Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
For the past 26 years, I have made San Jose my home. My children have attended public schools here and played baseball in Little League and Soccer in AYSO. I have often been a parent volunteer in their schools and sports teams.
As my children leave the nest, and I have
more time to spend, I want to further engage in community activities that enhance my home city of San Jose.
Arts and artists are often overlooked or taken for granted.Arts programs are usually the first to be cut in schools when budget cuts loom. Arts degrees are not known for high paying jobs, and people who spend time in the arts may be seen as non-productive especially in our 'productivity' charged tech world in Silicon Valley.
As Arts Commissioner, I
want to spend my time and energy on the following: Get acquainted with the varied art forms our diverse community brings to us and to advocate for them and support them in their endeavors.
Help bring community awareness to the publicly available arts events and increase attendance at various art events in San Jose.
Explore avenues to bring art to
schools, and underserved communities. Find amateur artists in our midst and expand exposure and access e.g. artists that belong to groups such as Urban Sketchers Manjiri Yeravadekar
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I have always been a (amateur) creative person, and art in some form or another usually helps bring calm and serenity in the high stress world of tech in which I have earned a living.
The forms of art I have pursued are painting, knitting, music (vocal, instrumental), gardening. I have an older sister in India who is pursuing art as a profession and has struggled to be taken seriously, find encouragement, and financial support. I have seen up close how difficult it is to find venues to display art, advertise exhibits etc. It would be in honor of her struggles that I would like to play a part as arts commissioner to advocate and support other such artists in San Jose. I am ready to step up and step into a role that would allow me to advocate for the artists in San Jose and the art community here.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
I have been a very involved parent volunteer in my children's elementary school. For 5 straight years, I chaired the fund raising committee at Dilworth Elementary School in West San Jose. This was the largest yearly event in the school raising over $100K. Part of the funds were allocated to arts and music programs. I volunteer regularly with ReadingPartners - a children's literacy program. (readingpartners.org) I volunteer regularly with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. (shfb.org) I am a MasterGarderner of Santa Clara County (https://mgsantaclara.ucanr.edu) My experience in each one of these has been fulfilling and intense satisfaction for giving my time for the benefit of the community. There were challenges to overcome in working with so many diverse people, but the exchange of ideas and time spent on a shared good always brought beneficial results.
Manjiri Yeravadekar
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social, Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
I have 30 years of full time work experience. I have also volunteered in many roles over the years. Even when I was at my busiest with full time work in tech and raising two children and maintaining a home, I made time to volunteer in various ways. I have always valued community involvement and have tried to give my time and energy for my community in many different ways.
At work as a technical program manager, and in volunteering, a common theme is the acquisition and analysis of information to build consensus among teams, and to advocate and implement the ideas that best serve the interests of the people within the organization (in this case the city, the artists, and the city's residents).
I have a 30
year career in tech. as a very successful program manager in large companies like HP, Apple, and Google. I have been responsible for on time and quality delivery of large programs such as the Apple iPad, Google Nest Thermostats, HP desktops etc. Twenty years ago, I transitioned from software development to program management because I wanted to work with people, help people do their jobs better by organizing information and guiding decisions, and to help companies deliver great products to the market.
I bring all of my
organizational and leadership experience, problem solving skills, consensus building, and attention to detail to the position of arts commissioner.
I volunteered as Chairperson of the
fundraising committee at Dilworth Elementary school for 5 years. I worked with a diverse team of parent and teacher volunteers to plann and execute the yearly fundraiser - many of these funds went to arts and music programs. A large part of the role was dealing with budgets, being detailed oriented, getting the best from volunteers who have otherwise busy lives.
I have been volunteering with ReadingPartners (reading partners.org) for many years.
This is a non profit org that seeks to help elementary school children who are falling behind grade level in reading so that they can be successful in middle and high school. As a volunteer, I am expected to work with a diverse set of children one on one, collaborate with the site representative on the preset materials and provide feedback. I have been volunteering with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley for the past few years. This is a labor of love to provide food boxes to those who are food insecure.
For several years I volunteered as
