Subject: Public Comment for Agenda Item #23 – Transportation Program Dear Mayor and Councilmembers,

I’m writing as a resident of North Central San Mateo to thank you for your past efforts to support safer streets—and to urge you to take stronger, more urgent action to protect those who walk and bike in our city.

Agenda Item #23 tonight provides an opportunity to prioritize safety and rethink how our city allocates transportation resources.

In recent months, three pedestrians have been killed on our streets. As a parent, a neighbor, and someone who bikes regularly in San Mateo, I have to ask: what has been done in response? And more importantly—what will change?

Meanwhile, the City is preparing to spend up to $3 million to rip out the Humboldt Street bike lane—a functioning, life-saving piece of infrastructure—next to a high school. How can this possibly be the best use of public funds at a time of growing deficits, deferred maintenance, and deep need?

Instead of removing safety improvements, let’s focus on overdue, forward-looking projects like:

1. The Delaware Safe Routes to School project—
San Mateo’s first protected bike lane. Let’s build it
as designed.

2. The Hillsdale Pedestrian Bridge and 19th Ave/Fashion Island bike lanes, which have been promised for decades.

3. Implementing residential permit parking in North Central and opening unused public lots at night—simple, lower-cost ways to manage parking without sacrificing safety.

I also want to thank the City for opposing the 101/92 Direct Connector project, a wasteful proposal that would increase traffic and emissions. Please continue to stand up to this and advocate for smarter regional investments.

Please continue to move us forward—not backward—on transportation and equity. I urge you to fund and defend projects that make San Mateo safer, more livable, and future-ready.

Sincerely,
Mariana Tiwari
North Central Resident

Hi all,
As you consider Item 23 at the June 2nd meeting, 2025 Transportation Program Annual Review — Progress Update, the only way to make streets safer is through design. Aka, Engineering.

This video is a great summary: https://youtu.be/v6LIYQRglnM?si=JwLJBMH65FsFrVeI If you don't have 25 minutes, perhaps you can watch the last two: https://youtu.be/v6LIYQRglnM?si=112aaDR7ePQE5dZr&t=1411 Most of the arguments I hear about changing street designs come down to safety vs convenience. This safer design will slow folks down 15 seconds. Or a minute. Slowing folks down that much is worth it to achieve Vision Zero.

Thank you,
giuliano
