4 Team San Jose met with marketing stakeholders from the San Jose Downtown Association, the Mayor’s Office, the City Manager’s Office, the City’s Office of Economic Development, and Council District 3, on August 9th and August 30th, to begin coordinated destination, regional, and local marketing efforts. The next meeting will include representatives from SJC and SJSU.

Thus far, we have initiated a shared marketing asset database for strategic deployment, the start of a Citywide Editorial Calendar of events for collaborative promotion, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and the group agreed to launch shared branding and coordinated messaging for the first time to promote San Jose’s Holiday Season this December.

Additional initiatives include collaborations on shared branding, collateral, imagery, and marketing strategy.

Event information and promotional details will be shared with coordinating organizations and the downtown business and hospitality communities through the 60-day calendar email distribution and at TSJ’s Bi-Annual Summit for Hospitality.

Collaborative Marketing Initiative
5 Team San Jose launches it’s first Bi-Annual Summit for Hospitality (TSJ BASH) on Tuesday, September 17th.

The event features updates on Team San Jose, hospitality industry outlooks, outlooks for TSJ managed facilities, ways that businesses can utilize and leverage TSJ to grow their marketing reach and increase sales.

Extensive outreach through TSJ’s own channels was
supplemented with assistance from: the San Jose Chamber of Commerce, San Jose Downtown Association, Community
Strong Strategies, the City of San Jose and affiliated
neighborhood business associations.

TSJ Outreach to Local Businesses
6 Team San Jose was asked to present and presented a draft paid media plan for a “Stay and Play” campaign at a
meeting with City staff, the San Jose Sports Authority, San Jose Sharks, and San Jose Earthquakes on August 22nd.

TSJ is eager to further participate in the City-Led 2026 efforts.

City staff will be presenting an in-depth report on 2026 activities at the October 2024 CEDC meeting.

19 THE DOWNTOWN HOTEL MARKET IS ACCELERATING ITS RECOVERY

HOTEL PERFORMANCE

AND TRAVEL TRENDS
After several years of being the area slowest to recover, downtown has accelerated its recovery – especially in 2024. Over the first six months, demand was up 17% YOY. However, slow international and business travel recovery will delay the return to pre-COVID levels until 2027.

SUMMER TRAVEL HAS BEEN STRONG
July and August saw considerable growth in downtown demand. A larger percentage of visitors stayed overnight. They also stayed longer on average than last summer.

INTERNATIONAL VISITATION IS BEGINNING TO RETURN
North American markets (Canada and Mexico) are recovering to pre-pandemic levels of visitor spending in 2024. Overseas markets are growing but won’t reach pre-pandemic spending levels until 2026.

28 PAID MEDIA

PERFORMANCE
Consumer
29 • The objective of the plan was to drive incremental hotel room nights, and thus TOT revenue, through consumer visitation by targeting and converting digital travel intenders through paid digital media strategies.
• Per City Council direction, moving forward, marketing efforts will also address residents in support of Downtown visitation.
• The media mix for this plan was made up of digital programmatic, high-performing travel brands (such as Expedia), paid social and paid search.
• Last fiscal year’s campaign investment was strategically allocated with a focus on prioritizing heavier investments into production partners, aiming to deliver as strong a Return on Advertising Spend (ROAS) as possible.

PAID MEDIA PLAN OVERVIEW
30 • The campaign creative was produced by local artists, and it also featured San Jose’s global dining experience. The creative was featured on Visit San Jose’s paid and owned media channels including consumer and meetings websites, eCRM, (email data bases of both consumers and meeting planners), earned media (PR placements), and social media. • The campaigns include multiple placements with Visit California- across all their platforms. • To address local audiences as requested moving forward, we have added in-market digital targeting and local billboards and radio advertising in the new fiscal year. • We will continue to measure ROAS to ensure incremental revenue is generated through marketing efforts.

● Industry Standards
○ CTR goal of 0.40% is a blend of industry standards for Social (0.90% FB benchmark) + Digital (0.08%-0.12%) + Native (1-3%). ○ CPE is based on estimated amount of engagements per partner dependent on media spend, impression volume and tactic. It’s calculated by spend divided by engagement (digital video views, clicks contributing to site traffic and engagement with custom units). We want CPE to be as low as possible to demonstrate efficiencies through media buying power and optimizations. ○ CPI is based on estimated amount of inquiries per partner dependent on media spend, impression volume and tactic. Note that only portion of our media (Convert tactics) is optimized toward inquiries to drive a further vacation planning action.