team parent when my children played Little League baseball and AYSO soccer. Again, the role was to work with the parents and children to provide the children and community the best possible experience.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? I understand that the arts commission is comprised of representatives from each district in San Jose who collectively counsel and advise the city council on how best to support public arts and cultural programs in the city of San Jose. The city council makes final decisions.
The
arts commissioners -
- counsel the city council in how to best support public arts programs in the city - advise the city council in how to fund arts in the city by reviewing art acquisitions, grant applications, public arts programs
- advocate for the arts within the larger budget of
the city council - serve as liaisons between the City’s arts programs, programs of adjacent communities, and arts organizations.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Pandemic recovery - the arts and artists suffered during the COVID pandemic as shows and programs were canceled, gathering in public was banned, and people were reluctant to pay for anything but basic necessities as jobs suffered in general. While we are a few years past the pandemic, the consequences of such an unprecedented and large disaster are far reaching; continuing to help artists to recover from the pandemic is very important.
Support
artists of color or economically deprived artists to know how to apply for grants, make connections and bring their art to the public eye.
Bring artists communities together and
integrate their experiences - San Jose is a tremendously diverse place and has unique challenges, especially being surrounded by technology and tech related growth. The council can help with ideas for how to make all communities feel included and seen. Arts are a great way of cultivating the feeling of belonging.
Manjiri Yeravadekar
Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe recent San José arts activities you have participated in during the last twelve months (up to five activities) and what drew you to attend? Pune sister city photo exhibition - I am originally from Pune, India and have called San Jose my home since 1998. I was proud to visit the Pune-SJ sister city photo exhibit recently and it was a fun evening to view the photos of Pune and mingle with folks from both sides.
Christmas in the park - This has been a family tradition for many years. My children are older now but always loved the gaiety and holiday spirit of Christmas in the Park.
Tech Museum -
The tech museum is a favorite with the many activities and displays. It was even the venue for my son's winter formal this year.
BAGI (Bay Area Glass Institute) - I have taken classes at BAGI and bought glass art from them as gifts for friends. I am intending to take more glassblowing and other glass art classes with them in the coming year.
Children's discovery
museum - My children have spent many exploratory hours at the Children's discovery museum. We have gifted memberships to friends as gifts for their children to enjoy.
Happy
hollow park and zoo - My children have spent many happy hours in this park. We have hosted and attended birthday parties here as well.
Question applies to
Arts Commission
Describe the ways in which you believe the arts bring value to the general community.
Art is an expression of our humanity. Art helps us live better. It can bring joy. Art is used as therapy. Art can provoke deep thought. Art helped us get through the pandemic - if not for the endless movies, shows, music, podcasts etc, it would have been unbearable. The language of art is universal and it can bring diverse communities together. San Jose is a hugely diverse city. In a world that is so divided today, art can be a common bonding experience. We can learn about each others' cultures through art and once you know a culture or people, it's much easier to understand their perspectives.
A beautifully designed
garden (e.g. the Japanese Gardens in Saratoga) can be a space for meditation and peace.
Music is a wonderful accompaniment in joy, sadness, and everything in between. The San Jose Jazz festival has always been a fun event.
Photographs can convey the details of a
culture and bring a community together - in evidence is the Pune-San Jose sister city photo exhibit recently at city hall.
Quilts, knits, and other crafts perpetuate the traditions and history of so many native cultures. The San Jose museum of quilts and textiles was a quaint find one lazy afternoon many years ago.
Art takes so many forms and we take so many for
granted in our daily busy lives. The artists themselves who are passionate about their creations need our support and advocacy to make the connection between their creation and our joy.
Question applies to
Arts Commission
Should the City of San José have an active role in arts and cultural development? If so, in what ways and why?
Yes, absolutely. The City has a huge role to play in arts and cultural development.
The City is
in a position to offer grants of scale to arts programs.
Artists and arts groups can easily find a
central place to apply for grants and other help that the city may be able to offer.
The arts
bring money to the city via museums, art galleries, performances, San Jose ice, Christmas in the park etc. Restaurants, shops and other businesses also benefit from tourists coming in to the consume the arts on offer in the city.
The city can take a holistic view of the need and
ensure that diversity is respected, minorities are represented, and there is a variety of art forms that receive support.
Manjiri Yeravadekar

