FROM: Alex Khojikian, City Manager
PREPARED BY: City Clerk's Office
MEETING DATE: January 16, 2024
SUBJECT:
Updated City Council Appointments List
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve the updated San Mateo Council Appointments list for 2024 that assigns Council Member Rich Hedges as external liaison to the America Supporting Americans board.
BACKGROUND:
At its January 2, 2024 City Council meeting the Council reviewed and approved the City Council Appointments List.
Subsequent to that approval, former Council Member Joe Goethals, who sits on the America Supporting Americans (“ASA”) board of directors, requested a Council liaison to that board. The Mayor approved the request and Council Member Rich Hedges expressed interest in the appointment, which was also approved by the Mayor. The list is being brought back to you for Council concurrence in the appointment.
ASA is a non-profit organization, led by Linda Patterson, that facilitates the adopt-a-unit program for the military. It was conceived as a program with the City of San Mateo’s adoption of A Company, 1st brigade, 327th regiment of the 101st Airborne (Air Assault) unit of the United States Army in 1968. The City has continuously supported our adopted unit throughout deployments as well as in stateside training and events for the past 55 years. It was the City’s adoption that really started the program. There are now six other cities in the County of San Mateo that have adopted units of the 101st.
They are: Atherton, Belmont, Burlingame, Foster City, Hillsborough, and Millbrae. As this is such an important relationship for the community of San Mateo, and a point of pride for the City, it was determined that it would be worthwhile to add this as an external liaison appointment.
BUDGET IMPACT:
There is no budget impact from this administrative action.
ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION:
This approval is not a project subject to CEQA, because it is an organizational or administrative activity that will not result in direct or indirect physical changes in the environment. (CEQA Guidelines Section 15378(b)(5).)
