Subject: Agenda 26: Address to Monday Youth Commission Vote Date: Monday, August 19, 2024 6:04:41 PM
Greetings San Mateo Council,
As the voice of youth within San Mateo, we strongly urge councilmembers to vote in favor of expanding youth’s role within local government. Our city has made significant strides in promoting youth engagement through various initiatives, and we believe that extending youth representation to these new boards will further enhance this effort. By involving more young people in the decision-making process, we can ensure that the perspectives and needs of our youth are adequately reflected in city policies and projects. This will not only empower the next generation of leaders but also foster a more inclusive and dynamic governance process.

When young people are given the opportunity to participate in governance, they gain first-hand experience in how decisions are made, how policies are crafted, and how their voices can shape the future of their communities. This early exposure to civic responsibilities equips them with a deep understanding of government operations, encouraging them to become informed and active citizens as they grow older.

Additionally, involving youth in city boards and commissions helps bridge the gap between generations, fostering mutual understanding and respect. Young leaders bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a unique awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing their peers. Their involvement can lead to the development of policies that are more attuned to the needs of all age groups, ultimately creating a more resilient and forward-thinking community.

So for a greater San Mateo, please vote in favor.

Best,