Question applies to
Arts Commission
How can you contribute to advising City Council on policy and programs related to cultural development in San José?
As Arts Commissioner I want to support and advocate for all of the arts community in San Jose.
I have an artistically rich background and along with my deep experience in tech, volunteering, and as a Master Gardener of Santa Clara County, I bring a unique perspective to this role.
I would like to work with the commission on access to the arts for all of San Jose, bringing with it economic development, and an expanding participation of the entire community.
Many residents in San Jose are unaware of the availability of arts and arts programs in the city. I would like to help bring this awareness not only to the artists who can benefit from the economic support for the arts but also to the community at large to benefit from consuming the arts on offer and enriching their lives.
Anything else you would like us to know?
I have long been a student and a consumer of various forms of art in San Jose and around the Bay Area. With my children in college this year, I am in a position to dedicate some of my time to working for the city of San Jose which I have called home for over 25 years. In addition to Arts, I am deeply interested in helping ameliorate food insecurity and food waste and hope to find the appropriate avenues to do so.
I very much believe that art is an integral
part of a well balanced community. I have many creative pursuits and could not imagine my life without being involved in and consuming art.
Thank you so much for considering my
application and I hope to be able to serve the arts commission as a representative of district

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
I have been active with the San Jose downtown affairs
When I served on the Appeals Hearing
Board, we constituted a body where residents can go and express their objections to a decision made by the City..
We usually carefully reviewed the submitted facts, and heard arguments from both sides, and tried to
reach a fair decision most beneficial to the
community.

The City should promptly and fairly address the proper

The City should promptly help property owners
to remove graffiti, specially common and repeating in the downtown area, which contributes to the negative perception of the neighborhood.

I want to do everything I can to help improve my adoptive city. For San Jose to thrive, it needs a vibrant downtown, which starts with parking. My long term experience living and being active in this city, specifically in the downtown core would let me bring and understanding and perspective to the commission of the needs issues and diversity of the city residents. I also understand the issues of property owners and developers in dealing with the complexities of the planning and development process in the city.
Being active for so long and dealing with all the departments in the city has given me a unique perspective in realizing that all the stakeholders have issues and input that must be listened to to make a fair and educated recommendation to the council.
My objective as a
commissioner is to bring this to the commission and work with the other commissioners so as a commission we can meet the expectations of the council and the citizens of the city. I have experience with this from my 20+ years active with the development projects in the city, plan proposals, action plans and 6 years on the Historic Landmarks Commission.
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I have spent over two decades dedicated to the development of the city in housing, transportation and economic progress and look forward to continuing this passion on the commission. I have been purchasing distressed historic properties since 2007 and currently have 5 in San JOse. Three are designated Landmars and two are Structures of Merit. I am hands on and do most of the preservation work myself. I am a preservationist first and have never sold a property but preserve them for the next generation. This gives me a unique insight into properties and projects coming to the commision.

masters in Public Administration (MPA)

Bruck at SJSU with a concentration of courses from the Engineering Department and Environmental Studies Department with my final project looking at Sustainability Issues and Solar Power.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Commission is an advisory board to the council. It needs to listen to the projects and issues brought to it, look at all the information and listen to the people that come before it to make an educated and balanced recommendation.
It deals with issues concerning the
general plan and plans for future development of the city within its boundaries. It deals with land use issues including zoning issues, designated land use amendments and subdivision map issues and EIR's. The commission addresses and makes recommendations on capital improvement projects all of which through the lense of historic preservation.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
One issue is environmental justice to find a balance in dealing with issues that affect the citizenry without taking advantage of the less fortunate or those without a strong voice.
It
needs to find common ground between development to help move the city forward and protecting resources that are not replaceable but not sacrificing city development for those resources that are marginal.
Finally we need to recognize and act on the importance of smart development, transportation and environmental issues all of which work together to make a strong city develop as a place people want to live and stimulate economic development by attracting businesses and investors.

