We are valley very low already, the tall buildings would have an effect on the climate. It would be less circulation in our little area of air, we lose many trees due to the buildings as well as views. People pay for that around this area , the views. The mobility downtown is bad as it is

The Catholic Church is not a building alone. It is the People who sit in pews in churches and halls and every kind of building around the world.

In my 85 years, Five Wounds Church, the building AND the people, has played a central role in my life. I was baptized there. I received my First Holy Communion there. I was Confirmed there. I married my husband of 67 years there. And my funeral will be there. My parents were married there; we held their funerals there. My grandmother's funeral was there. My children have received their sacraments there. Four generations of my family have crossed the threshold of Five Wounds Portuguese National Church since 1919.

The building that is Five Wounds Church is a living symbol. It is a symbol of immigrants who came to a new land who wanted to maintain a l ittle piece of their homeland and their language in their lives through the celebration of their faith with their families, friends, and fellow i mmigrants. Celebrating the milestones of their lives in community. Seeing those magnificent, red-topped towers from a distance give us p ause to think of those who came before and those who will come after us. Five Wounds Church is history writ large. A community's history. S an Jose's history that still lives today. Valuable in and of itself. Its prominent place in San Jose's skyline should not be diminished by b uildings 3X its height.

Sincerely,
Dolores Vieira

The Portuguese culture is a foundation of the south bay. It has been diluted over the past several years. The Five Wounds Urban Village Plan will help to keep (and rebuild) a culture that was foundational to our community. That history should be treated with the respect it deserves.

Don't change the new Five Wounds Village Plan.

This is going to take away from the beautiful skyline of Five wounds, which has been a staple in this community for decades. Everybody knows the church off of 101.

The added traffic around the church and that area is going to be horrible.

Can you imagine for weddings, funerals, any special event that you’re having at the church? The traffic is gonna be intense. We have a s chool directly impacted also.

There are better places to put these types of structures, and in areas that the already impacted streets cannot handle.

All the Housing being placed around Alum rock to White Rd to Mckee and back should be moved to the southside where there is more land a vailable. We keep cramming more and more houses into already dense neighborhoods.

My family opposes this building structure.

Sincerely,
Melissa lopez

The 120 foot height is good enough. I know the state is trying to pass bills that will end up bypassing the state level. But let the community atleast think they won by keeping it at 120 feet.

I appose 300 foot tall buildings at the 28th St., Little Portugal bart station. What should be built around the church? It should match architecture of the church. But not taller.

I have been a Parishiner at this church for many years. and I believe the current plan of the record of 120 foot tall policy should not change at all. this would be a very bad idea .
the five wounds Urban village plan and the neighborhood around it should continue staying the same way as it is now....I am against this p roposal for the building of the Bart station and High rises. I Believe this would cause a lot of traffic in this area..... there are other empty lots i n San Jose where you could build this .

Such massive buildings would overshadow one of San José’s most historic and culturally significant landmarks, changing the character of the neighborhood forever. This plan disregards the voices of Portuguese-American families who have built and sustained this neighborhood for generations. Oversized high-rises threaten to erase this identity and replace it with something unrecognizable, driven by profit rather than respect for history, culture, and people.

This new 300 foot was never on the table in the Plan that was developed and appoved, now VTA wants to change the city and community's long-standing plans and we have to just take it. Lets stick to the plan and not allow VTA call the shots for East San Jose's future. Look what they did with BRT and what that did to East San Jose, lets not let them to that to East San Jose again. Alum Rock has not recovered from the mess that they made of that failed project lets not do it again.

This was never part of the original plans. I feel that it does not fit the exist surroundings. Why is it that all of a sudden these buildings are added to the design at the end. I feel that this is being done in a way to force it through in a dishonest manner.

Dear VTA and City of San Jose Planning Department,
I oppose 300-foot-tall buildings at the 28th St/Little Portugal BART Station behind Five Wounds Portuguese National Church. The current plan o f record 120-foot-tall policy should not change in the new Five Wounds Urban Village Plan.

The Five Wounds Urban Village Plan was previously approved by the City Council on November 19, 2013 and amended on December 11, 2018, December 15, 2020, and December 13, 2022. The plan received input and buy-in from the local community with a building height limit of 120 feet (the church towers are 106 feet in height).

As a national church, Five Wounds Church is not your typical parish church. Since 1914, it has served Catholics of all backgrounds and e thnicities not just from East San José, the entire city of San José, Santa Clara County, and neighboring counties. It is one of the most p hotographed buildings in the city of San José, appearing in many campaigns. During official visits to California, Portuguese government o fficials, including Presidents and Prime Ministers have visited and consider it the epicenter of the Portuguese community in the San F rancisco Bay Area.
3 key concerns:

HEIGHT: 300-foot building towers will obscure the beauty of the historic Five Wounds Portuguese National Church; there is no 300-foot tower o utside of downtown San José
PARKING: No guarantee of parking for future residents, building occupants/employees, businesses or BART; VTA only guarantees 1,200 s

urface parking spots when the BART station opens (before the buildings go up), but each building developer will evaluate their parking as t hey see fit (each building could have limited to no parking); this will cause negative effects on Five Wounds Church, Cristo Rey High School, a nd IES Hall as parking will be at a premium in the neighborhood SAFETY of pedestrians, students, and parishioners due to restricted traffic, limited pick-up/drop off areas along Five Wounds Lane and 28th S treet; there are also concerns related to BART/public transit passengers walking through church and school property Sincerely,
Miguel Avila

Doubling the size of the allowable height is ridiculous. Taking away the sightline of the church would be bad, look at the beauty of the cathedral downtown negated by all the tall building around it. Stick to your original plan.

Dear VTA and City of San Jose Planning Department,
I respectfully oppose the proposal for 300-foot-tall buildings at the 28th St/Little Portugal BART Station, located directly behind Five Wounds Portuguese National Church. The existing 120-foot height policy in the Five Wounds Urban Village Plan should remain in place and not be changed.

Although I no longer live in San Jose, my Portuguese family has called this community home since 1887. The Five Wounds Church and s urrounding neighborhood are more than just landmarks—they are living symbols of our heritage, history, and cultural identity. Preserving the c haracter and integrity of this area is vitally important, not only for the Portuguese community but for the city as a whole.

I understand that growth and development are necessary, but progress should not come at the expense of erasing the cultural and historic f abric that makes San Jose unique. I urge you to seek solutions that balance modernization with preservation, allowing for thoughtful d evelopment that respects the heritage of this historic neighborhood.

Respectfully,
Star Silva

Star Silva

It is sad that we are living in a where things are not following through has planned. Sad to see where things can’t be transparent from the start versus being bamboozled later on. I believe that this proposal that the city wants to offer is clearly for the benefit of the city and not for the community. Where as if housing was the focal point. Why hasn’t vacant warehouses being converted vs creating a mess. I also believe this will create high traffic where it doesn’t benefit and creates more chaos has more people coming. Possibly more crime. More trash. Is there going to be enough funds to hire people to keep the area safe and clean. These things sound good but in the end does it really. I just wish the vta listen and be transparent.

Sincerely,
Tania Silveira

I was raised in Santa Clara and spent my weekends with my parents in Little Portugal.
