SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS.
At City Council direction, staff has prepared an ordinance increasing the compensation for Councilmembers from $1,323 to $1,900 per month. This will also result in an increase to the Mayor’s base compensation from $2,646 to $3,800. If approved the increase will take effect on January 1, 2025.
The City Council recommends that the City Council adopt an ordinance establishing compensation of councilmembers and an ordinance establishing compensation of the mayor.
Discussion and Analysis
At the November 20, 2023 City Council meeting, the City Council received a presentation comparing their compensation to the compensation of other local Cities. The current monthly salary for City Councilmembers is $1,323 and $2,646 for the Mayor. The last increase was 5% and it became operative on January 1, 2023. Following discussion, the Council directed staff to prepare an ordinance increasing the monthly salary from $1,323 to $1,900, with the change to become effective on January 1, 2025.
Table 1 illustrates the cost impact of the salary increase.
Fiscal Impacts
The Fiscal Year 2025, January through June 2025, budget increase for Councilmember compensation is $20,772 and $6,924 for the Mayor’s compensation. During the FY2023-2025 midcycle budget update Staff may request an allocation increase if additional budget appropriations are forecasted for the fiscal year.