I want to be a member of this commission due to passionate ideas I have for amending culture and social style in San Jose for the better of all it's residents. As I member, I can bring my dedication, passion, and hardworking ethics to the table and provide a perspective that is very different from many students due to my diverse background. One of many objectives I have is to fix the homeless population in San Jose which has sky rocketed after our deadly pandemic. Another issue as a member/commissioner I would like to fix is the religious inequality in our city, racial discrimination can be very different than religious discrimination because religious discrimination comes from denying and abusing someone's beliefs. Lastly, I would like to provide a much more improved and coordinated AIM for the Youth Commission this year where we have a much more diverse and organized group of speakers and audience for our youth.
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I believe that I have some very important skills such as public speaking, argumentation, leadership, teamwork, and policy drafting that can be usefully applied to the Youth Commission. I have 8 years of Speech and Debate practice which has taught me much about advocating for myself and others. I worked with the Santa Clara County and the State Department to draft bills and propositions for election ballots and proposals to present the governor.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
As a member of the District 4 Youth Advisory Commission, my experience was very educational and memorable. I was able to meet such intellectual individuals with such progressive mindsets that are advocates for change such as myself and that was refreshing.
I was able to learn so much by conversing with people from different backgrounds and I learned more about how law is facilitated on a city level. Most of all, I was so happy to advocate for the issues I am passionate about and have the ablity to initiate change.
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social, Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The purpose of the commission is to provide representation and voice to the youth of San Jose so that their issues are also looked at and solved. The commission advocates and writes policy for the city about the issues they would like to see changed/solved in our community.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Poverty, Racial/Religious discrimination, and financial struggles What is the purpose of historic preservation in San José and what is the role of the Historic Landmarks Commission in achieving that purpose? The purpose of this commission is to ensure that along with San Jose globalizing and urbanizing quite rapidly, the historic landmarks of San Jose are being preserved.
Please explain your prior experience with historic preservation, with San José’s public planning processes, and in working with City or other public agency staff.
My prior experience with historic preservation was when I was on the youth commission. I was working to ensure that students and schools were prioritizing the Native American literature in US History classes from the start, beginning with elementary school. Speaking with school teachers and students, explaining to them land acknowledgements were always super important to me

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
The housing crisis in California is deeply personal to me. Since moving to California in 2017, I have experienced firsthand the profound challenges many residents face in securing safe, stable, and affordable housing. I have moved over 12 times, often on the verge of homelessness, and have been forced to live in unsafe and overcrowded conditions despite working multiple jobs. These experiences have shaped my commitment to addressing housing production and affordability issues and fueled my passion for finding real solutions.
My professional work at the Housing Action Coalition, a nonprofit dedicated to building housing at all income levels, has allowed me to transform my personal struggles into meaningful advocacy and action. At HAC, I contribute to efforts to alleviate the Bay Area and California's housing production, displacement, and affordability crises. This work has provided me with a deep understanding of the complexities of housing policy, from regulatory barriers to the importance of community engagement, and the importance of creating equitable solutions that benefit all residents. As a member of the Housing Commission, I would be eager to focus on several key areas that I believe are crucial to advancing our housing goals. I am particularly excited to work on the implementation of the Housing Element, which is a foundational component of our local housing strategy.
Additionally, I am committed to supporting the effective rollout of state legislation, such as SB 4. There are significant opportunities in reforming the permitting and streamlining processes, which can remove unnecessary barriers to building new homes. Another key focus of mine would be in improving the Urban Village process as it represents a tremendous opportunity to create vibrant, mixed-use communities that offer both housing and amenities.
Finally, I want to prioritize the development of transit-oriented communities that maximize access to public transportation and reduce our reliance on cars, fostering sustainable growth and equitable access to housing for all residents. With my years of experience in advocating for housing and contributing to the ease of our housing crisis, I am thrilled by the possibility of bringing my personal experiences and professional expertise to the Housing Commission.

I have worked in multiple sectors inside and outside government, including at the Assembly and City Council level. These experiences have prepared me to support constituents and make difficult policy decisions. I also have experience working with and for labor unions, where I developed an understanding of how we can protect and develop our workforce.
Finally, in my current role, I function as liaison between business, government, and labor, finding a balance between all interests in the effort to promote housing affordability. I also have a deep understanding of what it takes to make housing pencil, while trying to prioritize affordability and living wages for workers.

What is the purpose of historic preservation in San José and what is the role of the Historic Landmarks Commission in achieving that purpose? San José aims to protect and maintain buildings, sites, and districts with historical, cultural, or architectural significance.
The Historic Landmarks Commission works to achieve the
aforementioned goals by advising the City Council on preservation matters, reviewing applications affecting historic resources, analyzing design standards, guiding policy development, and collaborating with stakeholders to protect the city's heritage.
Please explain your prior experience with historic preservation, with San José’s public planning processes, and in working with City or other public agency staff.
I have been very engaged with historic preservation at the local and state level. While understanding
its purpose, historic preservation can also be weaponized for jurisdictions to avoid state housing law. I recently supported AB 2580 (Wicks), which is awaiting the Governor's signature. If signed, AB 2580 would create greater transparency, specifically requiring local governments to monitor how new historic designations could impact their ability to meet housing needs under existing state law, and report new historic buildings and districts to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) during the Annual Progress Report of the Regional Housing Needs Assessment process.

