Dear City Council,
Thank you for having previously approved park funding for the current fiscal year. Our community needs parks and urban green space, both of which are a basic need that promote physical and mental health. Many parks still require repair and maintenance and staff are needed for either to occur. Thank you in advance for not reducing park funding this fiscal year. Now is the time to protect our essential parks and public services like Viva Calle and Viva Parks.
I have attended every Viva Calle & gathered friends to celebrate safe streets & city supported good health. As a professional I have promoted this event & as a community representative i am proud of this forward thinking effort to reduce chronic expensive diseases.

I know how important nature is for my own well-being, mental and physical health. I work as a trail patrol volunteer and see how many people use our parks for recreation, exercise, and to meet others.
I also love the Viva Calle events, where one can experience the city in a totally different way than if driving through by car. I got to know many neighborhoods much better that way.

To the City of San Jose. Please rescind your terrible decision to cut the Viva Parks/Viva Calle funding. This program is a highlight and a monument that defines the city, and provides a source of pride and engagement for the residents of the city and surrounding municipalities. The attempt to point blame on paying city workers their due wages is childish and shows poor planing by the current administration.

To love San José is to experience San José, and what a joyful experience it is to say, "come out and join us!" Let's dance and ride and enjoy our streets together! When something is good for us and our neighbors, it is a benefit to the entire community. To take that away is to say the community isn't worth holding onto. This is an investment— Save this and we save ourselves.

Viva Calle and the Viva Parks program have just recently starting to get the traction and participation that was envisioned years ago. These events are critical to civic life by providing meaningful community building opportunities, and encourage people to walk and explore their city in more sustainable ways. Cutting down on these programs is not only short-sighted, its a dis-investment in our community that will take years to rebuild.
There are plenty other avenues for reducing costs - lets look at the inefficiencies you have elsewhere. for example, do we need to spend $85k-$135k on the "Mayors Content Manager"? if we don't have budget for public services, we don't need to fund the Mayor's PR team. priorities! lets pick community over political growth.

Dear Mayor Mahan and Council Members,
VivaCalle! has become a cultural experience in San Jose that is inclusive for all of our neighborhoods and ethic/cultural groups. Not only does it encourage a healthy lifestyle, it offers a day of family entertainment and participation. People who come out to ride human powered mobility devices or to watch those who do.
Your support for open streets and VivaCalle! helps make San Jose a better place for families. Please continue your support for this program.
Here are some of the remarkable benefits it brings to our city:
1. Promoting Active Lifestyles: VivaCalle encourages physical activity and healthy living. Closing streets to cars opens them up for pedestrians, cyclists, and skaters, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the outdoors.
2. Fostering Social Connections: Our community thrives when people come together. VivaCalle provides a unique opportunity for residents to connect, engage in conversations, and build meaningful relationships with their neighbors.
3. Showcasing Local Culture: It's a platform for showcasing the rich tapestry of cultures that make up our city. From food vendors to live performances, VivaCalle celebrates our diverse heritage and the arts.
4. Boosting Local Economy: Local businesses benefit from increased foot traffic during VivaCalle events. It's a chance for our neighborhood shops and eateries to shine and for residents to discover new favorites.
5. Inspiring Environmental Awareness: By temporarily reducing car traffic, VivaCalle promotes eco-friendly transportation options and raises awareness about reducing our carbon footprint.
6. Strengthening Community Bonds: Events like VivaCalle strengthen our sense of community. When we come together to enjoy our city's public spaces, we reinforce our commitment to creating a more vibrant and connected community.
7. Creating Lasting Memories: For families, individuals, and friends, VivaCalle is an opportunity to create lasting memories. It's a day filled with laughter, exploration, and a shared appreciation for our city's beauty.
8. Supporting Health and Well-being: The open streets and recreational activities promote mental and emotional well-being. Taking a break from our busy lives to enjoy VivaCalle can be incredibly rejuvenating.
Thank you,

Dear City Council,
Thank you for having previously approved park funding for the current fiscal year. Our community needs parks and urban green space, both of which are a basic need that promote physical and mental health. Many parks still require repair and maintenance and staff are needed for either to occur. Thank you in advance for not reducing park funding this fiscal year. Now is the time to protect our essential parks and public services like Viva Calle and Viva Parks.
Viva Calle is fun and engaging way for our community to experience their own town without the reliance on fuel while also boosting local business awareness. I do not think there should be any financial cuts made to this program and believe that this should be a regularly scheduled event once a month or so. It shows people that they can get around without the use of an automobile, and introduces them to local shops they might not have heard of. Please find another way to make budget cuts that does not involve undermining Vision Zero or pedestrian infrastructure as our societies reliance on gasoline is a destructive habit that can be slowly rectified given the right choices are made.

