Please support sound, responsible, local planning efforts by accepting the recommendations from Councilmembers Casey and Candelas.
Land use and development are some of the most consequential decisions that are made within cities. Land use and development can provide incredible benefits but can also pose significant challenges when done without care. Top-down, one-size-fits-all mandates overlook local conditions , ignore community needs, and undo community-driven planning efforts. These mandates don't account for the health and safety of our community.
A constitutional amendment that places the power of land use decisions back with cities is in the best of interest of San Jose. Our community-driven plans should determine the course of our city, not state laws that disregard the uniqueness of our communities.
San Jose should do everything it can to restore, retain, and strengthen local land use control.
Sincerely,
Christian Wilder

Our state government ignores mandates from the federal government. Why should California cities follow mandates from the state?

PS. My wife and I moved to SJ approx 50 years ago ... We loved everything about SJ at the time.
However, things that are destroying that city are becoming increasing issues. Up zoning, over stressed infrastructure to try and support these multifamily units, etc. It's so distressing that my family is starting to give consideration to actually leaving the bay area and SJ in particular ... not a decision we take lightly.
It will be interesting to see how politicians support this in upcoming elections. Thank you for your time and I hope politicians are noting how much opposition is being voiced to all this.

I am writing to urge you to support the Casey-Cadelas memo to help restore and strengthen local control over housing and land use matters.
While it makes sense for the state to "steer the ship" and set statewide housing goals, municipalities should have the freedom and responsibility to implement them in ways that work best for them. The constant barrage of state laws is creating confusion, consuming precious staff bandwidth, and reducing trust in government.
Statewide, one-size-fits-all mandates overriding our General Plan must end. Please take a stand for local oversight on September 22.
Sincerely,
David Noel, District 9
