CITY OF SAN MATEO

APPROVING AN INCREASE IN WAGES FOR SPECIFIED CLASSIFICATIONS

IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CITY OF SAN MATEO MINIMUM WAGE ORDINANCE WHEREAS, the City of San Mateo’s Minimum Wage Ordinance, San Mateo Municipal Code Section

5.92.020(d) states that “beginning on January 1, 2020, and each January thereafter, the minimum wage shall increase by an amount equal to the prior year's increase, if any, in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for San Francisco- Oakland San Jose as determined by the United States Department of Labor” as specified; and WHEREAS, the ordinance specifies a maximum annual increase of up to 3.5% based on an August to August change in the CPI; and
WHEREAS, the difference in the CPI from August 2024 to August 2025 was 2.5%; and WHEREAS, there was a 1.0% increase due to the CPI carry over (City of San Mateo Municipal Code section 5.92.020(d)) from previous years, which brought the CPI increase to the allowed CPI maximum of 3.5% per the code; and
WHEREAS, because the minimum wage is currently $17.95 per hour, the minimum wage will be $18.60 per hour for the City of San Mateo effective January 1, 2026; and WHEREAS, the cost of this increase affects only a small number of per diem employees and is not expected to have a significant impact and any additional costs can be absorbed within existing departmental budgets.
