Description of General Fund Costs
The Department is requesting the purchase of a 2023 Chevy Tahoe for the patrol fleet. The current patrol vehicle used by the on-duty watch commander is a 2017 Ford Explorer. By June 2023, this vehicle will have approximately 75,000 miles on the odometer and approximately 11,627 idle engine hours. The industry standard (32 California Police Agencies Surveyed) for a police vehicle replacement is 90,000 miles or 3.5 years. This vehicle is currently at 83% of the recommended mileage, and is twice the recommended replacement period.
As with all patrol vehicles, this is a critical vehicle within our fleet and it is commonly used as a command post during operations in the field. The vehicle is expected to carry a considerable amount of equipment, including but not limited to, breaching tools, less-lethal projectile launcher (40mm), riot gear, personal protective equipment, maps, dry erase board, preliminary alcohol screening device, unmanned aerial vehicle, etc. The amount of equipment this vehicle carries is another reason for selecting the larger Chevy Tahoe.
The 2023 Chevy Tahoe requested for FY 2023-24 will need to be evaluated for potential replacement in FY 2027-28, in accordance with industry standards. The eventual replacement is listed under future requests. $ 75,000 $ 0

This is a fleet related Capital Improvement acquisition. After the initial purchase of $115,000, the ongoing maintenance costs will be paid through the Police Department Vehicle Repair & Maintenance account. The amount for repairs will vary based on the actual repair. There is currently no need to increase funding in the Vehicle Repair & Maintenance account. Roughly half of the total cost of this vehicle is associated with extensive electrical work related to the lights, siren, mobile digital computer, radios, power banks, as well as the cost for fabrication and installation of a heavy-duty storage system installed in the back passenger compartment and trunk area. This vehicle will need to be evaluated for future replacement in FY 2027-28 in accordance with industry standards.
