I think the proposed plan to use the (former) fire Station #25 on Barneson Avenue as a SMPD Traffic Unit Substation is a good idea. Location is ideal for traffic routes. Also should be beneficial for traffic "issues" close by on Alameda de las Pulgas.

Regarding the option of using the fire station in Barneson: I live at intersection of Alameda and 20th. ! think the rationale for this is logical. I would personally appreciate your presence here. I often hear revving engines with rapid starts and stops at the intersection. There is a lot of pedestrian traffic here, their safety concerns me. A couple of weeks ago 3 different vehicles with loud, but different engine sounds were making circuits for over an hour. Their circuits included the intersection here and i could hear them make a loop that seemed to go east, then bring them back here.
Regardless of the move decision, thank you for your service. appreciate the work the department does and the sacrifices you make.

Subject: Converting former fire station #25 on Barneson Ave to SMPD Traffic Unit Substation Thank you for dropping the brochure in my mailbox. My wife and I support your proposed use of this former Fire Station for a Traffic Unit Substation. If we were in a position to "condition" your use of this site, we would require that you direct a motorcycle officer to locate himself on Macarthur Avenue about fifty feet from the intersection of Woodlawn Drive sometime between the hours of 7 PM-11 PM at least once each month. Doing so, certainly would register with those drivers who turn the corner from Barneson onto Woodland Drive and then drive at an excessive speed until reaching the end of the block before breaking to enter Hillsborough.

PS: I led the neighborhood effort to install the two speed humps on Barneson between Alameda des las Pulgas and Yew. It's made a huge positive difference. We greatly appreciated the support of the Police Department in making this happen.

I think it's a great idea! My Mom lives at Portola/ Alameda, and a few times I have almost gotten hit by a car who went through the stop sign. Hopefully, you'll be able to hire more motorcycle police officers especially on 3rd and 4th Ave downtown. So many drivers when making a left or right to or from El Camino go through a red light. It's even scary being a pedestrian.
Thank you,

I support the concept of repurposing of old Station 25 located at the corner of Alamada De Las Plugas to be used as the Traffic Unit substation, with one concern. What is going to be done about parking for the officers and staff that will be using this location.
I live at and I am very concerned about the excessive speed on Alameda especially between Barneson and Aragon bivd.
Other than that I am very supportive of the concept of establishing the traffic unit substation at the location.
I would be willing to speak in support of this proposal, if desired.

Subject: New Substation on Barneson
Hi there,
I received a flyer soliciting community feedback on the potential reuse of the Barneson Fire Station as a SMPD substation.
I live on Vernon Terrace....which is quite close to the Barneson/Alameda-de-las-Pulgas intersection. / have two kids - ages 11 and 14.
While I can see some advantages to having a station there (mainly access to 92), I do not support having a higher police presence at that location.
Crime vs Traffic - While San Mateo is not like San Francisco, I still would prefer our limited police resources to prioritize "crimes" vs traffic issues. Would having officers stationed up here deflect from having officers downtown, or near Hillsdale Mall, or other higher-crime areas? On a casual walk through the downtown area or the Hillsdale mall area on a Friday evening and it is easy to spot things that need attention - public drunkenness, solicitation (i.e, asking/begging for money), even people scouting parked cars for possible break-in opportunities or catalytic converters. As my kids become more independent, it is most important to me that they feel safe in the broader community, I really wish we would prosecute and punish people who commit crimes (burglary, retait theft, vandalism, especially when those crimes are 2nd, 3rd, 4th offenses. If we want to focus on traffic, please please please focus on the high speeds on ECR (82) and the running of red lights on that road. I believe it's a state road, but the fast and furious types are going to cause a tragedy there...l've seen many near misses.
Nuisance traffic and tickets for this community - my family and | travel through the 4-way intersection at Barneson/Alameda intersection several times per day. There is a natural flow to this busy intersection that keeps it tolerable even during high traffic periods (i.e. during school drop-off hours and around 5pm- ish). My feeling is that the presence of a police cruiser at the intersection will cause people to slow-down and possibly stop completely at the intersection, causing unnecessary slow downs or back ups. In my experience, traffic stress causes confusion and causes good people to bend the rules (i.e. not waiting their turn at a 4-way stop). I'm worried about the effect a parked cruiser would have on the daily traffic and excessive ticketing for people in this neighborhood.
Sincere regards,
Brian Pevear

Hello,
I live near the former Fire Station #25 on Barneson. 1 have a few questions about the proposal for a new traffic hub.
• What is a Traffic Unit Substation?
• How many patrol cars would be stationed at the hub?
Does it operate 24/7?
My main concern is increased noise from police sirens and pedestrian safety in an already tricky intersection.
Thanks,

