Did you attend a meeting for this Board or
Commission?: Yes
QUALIFICATIONS
My qualifications for serving on this board/commission are as follows: Some of my qualifications for serving on the Park & Recreation Commission are as follows: - Graduate of the City Services Academy: I was enrolled and successfully graduated from City Services Academy in 2023, the most recent cohort. how the City of San Mateo is managed and operated. Through meeting city department heads in addition to case studies, site tours, class discussions, and hands-on experience I learned about the challenges the City is facing and investigated how creative management and budgetary solutions have been used to address these challenges. City staff discussed project challenges, and budget and resource limitations which was an eye-opening experience as much planning and intent needed to help stay within the allotted budget. - I'm a native San Matean who has utilized both our parks (citywide) and recreation throughout my 44 years here so I'm determined to ensure the quality and availability of these resources are sustained for current and future generations. - Dedicated City Volunteer: I was proactive in reaching out to Denise Garcia with the City of San Mateo to revitalize the Team Up to Clean Up Program which now serves as the monthly cleanup to keep our city beautiful and litter- free. I also received the Certificate of Special Volunteer Recognition, signed by then-Deputy Mayor Rick Bonilla, on October 18th 2021. - Communication Skills: Effective communication skills are part of my daily job as an enterprise account manager working with Fortune500 companies, which calls for the ability to listen attentively, express ideas clearly, and collaborate cross-departmentally with others. This skill is essential to engage with fellow commissioners, city officials, and community members. - Commitment and Availability: I'm committed to attending the required regular meetings, participating in any special events, and dedicating time to review proposals and make informed recommendations to City Council. - Understanding of Local Issues: I have deep familiarity with all our local parks, recreation facilities, and community needs. Therefore, identifying priorities, advocating for improvements, and ensuring that the commission's efforts align with the interests of residents is of the utmost importance to me. I participated in the Speak Up San Mateo! - Annual Park & Recreation Survey to provide my thoughts on how our parks & facilities can be improved for our community.
I want to serve on this board/commission because: I am eager to serve on the San Mateo Parks & Recreation Commission because I am deeply passionate about enhancing community well-being through access to green spaces and recreational activities. Growing up in San Mateo, I have cherished memories of our parks and recreational facilities, which have played a significant role in my personal development and quality of life. I walk my dog, Nori, to Joinville daily and frequent John Lee Dog Park so our local parks mean so much to me and my family. My son was also enrolled in Building Blocks at Lakeshore for pre-K and grew substantially while he was enrolled. Local recreation programs provide community members with a diverse range of benefits that contribute to their physical, mental, and social well-being. These programs offer opportunities for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to engage in healthy and active lifestyles through sports leagues, fitness classes, and outdoor activities. Our local recreation programs also promote social cohesion by fostering friendships, teamwork, and a sense of community belonging. I believe that by serving on the commission, I can contribute positively to the continued improvement and sustainability of these vital resources for current and future generations. I am committed to advocating for inclusive programming, maintaining environmental stewardship, and fostering community engagement to ensure that our parks and recreational amenities remain vibrant, accessible, and enriching for all residents.

I've worked passionately to grow the program, along with my colleague Linda Bauld, including actively posting on NextDoor to inform our community of how to get involved. While enrolled at Aragon High School, I received the Silver Sword Award (only 1 of 2 graduating seniors out of a class of 500 to receive it) which requires 200 hours of community, non-school related, volunteer work. A substantial amount of this time was spent volunteering in various capacities wherever/whenever possible throughout the City. Additionally, while enrolled in CSM, I enrolled and received an "A" grade in Biology 102 Environmental Science and Conservation, which covered topics such as ecological principles, biodiversity, climate change, sustainability, renewable and non-renewable energy, water resources, air and water pollution, and solid waste management. This course opened my eyes to some of the challenges we face as a society and I was determined to help make a REAL difference here locally.

QUALIFICATIONS
My qualifications for serving on this board/commission are as follows: I was previously a Parks & Recreation Commissioner from 2016 to 2018, when Sheila Canziano was Director of Parks & Rec. I greatly enjoyed the time I served the community in this role, and left for an opportunity to join the City's Planning Commission, which I served on from 2018 through 2021 including terms as Vice-Chair and Chair. Previous to this, I was a member of the San Mateo Leadership Program, Class of 2016.
I want to serve on this board/commission because: Having lived in San Mateo since 2002 and raised a family here, I am very appreciative and supportive of the community recreation offerings. I served as a Board Member of the San Mateo Youth Softball Association from 2013 through 2016, only leaving when I was blessed to be appointed to the Parks & Recreation Commission in 2016. During my time volunteering with SMYSA I build relationships with city staff, including Director Sheila Canzian, and learned about the challenges the department had balancing and managing the demand for fields and courts. While I moved over to the Planning Commission in 2018, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to return to serve the community through the Parks & Recreation Commission again.

