SUBJECT:

LGBTQIA+ Progress Pride Flag Display at City Hall – Adoption RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution to direct that the LGBTQIA+ Progress Pride Flag be flown in recognition of Pride Month Pursuant to the City's Flag Policy beginning June 2, 2026, and continuing through June 30, 2026.

BACKGROUND:

On June 3, 2014, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution establishing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) Commission, the first county or city-level commission in California dedicated to addressing the needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. The Commission’s mission is to cultivate San Mateo County as a welcoming, affirming, and safe environment where its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and gender expansive community members can thrive. In 2020, the Commission launched its Pride Month Visibility Campaign, encouraging all cities and communities in San Mateo County to recognize and support Pride Month each June. Since 2021, all 20 cities within the county, including the City of San Mateo, have participated by issuing proclamations and raising the Pride Flag. To continue the City’s commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion, staff recommends that the City Council adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the display of the LGBTQIA+ Progress Pride Flag during the month of June, in accordance with the City Hall Flag Display Policy.

BUDGET IMPACT:

There is no budgetary impact associated with the adoption of the attached Resolution.

ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION:

This proposed resolution is not a project subject to CEQA, because it is an organizational or administrative activity that will not result in direct or indirect physical changes in the environment. (CEQA Guidelines Section 15378(b)(5).)
