RE: Item 8.6: 2026 Major Event Zone Ordinance
Dear Mayor Mahan and Honorable Councilmembers,
On behalf of the San Jose Chamber of Commerce, I am writing to express our support for the proposed 2026 Major Event Zone Ordinance. We believe this policy is a thoughtful, forward- looking step that will support our ability to successfully host global events.
Several major events in the coming year, including the Super Bowl, NCAA Regionals and FIFA World Cup games, present an extraordinary opportunity to showcase San Jose to the world.
With that comes the potential to attract new investments to our city and a significant boost from economic activity in hospitality, retail, transportation, and entertainment. The proposed ordinance provides a framework that balances safety, mobility, and public access with the operational needs of businesses and event organizers.
By creating a clear, consistent, and flexible process to manage temporary restrictions, the City is positioning itself to maximize the economic benefits for high-attendance gatherings. We especially appreciate that the ordinance protects public rights-of-way while encouraging participation from our local vendors at designated events. This kind of coordination is essential to ensuring that our downtown remains vibrant, welcoming, and capable of maximizing our full potential for upcoming events.
We urge your support of this ordinance and commend city staff for proactively planning for next year.
Sincerely,
Leah Toeniskoetter
