Description of General Fund Costs
The City is responsible for irrigating approximately 60 acres of landscaping between Lacy Park and the center medians on Huntington Drive, Sierra Madre Boulevard, and Old Mill Road. The existing irrigation systems are several decades old, and therefore are outdated and require frequent, expensive repairs. The first step of upgrading the irrigation systems was completed in FY 23-24, and involved upgrades of the irrigation controllers at Lacy Park. The City has developed phased approach to the improvements over multiple years to avoid incurring significant costs in a single fiscal year. The next phase will be to complete upgrades of the outdated controllers on the Huntington Drive and Sierra Madre Boulevard center medians, which will cost approximately $75,000 based on quotes received. It should be noted that these upgrades are specifically for the irrigation controllers; any upgrades to the actual irrigation lines and pipes at Lacy Park or the medians will need to be completed in future years. Once complete, these irrigation improvements will help save staff time and money on repairs, and will also improve the efficiency of water usage in the City. Staff will explore potential rebates/funding opportunities that are available from the Metropolitan Water District or California American Water to help offset the overall costs.