What experience do you have with affordable housing issues? I have experience advocating for affordable housing. I am very familiar with AMI levels and the need for all levels of affordability.
I also have experience advocating for funding for
affordable housing. The funding can be extremely complicated because generally there are multiple funding sources, and delays to projects can be catastrophic to funding timelines.
Question applies to
Housing and Community Development Commission
Please explain your familiarity with the Community Development Block Grant Program?
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program in San José is a federal program that provides funding to support low and moderate income residents. The funds are used for:
1) Affordable Housing: Building and maintaining affordable homes. 2) Public Services:
Supporting services like job training, health care, and services for the homeless. 3)
Community Improvements: Upgrading parks, recreation centers, and infrastructure in underserved areas.
4) Economic Development: Helping small businesses and creating jobs in low-income areas. The program focuses on local needs to improve residents' quality of life, especially in underserved communities.

How would you use your experience with homelessness to inform your work on the Commission?
At my time working at Working Partnerships USA, in partnership with the County, I ran a team that provided support to residents during the pandemic. During the pandemic many families were one check away from becoming homeless. In order to support clients, I became very familiar with tenant protections (which San José has always been a leader on), as well as food and rent resources. This experience reinforced my understanding of the immediate needs of vulnerable communities and the vital importance of safety nets and support systems for those at risk of losing their homes. As a member of the Housing Commission, I am eager to use my lived experience and professional background to advocate for those on the brink of housing instability. I will draw on my understanding of tenant protections, support services, and housing policy to inform my decisions and priorities on the Commission.

Library and Education Commission
What involvement have you had in library and/or early education issues? In my professional journey, I’ve had the privilege of engaging deeply with both library and education issues through various roles and initiatives.
In the library sector, I have been
involved in various volunteer roles, where I worked on improving library services, developing adult literacy programs, and organizing community outreach events. This experience allowed me to contribute to enhancing access to information and building stronger bonds within the community. For example, I spearheaded a summer writing workshop for ELLs, which has successfully provided additional skill development for those members of our community trying to improve their language skills.
In the realm of education, my
involvement has been centered around expanding civic education within the community. I’ve collaborated with educators and local libraries to provide opportunities for community members to gain further knowledge about the foundations of American government, history, and an understanding of the civic process. In addition, I have been teaching for 10+ years in local schools.
Both of these experiences have underscored the importance of accessible resources and quality early education in fostering lifelong learning and development. I am committed to continuing my work in these areas and look forward to exploring new opportunities to support and enhance library and early education initiatives.

I'm eager to serve on the COC and make a real difference in our community. The positive changes brought by Measure T, especially the improved street infrastructure and safer streets, have been impressive. However, I'm also aware of concerns about ensuring these funds are used wisely. As a commissioner, I would focus on two key objectives: 1. Boosting Public Confidence: With faith in government declining, I aim to change that narrative. My goal would be to ensure these funds are used exactly as voters intended and approved.
Tangible results, like those I've seen in my neighborhood, can help rebuild trust in our civic institutions. 2. Keeping Projects on Track: I'll closely monitor our Measure T initiatives to ensure smooth progress. By regularly checking project timelines and status, we can ensure our community sees real results. I'll also advocate for clear, frequent updates to keep the City Council on pending projects and projects completed.

