Dear City Council,
Thank you for having previously approved park funding for the current fiscal year. Our community needs parks and urban green space, both of which are a basic need that promote physical and mental health. Many parks still require repair and maintenance and staff are needed for either to occur. Thank you in advance for not reducing park funding this fiscal year. Now is the time to protect our essential parks and public services like Viva Calle and Viva Parks.

Viva Calle allows us to bring together the community with family and friends experiencing San Jose and its culture .My family and i love riding our bikes exploring what San Jose has to offer enjoying the San Jose sun and people. we hope to continue to enjoy this beautiful community event years to come thanks for hearing us out.

Viva Calle !!!!!!!!!!!

Strolling in a scooter, passing by streets where cars typically were. To both my right and left there were cyclists. The sun beaming, directly towards my face, my helmet burning, traveling long distances at the age of seven. This was my earliest memory of going to Vivacalle. I was and still am rather fond of this event. A time where family and friends could unite to get some exercise in and be part of the community. It's not only the distance you travel but as well as all the events that go on. People using unicycles and juggling, learning about different communities, and even the people that cheer. All of them makes these events really fun.

This event is something that helps build a culture in San Jose. As rather we don't have one, we shouldn't be chipping away at the small identity that we have built upon. It's not only me who says this, but the entire community, if anything we need more events like this to make San Jose more lively. As dull and lifeless place this city is becoming, we as a community need to step and make it possible for events such as Vivacalle to remain in tact.

Sincerely, Samuel Salazar

Vive Calle cements itself as a community event to spend time with family and friends.

When I was young and tried to learn how to pedal, my fear of falling always overtook my ability to learn. Though in 2020 when a family member offered to teach me I was ecstatic at the opportunity. Ever since then me and my mom go every time it comes up. Talking with people who know a lot about biking makes it easy for beginners to understand basic repair issues. Going down an underpass at full speed without worrying about cars is exhilarating. Seeing people from all different backgrounds in San Jose come together creates a sense of community nothing else does. Even though it takes a lot of manpower to function and plan, events like these are too impactful to cut, which is why I implore the council to keep Vive Calle running.

Sincerely, Benicio Mayoral

Hello my name is Ryder Ramirez I'm a resident of San Jose's Alameda district, I grew up near and around the downtown area in which I still reside in. Over the years, Viva Calle was a staple in my childhood often bringing my family together as well as promoting community awareness and helping out local vendors. I can remember my younger self on training wheels keeping along with my parents as we walked around downtown with no worries of cars or congested and heavily-trafficked areas. Although faint its still memories I had growing up and though many things in my area have left and been brought up it is one event I can still recall. Fast forward to today I recall biking from my home off of the Alameda to the Rose Garden with my family, making more memories that / will never forget especially when I felt the safety of no cars in my way and even branched off and went up to Japan town by myself without my family, giving me a breathe of freedom and independence.

Viva Calle even today is very refreshing especially after the lockdown allowing me to roam the streets with my friends and find out about certain projects in my area. It is for this reason I think this public service is so important for as other teens in the area its a nice break from the surrounding and depressing gridlock traffic in downtown and populated San Jose. Not to mention the convenience of having these events so close to home, allowing for many people and communities to participate without much struggle. The parks themselves also hold a special place in my heart as many of them were where I and many others were raised running around playing in the grass, mud, and sand of the area. Lastly, these events and places hold special places in many San Jose residents heart where many were raised, comfortable, and still dwell.

A couple years ago my friends introduced me to my first ever first Friday Art Walk in downtown San Jose. The event is an evening where vendors set up on a street in the SoFA district displaying live art and selling food, clothes, jewelry, accessories and, of course, art. They allow free entry into art museums after 6pm to encourage people to stop by and look, something I marveled at my first time going. Since then, I've made a habit of going with friends almost every month to connect to the local art community.

