Agenda Number: 7 Section Name: CONSENT CALENDAR Account Number: 10-2311 File ID: 25-10766 TO: City Council
FROM: Alex Khojikian, City Manager
PREPARED BY: Human Resources Department
MEETING DATE: January 12, 2026
SUBJECT:

Updates to Principal and Senior Transportation Planner Job Specs and Senior Planner Salary Schedule — Approval RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution to approve the updated Senior Transportation Planner “Senior” and Principal Transportation Planner “Principal” job specification series and the salary range for the new classification of Senior Transportation Planner.

BACKGROUND:

Currently, there is a significant gap between the Associate Transportation Planner and the Principal classifications. The Public Works Department is seeking to create a Senior Transportation Planner classification as part of the management series to close this gap. The Senior classification will be flexibly staffed to the Principal classification through a competitive process. Making these changes will increase flexibility and employee development/potential, create internal promotional opportunities for current City employees, and/or attract new talent. The Human Resources Department recommends setting the monthly salary range for the Senior Transportation Planner at $10,448.33 – 12,453.76 (10% above the Associate Transportation Planner). These changes are being proposed to: 1) update the duties, distinguishing features, and qualifications, and 2) add the Senior Transportation Planner to the Transportation Planner series to create a flexibility staffed classification.

BUDGET IMPACT:

There is no fiscal impact as there is sufficient funding within the current budget to support these classifications.

ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION:

This job specification update is not a project subject to CEQA, because it is a government fiscal activity which does not involve any commitment to any specific project which may result in a potentially significant physical impact on the environment. (CEQA Guidelines Section 15378(b)(4).)