Viva Calle is one of San Jose's best investments in community. It connects people across neighborhoods, invites civic participation and highlights local businesses. It is an excellent investment of city dollars and should be funded every year!

Dear Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
I am writing this letter to encourage you to find alternative ways to save the Viva Calle and Viva Parks Program. l've had the privilege to participate in each of the programs as a resident and public servant before retiring from the City of San Jose.
Both programs have made a positive impact on the City and communities where the events have been activated.
The events have been instrumental in connecting residences to City, County, and Non-Profit services.
The Viva Park events have been a source of hope for communities impacted by violence. In many cases it is the first-time residence are enjoying their neighborhood parks and talking with someone who can help them with their concerns and or direct them to the right resources. I've talked with mothers who would not let their children play at the nearby park or even in front of their house out of fear. However, when Viva Parks was activated in their neighborhood the families would actually come and enjoy themselves without fear. I am writing this letter on behalf of those families who feel their voices do not count.
Please look for alternative ways to keep the funding for Viva Parks and Viva Calle.
Respectfully,
Esther G. Mota
District 8 Resident

San Jose City Council,
We are not residents of San Jose but we are writing to respectfully encourage you to continue funding VivaCalle! We have participated via bicycle in VivaCalle multiple times and it has always been a joy! It is amazing to see parts of the San Jose community that we rarely visit in such a safe and leisurely way.
What is even more amazing is to see all the families and so many children out walking, skating, biking, and having a grand time knowing they can go down the streets in complete safety.
VivaCalle has so much going for it - helping people stay healthy, encouraging non-vehicle transportation, showing off the diverse communities in San Jose, and benefitting the small businesses and restaurants along the routes.
It has become a great tradition - one that San Jose can be proud of. So again, we hope you will continue funding for the wonderful community event.
Thank you for time and consideration of our views,
Kathy and Paul Meagher

C'mon you guys. This program is a positive one. Only good things come from it. Taking the money from here to buy more military equipment for the police is not solving the real need here. How 'bout cutting some of the $400,000 salaries in City Hall?
There are lots of ways to spend and save money. This choice, while an easy target, is one of the worst options.

We need neighborhood celebrations to foster better communications among neighbors in San Jose. We have more parking lots than parks in this city and need to expand the park system. Parks help children and families enjoy life out of doors and build strong communities.

Reinforcing awareness of People on and around the streets. It's a pity that San Jose doesn't already have better public transportation infrastructure, taking away public events and spaces will just stagnate the city and reinforce a car centric city model that is NOT sustainable.

I love VivaCalle! Please do not cut funding...DO NOT CUT FUNDING to Viva Calle. VivaCalle is more than just a street closure; it's a celebration of our community's vitality, diversity, and shared spirit.
Thank you,

I have been living in San Jose since 1987. South First has reeked of urine the whole time. San Jose never had the money to fix that? Viva Calle is great, but riding through town with my daughter I had to admit to her that it remains, literally, a urinal. Funds have been misallocated for years. Paying city workers a fair wage is not out of reach.
Dear Members of the City Council, I'm writing to express my strong support for the memo put forth by Councilmembers David Cohen, Pam Foley, and Sergio Jimenez. Their proposal offers a balanced approach that ensures fair compensation for city workers while preserving essential services. I urge you to support the memo and choose a path that benefits our entire community. I'll be attending tomorrow's City Council meeting to voice my support. Thank you for your dedication to our city's well-being. Sincerely, Michael Delaney

Please do not cut funds from VivaCalle! This is an important event for San Jose residents as well as those outside the city. I am a resident of Santa Clara, and my family and I have made it to all the VivaCalle events this year, and we thoroughly enjoy it! This is a great event for all people, of all ages, of all abilities. It is great to see people outside taking advantage of the safe streets; I love seeing kids being able to freely bike without their parents worrying they will be hit by a car driver. This is also great for the businesses and city organizations to get great exposure! San Jose needs more of these events, not fewer. Please prioritize your budget accordingly to ensure this important event continues for years to come.
Thank you.

