. I am also encouraging city council to find alternative sources of funding cuts to achieve their budget reallocation goals that don't make it harder for everyone to safely enjoy the outdoors. As supporters of Vision Zero and safe streets, we know that VivaCalle centers the safety of its residents above all else and encourages us all to envision our streets as spaces that are not just safe but enjoyable. Please do the right thing.

The parks and public services are one of the main reasons to live in San Jose. I and others meet our neighbors and build community! Also it draws people to different sections of town and introduces new areas and vendors in each San Jose region. It also gives families great family friendly options on tight budgets. Music, activities, movies and more! Taking them away will cause hopelessness and isolation in communities too. People look forward to the events when ever they come to their parks and regions especially events like Viva Calle and Viva parks. It shows positive tax dollars at work building up the San Jose community! Christopher Nelson

I went to my first Viva Calle on September 10 and loved it! Please don't let a fun community event go away.

Lastly, thank you for prioritizing the promotion of community building, bicycling, skateboarding, and any form of human-powered transit during the Viva Calle events. My family loves participating and exploring the routes. Viva Calle is a shining example of civic events that encourage the community to get outside, exercise, meet others, and explore different neighborhoods. I take pride in Viva Calle and enjoy telling others about it and I hope that the City Council does as well. Please do not cut funding for this wonderful community treasure.

I love Viva Calle and want it to continue. My whole family enjoys exploring the city on our bikes when the streets are closed. We feel safe and it is always one of the best days! We see friends and usually get lunch and ice cream on the road. I always tell people it's the funniest thing in San Jose. My kids like to ride ahead and explore and loop back to us. Always fun! Please keep it going!!

Please consider supporting Viva Calle. Now more than ever, people are hungry for community and belonging. We are fortunate in San Jose to not have the degree of problems facing SF and Oakland. The way to keep the community engaged is to foster healthy events that get people out of their homes and caring about their fellow neighbor. It's also a great way to get folks to see and explore other neighborhoods which helps promote those small businesses. The idea of Viva Calle can be found in other cities (Guadalajara, Cabo San Lucas) and they have much smaller budgets than San Jose. We can be the example for the entire Bay Area of how to come out on top after the pandemic. Also, getting regular people on the streets enlightens them to the issues we have with homeless and vagrants. We need everyone to care about our city. But you can't do that unless they have a reason to visit downtown and our urban neighborhoods. If funding cannot be obtained, I would encourage you to seek partnership with Specialized (headquartered in Morgan Hill) or Santa Cruz/Ibis Cycles (headquarters in Santa Cruz) to help with funding.

Viva Calle is a San Jose gem. It is a unique event that boosts a San Jose sense of community. And diversity. Taking this away would be a step in the wrong direction. If you want protect the budget may I suggest higher fines for traffic stops, texting while driving and running red lights which now appears to be a norm.

Today, Sept. 10th was a great community building day because of VivaCalle. So many families show up in neighborhoods and parks that aren't places they have been before. We are in dire need of building connections to strengthen our community and VivaCalle does just that.