What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? The Measure T COC serves three crucial functions:
1. Fiscal Accountability: It ensures
Measure T funds are used strictly in accordance with voter-approved purposes. This involves review of expenditures to maintain public trust. 2. Financial Oversight: The COC is responsible for forwarding audits of Measure T Bonds Financial Statements to the City Council. It also ensures the annual report from the Director of Finance, detailing bond issuances and tax collections, is properly communicated. 3. Project Monitoring: The commission tracks the progress of Measure T-funded projects, providing regular status updates to the City Council. This helps ensure projects stay on track and deliver the promised benefits to the community.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Homelessness: Addressing the escalating homelessness crisis is paramount. Over the past 5- 7 years, visible encampments have proliferated across the city, posing challenges not only in terms of public health and safety but also impacting the soul of our community. Finding compassionate and effective solutions is essential to restoring a sense of well-being for all residents.
Crime: There has been a noticeable increase in crime since 2019, impacting everyday activities such as shopping at local stores where security measures have been heightened. Items being locked behind glass shelves not only inconvenience residents but also degrade & erode public trust. We must find ways to enhance public safety without compromising our quality of life.
Downtown Revitalization: San Jose lacks a vibrant
downtown that attracts both residents and visitors. Many of my friends seek entertainment elsewhere, despite living here for years. A thriving downtown would boost the local economy and instill civic pride.
What is the purpose of historic preservation in San José and what is the role of the Historic Landmarks Commission in achieving that purpose? Please explain your prior experience with historic preservation, with San José’s public planning processes, and in working with City or other public agency staff.

Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Certainly, here are three key issues facing the City of San Jose that I believe the Council should address: 1. Housing Affordability and Homelessness Issue: San Jose continues to grapple with high housing costs and a significant homeless population. The lack of affordable housing options places a heavy burden on low- and middle-income residents and exacerbates homelessness.
Recommendation: The Council should prioritize affordable housing initiatives by increasing funding for affordable housing projects, streamlining the permitting process for affordable units, and exploring public-private partnerships to develop mixed-income housing. Additionally, enhancing support services for the homeless, such as job training, mental health services, and temporary housing solutions, is essential. 2.
Infrastructure and Transportation Issue: Aging infrastructure and inadequate transportation options are major concerns for San Jose residents. Potholes, deteriorating roads, and limited public transit options affect the quality of life and economic vitality of the city.
Recommendation: The Council should invest in comprehensive infrastructure improvements, focusing on repairing and upgrading roads, bridges, and public transit systems. Expanding and improving public transportation networks, including bus and light rail services, can reduce traffic congestion and provide more sustainable commuting options. Implementing smart city technologies can also enhance infrastructure efficiency and maintenance. 3.
Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Issue: Ensuring the safety and security of residents is a fundamental responsibility of the city. San Jose faces challenges related to crime, emergency response times, and preparedness for natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods.
Recommendation: The Council should enhance public safety measures by increasing funding for police, fire, and emergency medical services. Investing in modern equipment and training for first responders can improve response times and effectiveness. Additionally, developing comprehensive disaster preparedness plans, conducting regular community drills, and investing in resilient infrastructure can help mitigate the impact of natural disasters. Addressing these issues will require a collaborative effort between the Council, community members, and various stakeholders. By focusing on these critical areas, the City of San Jose can improve the quality of life for its residents and build a more sustainable and resilient future.

Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
I like to bring people together and help them get involved with Fun activities, like organizing Summer Picnic, Christmas Hayride, motivating them to leave their houses during their free time and engage into sports, community events, etc., so they can let go any sadness they may have in their lives and they can allow room for positivity, make new friends as well along the way. I think helping on Parks and Recreation Commission will be in-line with what I already have been doing in my neighborhood (Eden) so far. I will get to know more on these areas which will enable me to spread happiness and positive energy further into the lives of our people around.
Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I moved into Early Childhood Education area as full-time work by 2021. Prior to that, I worked into IT field for around 25 years, last 16 years of that have been into Engineering Leadership positions with companies like eBay, IBM, Target, etc. There were two aspects common at the core of these positions: A) Leadership and B) People Management. They helped me become someone who can work with anyone and everyone. I learned to recognize the importance of Diversity into our lives, without which, America would never be as good a country to live in, as it is today!
Once I quit working for others and got into owning
schools, my leadership and my ability to delicate a work, allowed me to scale further and have time to help my neighborhood, which is Eden (surrounded by San Tomas, Payne, Winchester and Williams streets). I made efforts to bring the residents of my neighborhood together. Thought of initiatives and common areas of interests, like sports activities, motivating them to help the Eden Neighborhood Association (ENA) Board organize various events throughout the year, helped the residents understand that all of these fun events are for them, so we need their active participation as well! Created groups of active volunteers who are ready to help the community anytime now, be it a Dumpster Day, Clean up our streets, distributing printed monthly newsletters across 875 households here, etc.