To: City Council and associated staff working to keep San Jose rad First off - I'm not a San Jose resident. I wish I was, but I live in the cultural wasteland that is the peninsula. But 2-3 days a week I drive, bus, or bike on down to San Jose because that's where things are actually happening. I volunteer at the San Jose Bike Clinic, I play bike polo, I hit up San Jose Bike Party, sometimes I get on down the trail to Morgan Hill, and I get to tour your wonderful city when y'all put on Viva Calle.
I'm not telling you what to do with your city, but I sure hope that you keep these institutions around long enough for me to find a job that's close enough to San Jose to move on down to the coolest spot in the Bay. Yall actually have some culture, some community, some happening down here, and I sure hope you chose to keep it up (by keeping doing Viva Calle for one!) Thanks for being cool,

Dear Council Member Foley and Mayor Mahan,
I am writing in regards to Council Agenda Item 3.4 tomorrow (Sept 12th). I appreciate the challenges of balancing the city's budget, but it is disheartening that Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) is once again slated to disproportionately bear the brunt of these cuts. PRNS provide vital services to our community, services that anchor San Jose for our young and old, and everyone in between. Programs like Viva Calle and Viva Parks enliven our city and reflect the best of us. They allow us to engage with and thrive in our parks and public spaces. Viva Calle and Viva Parks are both proposed for substantial cuts. In addition, recreational lead positions in our community centers are proposed to be cut.
Community Centers are the beating heart of our neighborhoods, supporting many of our youth, families, and older adults that depend on preschool, after school, senior nutrition, exercise classes, and so much more, particularly in our most underserved and historically ignored communities. We have so much work to do to create a more equitable, welcoming, safe, and just city, and our community centers are at the frontlines of that work.
PRNS needs more support, not cuts. Our parks already struggle with tremendous maintenance backlogs. The programs and services the Department provides are essential to our communities around the city. Viva Calle, Viva Parks, and our community centers are keystones in making San Jose the vibrant and welcoming place we strive to be.
I want to see budget shortages addressed in more creative ways. PRNS is not discretionary.
Sincerely,
Janny Choy

Dear Mayor and Council Members:
I hope you'll figure out a way to continue Viva Calle in San Jose.
It's a city-wide open house and celebration. It gets people out of cars and into the communities, and lets everyone meet their council members, city and county department staff, nonprofits, and other resources in the community.
For my husband and me, it's a reason to visit San Jose and discover shops and restaurants we wouldn't otherwise even know about.
This past Sunday, we enjoyed lunch at a taqueria along the way with other friends we ran into who were visiting from Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, and the San Diego area, respectively.
I suspect its success and widespread popularity is why it was proposed for cutbacks, to get people's attention, at the very least. Surely there is a better way to economize.
Thank you,
Betsy Megas

I support raises. It's time we correct the fact that our workers are criminally underpaid. It's time to give staff somewhat competitive wages that will make it less difficult for them to afford to work for our city, and attract talent to vacant positions.
I oppose reduction of PRNS positions and Viva Calle funding. Shame on the city manager and mayor for threatening funding for the city's best programs in an attempt to turn public opinion against union bargaining for fair wages. I am eager to hear and support alternative budget proposals from more level-headed councilmembers and staff. The Memorandum from Cohen, Foley & Jimenez, 9/8/2023 is better than the original, but still insufficient.
Hundreds of public comments have made it clear: Viva Calle and other PRNS programs are what make San Jose residents healthier (both physically and mentally) and happier. When politicians talk about activating and revitalising the city, and connecting communities, this is THE best way to do it. Don't squander a great thing.
If we need to save money on Viva Calle, perhaps we can do so by paying fewer overtime SJPD officers to work the event (and paying less SJPD overtime in general, for events that realistically do not require constant on-site supervision from armed officers).
Thank you,
Jordan Moldow

