DEFINITIONS
Under close supervision for the Civilian Investigator I, under general supervision for the Civilian Investigator II and the Civilian Investigator III, perform investigative work in support of police operations, including background investigations, administrative investigations, follow-up investigations, case development, and coordination with sworn personnel and prosecutors; and perform other duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a three-level professional investigative series:

1.Civilian Investigator I – This is the entry level in the Civilian Investigator series that allows the employee to develop journey-level knowledge and skills. This classification is distinguished from the Civilian Investigator II by the performance of routine and structured investigative work in support of police operations, including background investigations, administrative investigations, and basic case support under close supervision. Employees are expected to demonstrate proficiency and may advance to the Civilian Investigator II classification.

2.Civilian Investigator II – This is the journey level in the Civilian Investigator series.

Employees within this classification are distinguished from Civilian Investigator I by the performance of standard investigative work, including independent background investigations, follow-up investigations, case development, and coordination with sworn personnel and prosecutors while exercising independent judgment. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Civilian Investigator I, or, when filled from the outside, require prior investigative work experience.

3.Civilian Investigator III – This is the advanced journey level class in the Civilian Investigator series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other classes within the series by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Individuals in the Civilian Investigator III classification perform advanced and lead-level investigative work, including complex, sensitive, or high-profile investigations (e.g., cold cases, internal investigations, officer-involved incidents support), and may serve as a program lead or a subject matter expert, and provide program oversight.

The Civilian Investigator III is a flexibly staffed classification, and positions are generally filled by advancement from the journey level class of Civilian Investigator II through a competitive process, or, when filled from the outside, require prior and advance investigative work experience.