But as I started going to the Art Walks I was made aware of Viva Calle, a sister event to the art walk. It also hosts local venders and live performances on closed off streets throughout San Jose. They work to enrich the culture and community involvement, providing opportunities for everyone to participate and interact while biking down the closed off roads. So naturally, when I heard the Viva Calle event was set to have a reduction in funding, I was deeply disappointed. A cut in funding is going to limit the very thing that this event seeks to promote, a growing, equitable event that brings people and business to various parts of San Jose, in a lively, community building fashion. A reduction in funding ignores the success this event has had in the past by limiting the scale of it in the future. As someone who personally makes a point of attending events like it, I find it very disheartening and believe cutting the funding for Viva Calle would be a disservice to the event, in a period where the city should be making a point of supporting events like these to encourage local vendors and foster a stronger community.

Viva Calle is such a wonderful community event- I love seeing everyone take to our streets and enjoy car free access to our awesome neighborhoods. We also need to maintain our parks and open spaces- some of these areas are the only green space/nature area that our families have access to. Please don't cut this funding.

Viva Calle and Viva Parks are programs that are an essential part of community camaraderie and should not be subject to reduced funding. I personally have seen the positive impact Viva Calle has; every year I look forward to getting together with my friends to bike Viva Calle and it is a great experience because you see so many people from the community of San Jose proudly celebrating San Jose together. I am friends with a family of whom the Viva Parks summer events were the highlight of their summers because their young children had the opportunity to visit different San Jose parks to participate in fun and engaging activities. Many people hold the Viva Calle and Viva Parks programs close to their hearts and it would be amazing to have more people experience the benefits from these community programs, so l urge you please do not reduce the funding for these programs. Thank you.

My name is Penelope Medina-Sanchez and I am a senior at Lincoln High School in San Jose. Learning that Alum Rock Park is at risk of closing due to the current conditions it is in saddens me because it has always been a crucial part of my childhood. I attended multiple summer camps there growing up, learning about the native species and environment within the park. When I was in middle school, I joined the cross country team in sixth grade and our first meet took place at Alum Rock Park. It was one of the best experiences I had during the season because of the beautiful scenery from the trail. My mom and I were also avid hikers on the trails at Alum Rock so it will be disappointing to see if this park closes due to lack of maintenance.

Along with Alum Rock park, Viva Calle holds a special place in my heart. Since middle school, I have been a volunteer for the Art and Design Thinking Camp. This camp is East San Jose based and focuses on inspiring the youth to learn and explore STEM concepts. We volunteer at local events all around San Jose, such as the Tech Museum, Holiday Art and Craft Fair and of course, Viva Calle. It's also one of the best events San Jose provides because it really connects the community and helps many local businesses and vendors gain customers.

With this, I hope that the City of San Jose rethinks their decision and continues to protect Viva Parks and Viva Calle.

Now is the time to protect our essential parks and public services like Viva Calle and Viva Parks.

My name is Lawrenze Vigo and I am a senior attending Lincoln High School. Let me start off with one thing: all of the city parks found around San Jose are undeniably essential to our communities as much as they are to other major cities.

My whole life, I grew up going to nearby parks in Northside such as Backesto Park and Ryland Park. These parks were such an integral part of my childhood as my family and I were able to interact with other families, make new friends, and to create more memories. Just thinking about how these wonderful experiences may be a dream in the near future makes me worry for the future generations of San Jose.

COVID-19 has already taken a large toll on some people mentally, as the whole globe went on pause and people were unable to meet face to face with others. Instead, the pandemic should be a learning lesson and in fact tie our communities even tighter than before. Therefore, Viva Calle, Viva Parks, and all other institutions promoting the livelihood of San Jose communities should not be cut off from any funding whatsoever.

Dear City Council,

Many parks still require repair and maintenance and staff are needed for either to occur. Thank you in advance for not reducing park funding this fiscal year. My name is Deborah Guevara, a senior at Abraham Lincoln High School, and I believe that keeping these parks well-funded is important for the community and creating good experiences. As people are coming back together after the pandemic lockdowns, events especially the traditional Viva Calle and Viva Parks are the main attractions for reunions. The lockdowns left many isolated and paranoid about going outside but events like Viva Calle emphasize community, and share cultural knowledge but most importantly it's fun for everyone. It is a motivation to learn and get outside either by yourself or with others and explore different music, and activities or just go on a bike ride.