I live in neighboring Santa Clara. I find parks programs, particularly Viva Calle and Viva Parks, draw me to San Jose and help build community. There are few other events where it's easy to interact with public officials from so many backgrounds in one place. There are few other events that draw people from all backgrounds and all across the city together. Estimates put attendance at over 10% of the city's population at a single Viva Calle event. Few other single city services are used so frequently by people of so many different backgrounds.
City parks connect me to San Jose. With traffic, often my quickest way into the City is by bike on the Guadalupe River Trail.
Please, find ways to continue parks programs at their current frequency. Give city staff a chance to stretch funds or raise revenue. Shift responsibilities around to increase efficiency, is it more efficient for City Streets to maintain some larger paved trails and walkways? Please find a way to maintain these popular parks programs, Gavin Achtemeier

Dear Members of the City Council,
As a lifelong resident of San Jose and a voter in District 2, I'm writing to express my strong support for the memo put forth by Councilmembers David Cohen, Pam Foley, and Sergio Jimenez. Their proposal offers a balanced approach that ensures fair compensation for city workers while preserving essential services. I urge you to support the memo and choose a path that benefits our entire community. Our city thrives when we provide strong benefits to our hard-working employees and opportunities for fun and learning to our city's children!
Thank you for your dedication to our city's well-being.
Sincerely, Pamela

I have become aware the the City of San Jose is considering cutting funding for Viva Calle. I am asking you not to do so -- Viva Calle is a gem!
I have lived in the south bay (Santa Clara) since 1985 but only started bicycling frequently in the past two years. This festival is one of the reasons I now love to bicycle. There are so many reasons why I feel it is not only a lot of fun, but an important outlet for culture, small business and community building in a way that is rarely as successful as what I have witnessed. While not everyone bikes, enough folks do that it makes for a different and more festive event. Everyone I saw was smiling and having fun - people on inline skates, bicycles, on foot, skate boards and home-made contraptions they obviously create just to show at Viva Calle! • It encourages community and a mix of cultures. This is so important these days with so many of us addicted to our phones at the expense of getting face to face time with other people, especially from those communities you may not interact with much. • It encourages activity— I ride the 7 miles to the event and then home after, plus around the full route of the event to see everything. Even for people who walk— it is very healthy. We all need more events like this. • It provides a venue for small businesses along the route to be noticed and attract new customers. This year, I was going to stop at Pau Hana Shave Ice on Jackson but there was a line out the door and down the street. I'll bet there are some of those folks who will go back after being exposed to authentic Hawaiian style shaved ice— if you haven't tried it yet, you should too! I also made a mental note of several interesting shops and eateries along the ride which I may try with my family and friends. I have to believe this is a boon to many small businesses along the route. • It provides a venue too for lots of community organizations to get their word out.I stopped at a lot of booths this year to chat with the folks about what they are doing. I was amazed at how many there were. This too makes the event so special. • it provides a venue for young entertainers getting a start— | listened to music, watched a demonstration of BMX bike tricks from young athletes which was amazing. It's an important outlet for young and local talent to get noticed.
Thanks much for your consideration and I truly hope you decide to continue to support this wonderful event.
Regards,
Joe DePrimo

Dear Honorable Mayor, Vice-Mayor and City Council,
Thank you for having previously approved park funding for the current fiscal year. Our community needs parks and urban green space, both of which are a basic need that promote physical and mental health. Many parks still require repair and maintenance, and staff are necessary to accomplish these tasks. Thank you in advance for not reducing park funding this fiscal year. Now is the time to protect our essential parks and public services like Viva CalleSJ and Viva Parks.
Honorable Mayor, Vice-Mayor and City Council please find an alternative source of funding cuts to achieve your budget reallocation goals that allows for everyone to safely enjoy the outdoors. Viva CalleSJ and Viva Parks promote the safety of its residents above all else and encourages all to envision our streets and parks as spaces that are not just safe but enjoyable.
Respectfully,
Brad Imamura

