Interests & Experiences
High School, College, Professional, Vocational, or Other Schools Attended.
Please include Major or Field of Study, Dates Attended, Degree and Date of Degree.
I attended Downtown College Prep and Silver Creek High school and graduated in 2006. I went to Evergreen Valley College for a bit but was unable to complete my AA due to financial reasons. Since the age of 16 I have worked in some capacity with youth. My most recent occupation before Covid was Lead Coach for a program called Soccer Shots. They were able to pay for me to get my 12 Early Child Education units so I could coach soccer at preschools.
List any position or office held in any governmental agency, civic, or charitable organization including the dates.
My first job was with the city in 2004, working with the Parks and Rec Department as a Recreation Leader and we would meet on Fridays to discuss our professional growth goals. I believe the program is similar to if not the same program as San Jose Works. Afterwards, I worked for YMCA as a part time Rec Leader from 2006-08. I then worked under Enrique Flores for the YWCA as a Youth Specialist at different high schools in the Eastside District as an After School Instructor. Then, I completed a year at an Americorps program called Public Allies and was partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters. At Big Brothers Big Sisters, I was the Site Coordinator for 3 elementary schools and matched volunteer mentors with the children enrolled in the program. In 2012, I worked for Downtown College Prep High School as the boys and girls soccer team coach. They offered me the position of PE Teacher for the DCP Middle School. During the summer, I ran a camp for Santa Maria Urban Ministry for children in the Washington community. I then transitioned into working full time as a soccer coach for children and for the past 4 years I have been with Soccer Shots of the Bay Area. Currently because of Covid, I am no longer working there.

Special Awards or Recognitions Received
I have received special recognition in 2007 for my volunteer work at Washington United Youth Center. Also, I received special recognition while working with Public Allies because we organized a community event celebrating César Chávez at Gardner Community Center in 2010. More recently this past December, I was given the award for Coach of the Year for being one of the top coaches in the Bay Area for Soccer Shots.
Please state why you want to become a member of this Board or Commission including specific objectives which you would work toward as a member.
I am applying to the Parks and Recreation Commission because I want to make a difference in my community and with my knowledge and experience, I would be an asset for this commission. I am excited to work toward bringing relevant Parks and Recreation programs to the low income community. Growing up I was lucky to have such an active mother signing me up for programs in the city, but other friends in my area were not so lucky. Part of making a difference is learning the government process and applying it to better the San Jose community. I am eager to dip my toes in local government.

Please state any other information which you feel would be useful in reviewing your application
I am Mexican American and grew up in District 8 and District 5 and I am currently living in District 4. My application to this board comes at a time when the Black Lives Matter movement brought to light the lack of representation in San Jose. I am hopeful that I can be a part of the change that is necessary for the city I love.

Considering your experience and activities in business, labor, School, professional, social, Commissions, Boards, or other organizations, indicate the experience, training, knowledge and/or skills which qualify you for appointment.
I have worked with many different programs in San Jose that have either participated in city parks or have dealt with recreation in some capacity. I believe I can bring a different perspective to this commission. Not only have I lived in 3 different districts at one point but I have also done extensive volunteer work in District 3 and 6. Living and working in these different communities has given me the tools to interface with diverse community members.
My passion and love for this city is what drives me to want to make it better.
What is your understanding of the purpose of the Commission? My understanding of the Parks and Recreation Commission is that they advise the City Council on issues that have to deal with parks, playgrounds, recreation centers and facilities, and recreation programs, including community sports, plays, celebrations and other recreation activities. I am eager to find out how and what the City Council does with the advice taken from the commission.
Please list three issues facing the City that you feel the Council should address.
Most issues currently have to deal with Covid.
1) Creating new recreational programs for
children that come from low income households.
2) Keeping parks accessible for citizens
while creating a safe environment during Covid.
3) Running summer camp programs that
still follow safety protocols and keeping children safe and healthy while still having fun and incorporating physical fitness.
What is the purpose of historic preservation in San José and what is the role of the Historic Landmarks Commission in achieving that purpose? Please explain your prior experience with historic preservation, with San José’s public planning processes, and in working with City or other public agency staff.

Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
Please describe your experience in working with governmental agencies.
My experience working in government was my first job with the city as a Recreation Leader. I was solely involved in working directly with the children.
Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
As a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, how would you handle a situation where you have a volatile
Community group which is opposed to a staff
proposal?
I would listen to their concerns and try my best to answer any questions they have for the commission. If we as a commission believe that the concern is valid, then I would like to conduct an investigation into their claim and present the findings to the commission. I believe it is my duty to ensure we hear the voices of the unheard and try to make sure they are accurately represented in the commission.
Question applies to
Parks and Recreation Commission
Can you provide examples of major public policy issues that you have been involved in and what your role was in the issue?
I currently have not been involved in any major public policy.
Anything else you would like us to know?
My intentions for this commission are pure and out of love for my city, San Jose. I believe I can be a asset for this commission, but I am also aware that I am very new when it comes to local government. I believe my willingness to learn and soak up as much knowledge as I can, will counterbalance the fact that I am a beginner. I hope you can consider me for this commission.
