Re: Support for Item 8.1 - Renovations of Excite Ballpark Dear Mayor Mahan and Honorable Councilmembers,
On behalf of the San Jose Chamber of Commerce, I am pleased to submit this letter in support of the proposed capital improvements between the City of San Jose and DBH, LLC for Excite Ballpark. The Chamber is committed to supporting the infrastructure to create a world-class sports and entertainment economy in San Jose, and supporting the San Jose Giants is an important piece of that network.
The capital improvements proposed include a new clubhouse, batting cage, netting and shade structures, as well as upgrades to the playing field and dugouts. New facilities represent a $20 million investment from DBH to bring the stadium into compliance with Major League Baseball's Player Development League standards. In addition, the updated stadium can be a community asset serving as a venue for concerts, sports camps, and community events. Lastly, we applaud the joint decision of DBH and the City to look utilize the improvements as a tool for additional revenues through additional seating, expanded food and beverage options, hosting alternative events, utilizing the parking lot for outside events, and additional advertising opportunities.
This lease amendment is crucial for the long-term viability of the San Jose Giants and the continued use of Excite Ballpark as a community asset. The proposed changes ensure that the stadium will meet modern standards while providing economic benefits to both DBH and the City of San Jose.
Sincerely,
Leah Toeniskoetter

[External Email. Do not open links or attachments from untrusted sources. Learn morel Some people who received this message don't often get email from Learn why this is important Regarding the Lease Extension and Improvements Agreement for SJ Municipal Stadium: Please ensure the agreement does not place any limitations on the City's ability to fully implement its Vision Zero Plan and Bike Plan on adjacent corridors.
San Jose Municipal Stadium is within a mile of at least four Vision Zero corridors: South 10th/11th Street, Senter Road, Story/Keyes Road, and Monterey Road. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians accessing the ballpark are likely to take 1-2 of those corridors.
The stadium is also adjacent to three key bicycle routes identified in the Better Bike Plan 2025: East Alma Avenue, Senter Road, and a future off-street extension of the Three Creeks Trail. The intersections at Alma & Senter, Alma & 10th, Senter & Phelan, and 10th & Phelan are critical both for bicyclists, and for pedestrians walking between the Park and Ride lot, the VTA bus stops, San Jose Municipal Stadium, the SJSU facilities, Kelley Park, etc.
Please make sure that the final agreement does not place any limitations on the City's ability to fully implement its Vision Zero Plan and Bike Plan on the aforementioned corridors. The city must retain its ability to create new protected facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, lower vehicle speeds, and lower speed limits, even if it potentially means reducing vehicle lanes or otherwise decreasing max vehicle throughout.
It would be fantastic if the agreement were to commit both parties to work together to upgrade East Alma Avenue (at least between Senter and 10th), Senter Road (at least between Alman and Phelan), and upgrade those intersections to fully protected intersections. These changes would encourage people to bike/walk and take transit along those routes in order to visit the stadium and many other nearby recreation areas. The stadium and surrounding facilities could become much better multi-modal destinations.
Finally, it would be great if the parties could commit to giving some TLC to the VTA 73 bus stop at the corner of Senter and Alma [1]. Though the 73 bus itself is a high ridership line, this particular stop seems to be underutilized [2] despite being outside a stadium. This could be due to the narrow sidewalk, missing stop amenities, and/or no direct ingress/egress between the stop and the stadium (and also no wayfinding for the most-direct route). The stadium could potentially increase its transit ridership by making the stop more obvious and more appealing.