Honorable San Jose City Council,
Please continue to fund Viva Calle SJ! We must get many more people walking and biking on a regular basis and Viva Calle SJ is a great way to get people to think differently and celebrate active transportation.
Motor vehicles are going to be the death of us in so many ways and by us I mean our future generations:
- Climate Change
- Lack of Exercise
- Death from motor vehicle crashes
- Exhaustion of our resources (we are burning thru Earth's reserves far too fast - cars, even electric ones require massive resources for car construction and disposal as well as for the huge roads and parking spaces they need. - Lack of people meeting each other face to face as humans (walled away from each other in glass and metal bubbles where people fall victim to road rage and stick to their own echo chambers) Bicycles are the most efficient form of transportation we have invented yet and encourage more direct social interaction in addition to all their other many benefits.
We must deprioritize cars and shift funding to active transportation instead and encourage the general populace to shift away from cars as well.
Thanks!

Hello,
I wanted to reach out to show support for Viva Calle. Viva Calle is a special event for the community to be able to explore the San Jose streets in a fun and healthy way. It brings members of the community together and gives an opportunity to interact with each other and with local businesses or groups that otherwise I may have never met or heard of. Please continue Viva Calle! Thanks,

Viva Calle is by far the most unifying event the city holds every year. Residents from all walks of life come together to explore their neighborhoods and discover new ones, while enjoying the beautiful weather and community.
Cutting funds to parks and this program are detrimental to the place making and community building that our city's PRNS works so hard to do.
Please do not cut funds from Viva Calle.

Viva Calle is our family's favorite event. We've been to every single one since it started, rain or shine. We've invited so many new people to join us every time. Everyone we see at the event is always so happy and joyful - there is no reason that anyone would feel otherwise. We get to see new neighborhoods and enjoy the city with people we might not otherwise interact with.
Parks are also extremely important to the social infrastructure of any city. Without funding for green space and parks, the poorer neighborhoods suffer even more and the SES gap furthers, causing harsh disparities not just in income, but education, health, and lifespan.

Viva Calle San Jose means so much to not only me but also our community. I went to my first event two summers ago and it gave me the confidence to re-learn how to ride a bike it was a wonderful experience. I was able to bond with my loved ones and venture out of my comfort zone but still feel very safe due to the closed off streets.
When Viva Calle San Jose closes down streets it creates an even safer environment for riders and families. It helps those explore their community even more and support small businesses who maybe haven't been able to put them selves out their. so for our community and future riders keep Viva Calle SJ alive and open for our community to still be able to enjoy.

We must continue funding for the Vive Calle parks and events because of the many benefits it raises. The biggest thing is that Vive Calle brings a sense of community and inclusivity, bringing people together from diverse backgrounds to enjoy a good community event together and promote physical activity. Overall it has led to a closer community. Especially now in which community is something that is hard to find and expand on and our city has felt more isolated than anything.
More importantly, parks are incredibly important for mental well-being. Multiple studies have shown the positive impact of green spaces on mental health, reducing symptoms of depression as well as making the city aesthetically more pleasing to look at overall rather than a dull landscape. I know that it has definitely helped me, whenever / am too stressed / walk over to my local park in order to relax. The cuts to park funding would not only take away so many benefits for people but also hurt the overall health and well-being of society.

San Jose is a city with such rich cultural resources, but consistently fails to celebrate them. We have a great unmet need to create spaces and events that invite residents to come out and enjoy the city. Viva Calle is a successful, recognizable brand that celebrates local communities, performers, artists, and culture. It would be a shame to remove support for this iconic event!

In our family, we often talk about how San Jose has a potential to be a much more family-friendly, livable place.
Events like Viva Calle and the Viva Parks celebrations are crucial to making San Jose the kind of place where people actually want to live. We've participated in seven Viva Calles, including Sunday's event, and the streets were full of people from all walks of life, coming together in celebration of a beautiful day. It's good for the citizens, it's good for the businesses, and it is an all too rare event for San Jose can actually shine. The fact that the city council can't find another place to cut funding is both unacceptable and unbelievable. Stop punishing the people of the city and start working to make it a better city.

As someone who is fortunate enough to live on 12 acres in San Jose I know firsthand the value and importance of green space. Please do not remove funding for parks- too many people rely on parks as their only open spaces and the programs funded by the city are just as important.
Matt Roben

Viva Calle is one of the best things about San Jose! This is a chance for the community to enjoy our public spaces, be active, and to enjoy the good weather and culture of our city.
I also think it's really shameful how the mayor is trying to blame the city workers' negotiations for a pay raise on the "need" to cut funding to Viva Calle. Don't blame the city workers - the buck stops with Mayor Mahan.

