Tree is dead and trunk is dried out.
There is no readily visible indication as to why the tree died so young. While there is clearly irrigation for the grass, it could be that it did not receive enough water during the establishment period. Sprinkler irrigation only wets the top layer of soil and does not get down deep enough to develop a healthy root system.

Tree is growing in irrigated turf in City parkway. The parkway is 4ft wide, which is quite small for a sweetgum as these are known for large, extensive root systems.
The tree is in poor condition. It should be removed and replaced. Across the street are three Southern magnolia trees . I would recommend planting another magnolia as it will look cohesive and smaller growing cultivars are available to better fit the relatively small parkway.

The tree grew in City parkway. Lawn was removed in the past and replaced with other plants. Soil looks very hard and dry. White mineral deposits on trunk suggests that sprinklers had previously been present and water would hit the trunk. But currently it does not look like there is any irrigation. Appears that sidewalk panel replaced in the past.
This tree is dead. It should be removed and replaced with a more appropriate species.

center median
Tree is growing in large median with irrigated turf. During drought years, irrigation was turned off and at one point drip irrigation was installed to water just the trees. Aerial images from 2014-2024 show changes in irrigation and rainfall and corresponding loss of tree canopy.
Tree is in very poor condition and decay is advanced to the point that the tree is structurally compromised. Overall, sweetgum trees were negatively impacted by the drought years of 2011-2017 in this region. The stress during that time made them less able to fight off decay.
Recommended to remove and replace with more appropriate species.

Tree had been growing in a large city parkway. There is mulch over a wide area under the tree but weed barrier fabric is present under mulch. This fabric can inhibit healthy soil biota. Otherwise, conditions look favorable for tree growth.
The tree is completely dead. The speed and uniformity of the canopy drying out suggests bark beetles are the primary cause of the death of the tree.

Bark beetle holes visible on trunk.
This tree had been in poor condition two years ago. We had both oak trees behind SMCC treated for bark beetles as well as given a soil injection with liquid fertilizer to reinvigorate them. Of the two trees, this one was in far worse condition starting off. The tree showed signs of improvement and put out green growth in the months following the treatment. We were very hopeful at its recovery.
Then within six months the leaves rapidly turned brown and no new growth was put out.
The tree is now dead.

70 This tree previously had ivy growing at the base. When the property owners alerted me to the decline I asked them to remove the ivy, which can hold excessive moisture but also hide indicators of decay. Property owners did remove ivy but tree continued to decline. Sidewalk panel appears to have been replaced in the past.
The tree is dead and should be removed and replaced.

Tree is growing in parkway on the side of the home. The parkway size is relatively small for a tree of this species and likely does not provide adequate growing space.
This tree is almost completely dead. It will not recover. The extent of decay makes the tree a hazard.
Recommendation is to remove and replace with a more appropriate species.
