RE: Agenda Item 8.1 - 2026 Major Events Status Report
Dear Mayor Mahan and Members of the City Council,
On behalf of the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce, thank you for your leadership and investment in SJ26 and the broader effort to position San Jose as a premier destination for sports, entertainment, culture, and community celebration.
The City's investment in the visitor experience has already proven successful. The early outcomes from Super Bowl LX and NCAA March Madness demonstrate what is possible when San Jose acts with coordination, creativity, and ambition. Increased hotel occupancy, restaurant activity, airport traffic, and downtown visitation all point to meaningful economic and community impact.
We especially want to recognize the coalition of partners assembled by City staff and leadership. The collaboration between the City, Team San Jose, the Sports Authority, downtown organizations, arts partners, venues, and the business community created strong alignment and execution. Team San Jose's leadership on communications and destination marketing, combined with fundraising and partnership efforts led by the City and Mayor's Office, helped build momentum around these global events.
We also appreciate the supplemental memorandum and the City's thoughtful approach to community outreach, preparedness, and coordination efforts surrounding the 2026 major events. Ensuring residents, workers, small businesses, and visitors feel informed, supported, and welcomed is an important part of creating successful and inclusive global events for San Jose.
For a first coordinated effort at this scale to be this successful says a great deal about the leadership and dedication of our city teams and partners. The Chamber looks forward to continuing our partnership with the City and community stakeholders to build on this momentum.
Sincerely,
Leah Toeniskoetter