Viva Calle is a wonderful event where all citizens/residents of the city come out and play. It needs to stay.

Viva Calle is such a fantastic way to see our city for all ages. It would be such a shame for our city to make even the slightest cut to these events! Hanna Ritchey

Without community, we have nothing. Without art, we have nothing. Viva Parks events are an integral part of who we are as a City. They give us opportunities to learn, grow, create, advocate, bond. They provide opportunities to meet neighbors, get to know areas of the City we love but seldom visit, support mom and pop shops, and see the good in humanity. Keeping Parks programs keeps our community alive and helps us thrive.

I moved to San Jose in the last couple years and have struggled physically and mentally with the move to a more urban landscape than where I grew up in San Mateo. I am at my best when I can move and find peace in natural settings and that is very hard to do in a crowded city with a lot of traffic to get anywhere. Honestly, when I think about the positive aspects of living in San Jose, Viva Calle is one of the first things that come to mind. It allows me and my friends and family to bike safely and explore the city while being exposed to different community organizations and cultures. Cyclists are an important part to the community that can help curb carbon emissions and this should be celebrated and encouraged. It's hard to bike around San Jose and feel safe around all the cars and homeless encampments. At least Viva Calle days give us an opportunity once in a while. More cities should do this and it would be a shame on San Jose to de-fund such opportunities. I would accept miles of clean bike paths in natural settings instead, but that is long gone already.
Nature deficit disorder is real and we need every bit of park space and freedom to wander that we have and can afford to create.

It's different from any other event because you see families that are biking from their homes and we get the opportunity to make new connections.
Moving to a culture where biking/walking is safer will help the community come together more.

I love VivaCalle! Please do not cut funding to Viva Calle. VivaCalle is more than just a street closure; it's a celebration of our community's vitality, diversity, and shared spirit.
I urge the council to support the proposal from Councilmembers Cohen, Foley, and Jimenez in order to preserve Viva Calle and Viva Parks.

To the office of the city clerk,
Having been a resident of the South Bay for many years, I have always participated in VivaCalle with my family as a way to explore San Jose and promote the accessibility of our streets outside of a car-centric mindset. It has also been a great way to engage with those in our neighborhoods and meet with local organizations and businesses. A reduction of funding to VivaCalle and other SJ parks and recreation events would result in a huge loss to communities in San Jose and surrounding areas. Please do not approve of these proposed cuts. Events like VivaCalle are crucial in creating opportunities for positive community interactions and encourage greener means of getting around our cities.
Sincerely,
Tuwin Lam

Good morning,
I am writing to voice my opinion on the importance of Viva Calle. This past Sunday was absolutely amazing. HUGE TURNOUT. I saw more happy families getting together and having a wonderful time than I have before. This made me happy. My family and I also love the event and look forward to it every time it is held. This event is crucial to the San Jose bike community as it is a bonding experience as well. With so many people wanting to stay locked inside and be glued to a screen, this is truly a gem. I hope to see Viva Calle continue for years to come. Thank you.

Hello City Clerk,
Viva Calle is an event that my family looks forward to participating in. It is a time to connect with friends and family in a different way that we normally do. Please do not cut funding for this amazing event that brings the city together.
I support Viva Calle and want it to continue.

Hello,
My name is Wei Yan, and I am a San Jose resident living in the Edenvale neighborhood. I have heard that there is a potential funding cut for Viva Calle and that it will be discussed in today's city council meeting.
I urge you to not cut funding for Viva Calle as it is an amazing event that brings together the community and provides an opportunity for residents to enjoy our beautiful city. This past Sunday's event was a great example of the value this event provides for the city. You can feel the joy in the air as the streets were filled with families & friends rolling safely together on two wheels. And each activity hub allowed different vendors and organizations to sell their goods or give information to a large audience.
Thank you for taking the time to read my message. I once again ask you allow Viva Calle to remain an event that can be an San Jose staple for years to come.
Respectfully,
-Wei Yan
