Subject: March 25th Agenda item 7.1, "Report on the City Charter Regarding Parks" [External Email. Do not open links or attachments from untrusted sources. Learn more] Some people who received this message don't often get email from Learn why this is important Dear Mayor Mahan, Councilmember Doan and Members of the City Council, The D7 Leadership group represents the neighborhood associations and involved residents of District 7, and our mission is to advocate for a safer, cleaner and more beautiful community.
We support the definition of charter parks as written in the Director Jon Cicirelli's report and we appreciate the effort that has gone into this report. As you know, the Coyote Creek trail and Coyote Creek Park Chain runs through the length of D7, and we are pleased to see that not only the current parks, but also the Coyote Creek Trail, Los Lagos Golf Course and our three community centers are included in this definition.
However we do have several questions/concerns that we would like to see addressed.
How will the 24 foot restriction for trails affect maintenance in the areas where the trail is much wider than this limit? An example is where the trail splits at Yerba Buena and Grandbrook Ave, just past the Singleton landfill and before the switchbacks heading into Hellyer park.. (Possibly Mile 15 1/2 - the sign was vandalized and has not been replaced) The land extends at least 60 feet on either side of the trail. It has natural vegetation, and is currently maintained by PRNS. Will PRNS still maintain this land or will this become another border that residents need to navigate and advocate for? Will the entirety of Kelley Park be chartered including the undeveloped part on the eastern side of the park near Roberts Road? Because this area is undeveloped we want to be sure that this area of the park is protected. We would not support any long-term repurposing of this section that would make it not a park.
Will the possible closure of Ramblewood School affect Ramblewood Park? We believe (but have not confirmed) that Franklin-McKinley School District leases the land for the school from the park and we are wondering if this will have any affect on the park.
Will Mariposa Park become a Chartered Park when the transaction between CalTrans and the city is concluded? We understand that Mariposa Park in the Tropicana-Lanai neighborhood is not considered a Chartered Park, because it is currently owned by CalTrans, but that is in the process of being acquired by the city according to the Chartered Park list?
What about undeveloped park land and future parks?
At the northern end of D7 along Coyote Creek is an unused parcel of land called Coyote Meadows. It is our hope that someday this land that surrounds the Coyote Creek Trail and the future Five Wounds Trail will become part of the Coyote Creek Park Chain. We would not expect this land to be designated as a Chartered Park, but we are hoping that it will be preserved for a future park And there are other parcels of land in D7 and others throughout the city that neighbors are hoping might become a park someday and we wonder if this definition of chartered parks supports and protects future development of new parks, or if language needs to be added for this purpose.
The members of the D7 Leadership Group care deeply about our parks, trails, community centers and the open space of Los Lagos Golf Course and we urge the City Council to accept the report which we believe will protect these natural and important community areas.
Thank you,
Alie Victorine

Save and protect our parks, both current and planned, plus public golf courses used by seniors and children.
Our city has wonderful parks and golf courses. Please do your best to ensure they are well maintained and preserved.
Support chartered parks and include protection for parks not yet developed due to lack of funding. There are planned park sites that are still awaiting funding.
Our public lands currently used as recreational golf spaces used by children and seniors must also be protected. Protect this public opportunity.
To this end, please ensure the following lands are protected:
1. The City owns the land (fee title) or has unrestricted access through an easement in perpetuity, and a. The land has been (or is planned to be) improved with recreational or park amenities, whether passive or active, AND/OR
b. The land is (or is planned to be) open to the public for public park purposes.
2. The land is currently used as a public golf course.
Please also direct staff to plan for any necessary Charter amendments necessary to fully accomplish this.
Protect Our Parks.
Sincerely,
Camilo Valderrama

Save and protect our parks, both current and planned, plus public golf courses used by seniors and children.
Hey look, we need to protect our valuable land that is used for parks and public golf courses. This includes both existing and any being planned. Once they are gone, there is no coming back! We need these valuable resources to provide a relief from the terrible situations brought upon us by people who think only about money and themselves and by politicians in government who could care less about our local environment. So please, makes sure your definition of parkland is consistent with the list included in this message below.

Please protect our parks and golf courses. Not only do they provide open space for everyone, but they also impact healthy lifestyle. Families use parks to gather with family and friends, celebrate, bbq, and other social events. When these open spaces are removed and replaced by dense housing, people have no place to go or congregate.
Golf courses and parks beautify and diversify the community as well. They uplift the morale and mental state of people.
Thank you for your consideration.

Do not open links or attachments from untrusted sources. Learn more] Dear San Jose City Council,
Save and protect our parks, both current and planned, plus public golf courses used by seniors and children.
As more families are forced to live in townhouses and apartments, public parks are vital for the parents and children to have a place to walk, run, play a game, ride a bike, breathe in fresh air, and see nature. I grew up in San Jose, when there were acres of orchards and farmland. I have witnessed the concrete and glass buildings taking over those acres, and I know that we have lost a great deal in terms of physical and emotional health, and knowing where we come from. Please keep and develop as many parks as possible as a partial restorative action for the families who live here today.
Sincerely,
Janet Souza Cervantes

Save and protect our parks, both current and planned, plus public golf courses used by seniors and children.
I do now and have for the past 50+ years walked and cycled extensively in the downtown area. I depend on our city, county and regional parks to keep me centered and healthy. I enjoy the open space, the long trails, the variety of plantings, the sounds and sights of the water features, the chance sightings of wildllife, encountering others engaging in wholesome activities, participating in planting, weeding, and clean-ups, etc.
I work on my own at helping keep these spaces clean and natural. I do not appreciate the artificial turf, neighbors feeding cats and not picking up after their dogs in our public spaces.
