RE: Support for the City of San José Highway 237 Trail Rail Improvement Project Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers,
I am writing to you on behalf of the San José Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) in support of the City of San José’s application to Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s Safe Routes to Bay Trail & Transit program for the Highway 237 Trail Rail Improvement Project (Project).

The Project will design and construct critical at-grade crossing safety improvements along a key regional trail network. Currently, the Highway 237 Trail discontinues at the railroad tracks, exposing trail users to conflicts with trains and roadway vehicles. The Project will connect the trail across the railroad tracks and add railroad warning devices for trail users in both directions, reducing the risk of crashes between trail users and vehicles or trains.

The Highway 237 Trail is a key connection for Santa Clara County residents as it meets the northern terminus of the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail, a 5-mile north-south trail that crosses county. This connection provides Santa Clara County residents with direct access to the Bay Trail and other destinations along the Highway 237 Trail. Equally important, it allows users from other jurisdictions to connect to the San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail and access important destinations in the county. The Project will address a weak link in an otherwise robust regional trail network.

BPAC is an advisory body with the role of advising the Department of Transportation (DOT) on issues affecting active transportation in San José. BPAC provides recommendations on projects, policies, and priorities that affect walking and biking; acts as a liaison to the community; and promotes safety and community involvement.

Sincerely,
/s/
Jordan Moldow, Chairperson
