RECOMMENDATION

1. Approve Juneteenth Tower Lighting on June 19, 2024, as a City Council sponsored Special Event and approve the expenditure of funds.

2. Place the item on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, Council Agenda for action.

BACKGROUND
On February 1, 2005, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 72517 which requires Councilmembers to submit a memorandum to the Rules Committee regarding proposed City Council sponsored Special Events and the proposed use of any funds in Special Events Accounts.

The City will light the tower in honor of Juneteenth. Celebrating Juneteenth in San José holds profound significance, symbolizing the city's commitment to commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and promoting racial equality and justice. By recognizing Juneteenth, San José acknowledges and honors the resilience, contributions, and cultural heritage of the Black community. Embracing Juneteenth strengthens the city's dedication to creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
