Approved Date 2/12/2025

RECOMMENDATION

Forward a recommendation to the City Council to approve a grant to the Rotary Club of San Jose Foundation to support their Enterprise Leadership Conference in the amount of $2,500.

BACKGROUND

Pursuant to City Council Expenditure and Reimbursement Policy, Policy Number 0-38, Section K “Grants,” Item 6 “Any contribution to an organization proposed by the Mayor or a Councilmember who is a member of, or receiving services from, that organization must be approved in advance by the City Council.” I am a member of the San Jose Rotary Club.

Approval is requested to expend $2,500 from the budgeted District 9 SAP allocation to support the Rotary Club of San Jose Foundation for their Enterprise Leadership Conference (ELC).

Foundation funds are used to support community service projects that improve health, provide quality education, and improve the environment.

• ELC is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that teaches high school juniors how to conceptualize an idea for a product or service, develop it, write a business plan and then present it to a panel of judges (similar to the TV show “Shark Tank”) • ELC is a 3-day workshop held at Asilomar Conference Grounds and created exclusively for motivated and outgoing juniors from public and private schools including schools within ESUSD, SJUSD, CUHSD.
• Students work in 12, 8-person teams to develop their idea for a product or service. Each team is accompanied by 2 Rotarians that serve as mentors and facilitators for the students.