The first time I went to Viva Calle, it was a surprise since I hadn't heard about it before. This was around my first years of middle school, pre-pandemic and there were several people at the event since it was well-displayed and entertaining. Furthermore, I saw several people riding bikes up and down the street which not only is exciting it's also great for the environment. If funding is cut from Viva Calle and Viva parks, the entertainment and display won't be the same and people may not enjoy the new look, decreasing the availability of people attending the event. This event increases community, is great for the environment, and increases state revenue from the taxes people pay when selling at the event.

Overall, Viva Calle is important since it's traditional and can continue for future generations which is why it's important to keep these parks well-funded and entertaining.

Dear City Council,

Many parks still require repair and maintenance and staff are needed for either to occur. Thank you in advance for not reducing park funding this fiscal year. Our funding for these parks should be cut due to all the positivity they bring in the community in everyone's day to day life. Without these parks many people will not get a sense of community when at these parks and it will be harder for people to socialize. These parks also are the place of many social gatherings (bbq's, special events, etc), without them where will they be held? This isn't just parks we are talking about, this could be someone's childhood; that they grew up going to these parks and still continue to go to this day. It could be someone's escape place, getting away from everything and taking a mental break. These parks have let people stay sane. especially coming out of a pandemic with having to stay inside all the time. Where will people in the area go to get some fresh air or have fun with their families on a sunny day. Like I mentioned before, this isn't just a park.

If we cut funding for these parks now who's to say we won't just continue to cut funding for multiple parks until we are down to none. We have to protect what we have in this community considering how much is left of it. Yes / know that cutting funding for these parks will lead to other parks getting the materials they need and having construction done too it, but down the line it is going to just lead to more and more cutting because if it happened once it can happen again. There can be other ways to raise the money to fix other parks, I don't think closing down other parks is the solution. Fundraisers could be held and the community could help with trying to keep their neighborhood parks safe.

As a craftsperson who has had booths at Viva Parks events I have come to appreciate the City employees who work with these events and my hopes are that they will continue to be employed. Although I live in the unincorporated part of the Alum Rock area, I benefit from City support of projects such as the improvements to Alum Rock Park, one of my favorite destinations since the early 1980's. And my husband, an enthusiastic cyclist, is an active participant in Viva Calle.

San Jose needs events that make it stand out in the Bay Area. Without programs like viva Calle and parks, you are robbing the community of a sense of identity, and disincentive people from wanting to live here. Downtown is already a ghost town where the only thing people can do is get drunk. San Jose deserves healthy activities too. You have the power to make that happen!

Viva Calle is our family's favorite community event in San Jose. As residents of Downtown we don't generally feel safe riding our bikes in our neighborhood due to traffic and the joy and sense of freedom that comes with Viva Calle is something we look forward to. We gather together with our neighbors and feel safe riding on San Jose streets with our children. At community hub centers we often run into friends from school, which helps our children foster deeper relationships with their peers. Please do not take Viva Calle away from San Jose. It is a wonderful community event that needs to be preserved.

Our parks are crucial to us. In my own experience, I grew up with parks surrounding me. Right next to my house, there was a park that I would go to every day. It brings me a lot of joy and memories whenever I see it. I was always an outgoing girl who loved to have fun with friends and run around. Even as I am getting older, I continue to visit the park and others in my area to have fun. If I come across a swing, I spend hours on it, experiencing the same fun I did when / was younger. Whenever I have my family over, we gather at the park where I played as a child, watching our little ones grow and play. I believe these parks should remain and be properly maintained so that other children can feel the same way I did when / was young. yaretzi Miranda chavez

Get rid of the Reid Hillview Airport and then there will be more funding for all the parks in San Jose.

Too much money is wasted on that awful airport that continues to poison our children and the entire community of the EastSide.