Hello,
I am writing in response to the flyer circulated asking for commentary.
I was wondering what was to become of that building. While we all feel safer having the police nearby, I live directly across the street from former Fire Station #25 so naturally I am concerned with what this move will entail.
For example, how will this affect parking and traffic? Will there be police cars and motorcycles parked along Barneson? Will there be foot traffic and visitors also parking on Barneson? I am sure you are aware, this is an extremely busy corner during commute times.
Please help me to understand how this will affect our neighborhood.
I wish you luck and hope that all works out for the best! Warm regards,

Subject: Comment: SMPD Traffic Hub on Barneson and Alameda To Whom it May Concern,
I live in San Mateo one block north of the Barneson and Alameda intersection. This is a very busy intersection during weekdays, especially during high traffic times. I am opposed to the conversion of the former fire station into a SMPD traffic hub because I believe it will cause worsening traffic at this intersection. Already the existence of a 4-way stop with 6 lanes causes a lot of traffic congestion and difficulty for pedestrians. This is also a residential neighborhood on an already busy street. The additional noise from a police hub is very worrisome.
Thank you for requesting public commentary prior to proceeding with this conversion. Given the proximity to a high school and middle school, I would propose that this building be converted for community use that targets young people and families.
Sincerely.

Subject: New SMPD Traffic Hub-Barneson Ave
Morning -
I've received a flyer yesterday soliciting comments regarding the proposed SMPD traffic hub on site of former fire station at Barneson Ave. As a resident of this community, I would like to share some immediate thoughts on this project.
First, it is difficult to form an opinion on the suitability of the proposed traffic hub without additional information as to the design, purpose and function of this new substation. Flyer included info on why site was ideal, but omitted important details on its potential impact to a mostly residential neighborhood. Issues such as noise and parking were not mentioned, nor was there any indication if existing building structure would be torn down, remodeled, or kept as is.
Having said that, I've lived in my residence for 7+ years and moved into this neighborhood due mostly to its family friendliness, including great schools, relative quietness, and charming homes. Without further insight into what a "traffic hub substation" entails, 1 am bothered by the potential impact it may have on an already busy intersection that is often filled with young students going to and from nearby Borel Middie, Aragon High and even possibly Baywood Elementary.
I imagine the activity level from a "traffic hub substation" would be much higher than that of a fire station, which makes this a questionable choice in terms of site selection. Although true that Alameda de las Pulgas is an important thoroughfare for the City of San Mateo, I wonder if El Camino Real may be better suited given it offers similar benefits (provides access north and south, and Hwy 92) while also located in a commercial corridor.
In fact, along Alameda de las Pulgas, the area north of Hwy 92 is made up of only residential homes, giving it a distinct neighborhood feel. This can be contrasted with the area south of Hwy 92, where a large commercial complex can be found. Although separated only by a highway, for someone who walks his dog on a daily basis to Borel Park, the uniqueness between these two neighborhoods is unmistakable.
At the risk of sounding like a NIMBY, I would like the City of San Mateo to reconsider the appropriateness of placing a police substation into the middle of a quiet residential neighborhood. understand the benefits of this locale which is one of the big reasons I chose to buy a home in this area to begin with, but feel there might be better alternate sites that offer similar benefits without putting the character of a neighborhood and its school children at risk.
Your consideration of the above is greatly appreciated and 1 look forward to hearing more updates on the proposed new traffic hub.
Warmest regards,
The Fong Family

Subject: PROPOSED SMPD TRAFFIC HUB
Hello Police Communication Team:
Today I received an insert on my door handle regarding the new San Mateo Police Department's Traffic Unit Substation. I realize the location of the former Fire Station #25 is "ideal" as mentioned; however, as a longtime homeowner since 1986 in the Aragon/Homestead neighborhood, i disagree.
This is a residential neighborhood and Fire Station #25 was a quiet station that always started their engine sirens after they left the area so as not to disturb the neighbors. Also, the firefighers parked their cars inside their gated parking area.
A Police Substation should be in a commercial part of the city. It will generate lots of additional traffic, parking, and noise for the residents here.
We currently have an enormous amount of congested daily Borel, Aragon and Baywood School traffic, jamming the Barneson/Hobart/Alameda del las Pulgas route and neighboring streets - with many parents commuting from Foster City and other locations to the neighborhood schools. It is dangerous and scary for the kids crossing the Alameda as well. Also, residents including myself must leave our homes early before 730am to try to navigate to 92 or to 280 to work and the same after 3pm.
These are my thoughts and concerns as a resident near the proposed Substation. Also, I appreciate our police officers, and one of my children, is a San Mateo Firefighter/Paramedic. Thank you.
Respectfully,
Breda Bahlert
