Project Description and Scope of Work:
The project scope includes funding for the Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) and Environmental phases. Design and environmental review for Class IV bikeway from Edison Street to El Camino Real, ADA ramp installation, new crosswalk and pedestrian push buttons, and signalization modification at El Camino Real intersection, including design for video detection for bicyclists and vehicles. Scope includes coordination and permitting with Caltrans for intersection improvements.
Bicycle and pedestrian facilities are proposed for either side of the El Camino Real intersection; the lack of linkage across the intersection renders them less attractive for users. With no clear direction and facilities, users are left to determine safe crossing options on their own across a busy six-lane roadway.
This project will define the connection across El Camino Real, providing a link between the east and west sides of the intersection that is safe for bicyclists and pedestrians of all ages and abilities. This increases the share of active transportation users who can access transit and key amenities on both sides of the intersection. By designing (and later implementing) proposed features including a Class IV separated bike lane, pedestrian crosswalk, a new accessible curb ramp, and video detection, staff intends to eliminate a stressful gap in the City’s active transportation network and provide accessibility for users to feel comfortable walking and biking.
