Wildland Update for San Mateo Council Meeting

Current Fire Season
• Fire Season is has started
• Resources have been deployed to assist
with wildfires throughout California
• Usually, September and October are the
most problematic months for Wildfires
• Currently we have resources deployed to
the Shelly Fire in the Siskiyou County

What is
Defensible Space?
• Buffer zone between structures
and surrounding wildland areas
• Key to slowing or stopping fire
spread and protecting homes
from embers, flames, or heat
• Gives firefighters a safe area to
defend property
• This is key to keeping your family
and home safe from the
damaging effects caused by fires

Creating Defensible Space
What we are doing:
• Wildland home inspections
• Working with other
agencies to ensure open
space is managed
• Investigating citizen
concerns
What residents should do:
• Create and maintain
defensible space
• Remove dead or dying
vegetation
• Consider home hardening
