The specific purpose of the event is to raise money and awareness in memory of Marine 2nd Lt J.P.

Blecksmith (San Marino resident) through an annual 5K held on July 4. This year will be our 22nd year.

The event registration area / 'Finish' line is the NW corner of San Marino Avenue / Huntington Drive. The area is already closed to vehicles as it's the staging area for the 4th of July Parade held later in the day.

Our closest 'partner' within that complex of businesses is Debbie Priester (Titan Travel) as she lets us 'stage' supplies in the fenced area adjacent to her business. In addition, she provides power for our finish-line vendor (Race Wire) and the sound system we use for announcements / music.

The race starts at 8:00 a.m. on Monterey Road, just east of West Haven Road, towards Huntington Drive and follows a 5K (3.1 mile) course through San Marino (map attached). We have 13 directional signs (that double as 'Caution' signs) that we place along the course that help a) runners navigate the route and b) alert drivers that runners are on the course. We also have water stations at Mile 1 and Mile 2.

Each water station has 5-6 volunteers that distribute water cups to participants. Once the 'race' has passed their station, they turn to clean-up to ensure no trash is left behind. In addition, we 'sweep' the course at 10:00 a.m. for any remaining trash, etc. Once the runners arrive back at 1441 San Marino Avenue, each participant receives a finisher medal and we have a small awards ceremony recognizing the Top 3 Male and Top 3 Female finishers. At the conclusion of the awards ceremony (approximately 8:50 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.), the event formally concludes and the participants disperse. We have a group of approximately 25 volunteers who help set-up, manage and break-down the event. Once we have completed a break-down and swept the course (no later than 10:00 a.m.), we leave and there is no trace we were ever there!
Liability Insurance (COI) -- historically, we've worked with Victoria Marshall (SM Recreation Department) to secure the COI.

The SMPD and SMFD have been tremendous assets to our event, both in a public relations role and by pacing the runners through the course and providing traffic assistance at high traffic intersections.

Attached is a map showing the proposed location for SMPD traffic control; although, we defer to their expertise as to what's appropriate based on historic use and available support. January 6, 2026 Starting Line
