AGENDA – FEBRUARY 23, 2024 PAGE 3 of 3
NEW BUSINESS
1. GENERAL DISCUSSION BETWEEN THE LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND CITY COUNCIL. The Library Board of Trustees has identified the following priority topics of discussion with the City Council. Time permitting, the general discussion may include, but not be limited to the following:
1. Consideration of adjusting library evening hours.
a. The Library is currently open 62 hours a week, which is 10 hours above the average for the San Gabriel Valley. This is partly due to closing at 9 PM Monday through Thursday whereas most other neighboring libraries close at 8 PM. Of the (9) SGV libraries assessed, only two others are open until 9 PM.
b. Historically during the last operating hour (from 8 PM – 9 PM), the four to five staff members scheduled are rarely asked reference questions, nor do they assist patrons with managing their library accounts. The average number of patrons in the building during this last operating hour is 12, and they are predominantly utilizing the City’s free Wi-Fi service.
2. Consideration of expanding the City’s video security system exploration project to include the entirety of the Community Services Campus, including library facilities (Limited Inside/Outside).
a. A video surveillance system is intended to: promote the safety and security of the public, staff, and facilities; support enforcement of the Library’s rules of conduct; discourage inappropriate and illegal behavior; and aid in the apprehension and prosecution of offenders.
3. Consideration of developing a long-term maintenance plan for the library.