Please describe your experience in serving on a Commission or Board.
I have been serving as Vice President of Eden Neighborhood Association (ENA) Board since over 2.5 years. Have been joining the San Jose District 1 meetings (Board Meetings and the General Meetings), following the Mayor and Vice Mayor with their updates via their newsletters, social media updates and public gatherings, etc. With these, I have been learning a lot on what is happening in my city and what are the focus areas of my City Leaders.
Ashesh Singh
Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social, Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
- Leadership, - People Management, - Ability to organize anything, say, an event, - Planning, Execution and Evaluating the effectiveness of an initiative, course-correction, when needed, - Ability to motivate others (for a common cause), - Ability to make life-time friends anywhere and everywhere.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? As I am told, looking for areas where more parks and recreational spaces can be built, ensuring documentation, effective usage, maintenance and cleanliness of these assets so city residents can leverage all the benefits intended behind the city making these investments.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
- City needs more parks, we do not have enough - City needs more of (free / affordable) grounds / courts for fast emerging sports in United States, like PickleBall, Badminton, etc. - Ensure our residents are able to use our available parks and recreational assets effectively by deterring bad actors among us misusing those places, addressing homelessness there, etc.
What is the purpose of historic preservation in San José and what is the role of the Historic Landmarks Commission in achieving that purpose? With my limited knowledge at this time (with intention to learn a lot more in coming time), I think it will be about being able to keep track of everything that falls into our definition of historic landmarks, document every important details about them and using our available resources to preserve and maintain them so our residents can make use of them by visiting there more regularly and appreciate what we already have in our beautiful city.
Please explain your prior experience with historic preservation, with San José’s public planning processes, and in working with City or other public agency staff.
I will be a new comer in this area but as mentioned above, I am a fast learner, I expect to catch up with details quickly and be worthy of my team.

Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
Please describe your experience in working with governmental agencies.
I only have experience as consumer so far. As mentioned above, I own Childcare Centers, one in Union City, CA, called Adventure Montessori Academy, which is licensed for 60 kids and one in Auburn, CA, called Bells Preschool & Childcare, also licensed for 60 kids. For my Union City school, I have been working with City of Union City from last 3 years on permit to expand my school to 96 kids capacity since the property I own there is pretty big (0.69 acre).
The permit was approved by planning commission on February this year. That was my experience working with various department of the City Planning. I also work with State / California Department of Social Services (CDSS) closely since they issue state license for Childcare Center owners like me, to operate.
There are also many public agencies who pay
for parents who don't have enough resources. I partner with them and help these parents (like, Single Mom, etc), get paid by State via those public agencies.
Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
As a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, how would you handle a situation where you have a volatile
Community group which is opposed to a staff
proposal?
I believe the underlying issue behind a majority of conflicts, is lack of communication, lack of effective dialogues, or not being carried out in a right tone with clean and constructive mind set, that was needed to be done. If approached properly, discussion can be initiated and hence, I will be able to deal with this group in a professional manner. I do understand, not every demand can be fulfilled, but talks done in such a way that the other party feels they are heard properly and here I am, really trying to find a good middle ground with benefiting my city residents being my only interest, should lead me to find a good resolution there.
Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
Can you provide examples of major public policy issues that you have been involved in and what your role was in the issue?
This will be my first opportunity to volunteer and serve with a government agency. As for my experience being on the other side of the table, I provided suggestions to public agencies who provide for needy parents for their daycare needs and many a times they accepted my inputs for process changes at their end. On my Union City school expansion project as well, I do have quite a few ideas on how can this painful process of 3 years, just to get verbal approval from Planning Commission (to move to construction phase) can be cut down from 3 years to probably a year or year and a half. This will benefit Small (& Medium) Business owners like me, who want to serve the community more by services we offer, create more jobs, etc. Being an outsider, an applicant and also not being a resident of Union City, I did not know how to really influence those folks from the Commission with suggestions I had, but I am willing to, if I get an opportunity.

Anything else you would like us to know?
I have good success stories, right from my school days, being the topper of my class, getting into best possible engineering college of the country I was born in (India), working with top tier IT companies on engineering leadership positions, run my schools so efficiently (with my HR Policy being so simple, Respect Each Other), successfully serving Eden Neighborhood Association on second term of Vice President (Board's likely choice as President will be myself, once current President finishes his second 2 year team), influencing 100s of residents of Eden Neighborhood on the power of being together, benefits of never feeling alone, take care each other, continue to have fun and good time (among each other), being a fast learner, I think I will do well in this Commission.
