Re: Support for Agenda Item 8.5 — Lower Income Voucher and Equity Program Dear Mayor Mahan and Members of the San Jose City Council:

On behalf of the San Jose Downtown Association, I respectfully submit this letter encouraging your body to approve item 8.5 and staff recommendations to support the creation of nearly 200 affordable units in Downtown San Jose.

Supporting housing across the spectrum of affordability in Downtown San Jose is paramount to revitalizing our urban core. A vibrant, 18- to 24-hour downtown strengthens the local economy and supports small businesses that continue to struggle amid lasting changes to the daytime economy following the pandemic. In this case, the City's efforts will stabilize an underperforming asset limited by the absence of direct parking. Accommodating housing for public employees proximate to their places of employment can help on all fronts.

Strategic, forward-looking policies like item 8.5 accelerates affordable housing delivery and contributes to a more vibrant, resilient, and sustainable Downtown San Jose. San Jose Downtown Association strongly urges the City Council to approve Items 8.5. We look forward to continuing our partnership as this discussion evolves. Pease reach out to me at [email protected] or 408- 662-6898 with any questions.

Sincerelv.

Brian Kurtz
Chief Executive Officer
