City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Commission
Park Naming Committee Naming Recommendations
June 19, 2024
The Parks and Recreation Commission selected a sub-committee to review community input into selecting a name for the planned community park at the Restaurant Row development. Sixty-three responses were received with multiple suggestions for the park name.
The sub-committee ruled out individual’s names per the city’s naming guidelines for parks. Then evaluated the responses for names which might reflect geographic or cultural aspects of the area.
The sub-committee presented their recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Commission on June 19th which voted to present the following four recommendations to Council for consideration.
Old California Park
Old California Row Park
Old Row Park
San Marcos Row Park
Based on the more than 50 park naming applications for this project, the sub-committee believes the following names will be a good representation of public opinion. Restaurant row has historically been part of the San Marcos community for many generations, and the presented names pay homage to the legacy of restaurant row while preserving the history of the site.
Encompassing the verbiage of the prior site allows the public to accept the changes and embrace the new repurposed site while honoring the history and fond memories that many generations have treasured. This is further enhanced by the developer’s mission to reclaim elements from the original structures.
The name is a very clear reference of the actual location of the site. Since many surrounding communities are also familiar with the location of Restaurant Row, this will help with any confusion.
Also based on the design plans by the developer, “Row” will also represent the aesthetic of the proposed plan.