Did you attend a meeting for this Board or
Commission?: Yes
QUALIFICATIONS
My qualifications for serving on this board/commission are as follows: I have volunteered with the San Mateo Arboretum Society (SMAS, https://sanmateoarboretum.org) for about five years. SMAS is located in Central Park and our mission is to both support the park and to promote horticulture education. Some of our programs and projects involve interaction with or cooperation from park employees and Parks and Rec. staff. I have a good working relationship with many of them and I understand some of their processes and constraints. While at SMAS I have served in a variety of roles including nursery work and garden maintenance, communications, educational programs for the public and local schools, tours of Central Park, participation in Central Park events (e.g., Summer Music Series, Winter Wonderland) and joint programs with the San Mateo Library. I spend a lot of time at the Arboretum which allows me to observe how people use and enjoy Central Park. The park serves a variety of communities and San Mateo is fortunate to have this asset. The Arboretum Society is also an asset. Our volunteers range in age from 13 to 97 and are from all over the world. We teach them gardening skills and give them a sense of community. I am especially proud that we were able to remain open and safely work during the pandemic. Many of our volunteers live alone so it was valuable for them to have some social interaction. I am currently president of SMAS which put me in a management role. I found this particularly challenging. We are an all-volunteer organization and people certainly have different (and strong) opinions, work styles and communication styles. I’ve learned that apologizing, listening, communicating, communicating again, etc. works well at resolving differences and keeping people happy. In addition to my SMAS work, I am also a consumer of Parks and Rec. services. For three years I have rented a plot in the Los Prados Community Garden. I also serve on the board there. This is in a large park in a part of San Mateo I would normally not visit. The gardening is great fun and I really value that the City supports these community gardens. It brings together people from all over the city.
I want to serve on this board/commission because: I am motivated to serve for two reasons. First there are projects at SMAS and the community garden that I would like to accomplish but I don’t know how to make them happen. I would like to better understand how the parks department operates, its organization, staff and processes for making decisions. My hope is this would make me more effective in my other roles. My second motivation is that I would like to learn more about the recreation side of Park and Rec. I am very impressed with the quarterly Activity Guide produced by Parks and Rec.
For a city the size of San Mateo, it offers a wide range of classes, activities and opportunities for residents young and old. I want to do what I can to help support this effort and build on it.
Please list any other background information (business, education, community involvement) which might be useful in considering your appointment and attach a resume: Resume is attached. My career was in computer science research, specifically data management systems. I serve on boards of two non-profits, one local (San Mateo Arboretum Society) and the other supports an annual international data systems research conference. My wife and I are active in a local long- distance hiking group that has exposed us to beautiful parks and opens spaces throughout the greater Bay Area.

QUALIFICATIONS
My qualifications for serving on this board/commission are as follows: Avid nature lover, athlete, dog park/public spaces advocate and conduit to multiple generational interests (as founder of Shaping Youth, an educational/media literacy site that spans youth interests, parent concerns and active senior bridging to have various age groups empower each other building collective knowledge)
I want to serve on this board/commission because: I've lived in San Mateo since post-collegiate years and it originally drew me with proximity to airport, the ocean, nature, nightlife/dancing/destination dining spots (Fishmarket, Customs House, Chevy's etc. on the water) where youth had some fun places to go, kayaking, SUPs, waterskiing, hiking trails etc. but am starting to see a dwindling of all of the above, reflected in a youth exodus as well. With 'pet parents' becoming a thing, pickleball interest expanding globally beyond a reputation as a 'seniors' sport etc. and parks/pubs and hubs becoming a central place for all ages to connect, I think it's imperative we prioritize multiuse, multipurpose recreation for residents of all ages that enhances lifestyle, access and equity for all. (Love the parklets, pop-up pilot ideas etc. happening in various cities to accommodate same)
Please list any other background information (business, education, community involvement) which might be useful in considering your appointment and attach a resume: Other background info: SMFC Substitute Teacher K-8, HOA VP board for 100+ Community of Homes, Social Activities Dir. for all our events/family fun gatherings here on Mariner's Island.
